SOLVED. FICTION - MYSTERY- About a WW2 anthropologist [s]

The mystery was set in the desert, I'm pretty sure it was New Mexico, the protagonist was an expert in WW2 aircraft. It was something about a missing plane that went down in the desert, I think it was secret government stuff. I think it was a series and I always wanted to read the other books.

I'm pretty sure it was from 2000s. The book cover was orange and I think there was a scorpion on it.
