We are in the near future – say, half a dozen Presidencies ahead – and the current President (of the USA, of course) is James Halliday, who is the best thing that has happened since, at least, Abe Lincoln.
But now, just about the worst thing happens. While Halliday is addressing a rally in Boston, a body is found in a nearby alley – of a man who's the President's double: not just closely resembling him but identical in every way – same blood group, same fingerprints, same everything.
The discovery is hushed up; but who can be certain now that it's not the man in the White House who is the impostor? His press secretary, Meric, begins to investigate, and the answer he gradually assembles – not without danger to himself – is a very startling one. And it doesn't involve the CIA, or the Russians, or Men from Space, or any of the familiar explanations.
Ben Bova has come up with a highly original thriller, and we are delighted to welcome him to our list.
