ABANDONED. pre 2000 fantasy fiction book with a title somthing like "the shepherds daughter"

I'm looking for a book I read in the 90's. It was a fantasy about a girl that runs away from her shepherd father to join the army. I'm pretty sure the title was the shepherds daughter but can't find any mention of it. This book was part of a trilogy and had a lot of violence, sword fighting and magic in it.
