Nurse Nightmare | 59 comments The Ruins by Scott B. Smith ... tried and tried with this one but just couldn't get into it... was too slow and boring so I ended up watching the movie instead HA!

Going way back in time, I'm sure there were books I didn't finish but I'm not sure what they were. I've never felt under any obligation to finish a book just because I've started reading it. Too many books to read to waste much time on something I'm not enjoying.
Of recent books I've read, or attempted to read, The Time Traveler's Wife would be the first. I don't think I got more than 25 pages into it and had to give up.

Annerlee | 271 comments My first major non-read was Buddenbrooks: The Decline of a Family which was required reading for a German literature module at uni. It was the size of a brick and, after the first few chapters, I knew I wasn't going to see it through. I didn't care enough.

I changed the module, but gave up on the course soon after. I still shudder at the thought of picking it up again. A nightmare... but not in a good way.

Becko | 41 comments Little Women (Little Women, #1) by Louisa May Alcott , never got past chapter 1. Used to take it out to read when I couldn't sleep, worked like a charm.

Anne (w/ an E) (mzcatnthehat) | 825 comments I am sure there were some when I was younger but the first one I remember from recently is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I just couldn't get through all the detailed descriptions of EVERYTHING and EVERYONE,that didn't seem to have anything to do with the story. I gave up about halfway through, and people have told me that is when it started to get interesting.

Although I've abandoned others, they're so long ago I can't recall them. However, one that sticks out is Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk. I know he went out of his way to be offensive with the book, but the stories in it weren't just offensive, they were utterly idiotic and just a waste of time trying to read them.

message 107: by Sean (new)

Sean (doccrab) | 70 comments It's been a while, so long that I can't really remember the last time I had to put a book down. But I jyst couldn't stomach it any more and I had to put the book Brenda down. As much as I tried it was just too far fetched and not even remotely believable.

Joey B. | 12 comments The first book, couldn't say, but the LAST book I abandoned was The Teratologist by Edward Lee. Just a vile piece of story telling...download the sample. I read through the part about a hospital orderly who goes down on a mental patient that he rapes nightly, and who he hasn't bathed in more than a month. That was pretty much it for me right there.

Harsh Kumar (harshkumar) | 187 comments Well I can relate.
I don't like abandoning books either.
I haven't read alot of books yet. But I can say that once I start reading any book, I try to finish it , no matter how tedious the reading can become due to the dullness of the story.
It is as if I am ready to drown with the ship as the captain.

But unfortunately the house by the churchyard by Joseph Sheridan le fanu was the first book I abandoned recently. I like Carmilla, the vampire story written by the same author but this one particular book brought me no joy, only boredom.

The second book I abandoned was Ghost Story by Peter Straub. But I would never throw any book away.

No Sir
We all here are bibliophiles
We love books. The story might not be as happening as we expected it to be, but that doesn't mean we will throw the books away.

I personally think now that it is not a sin nor anything unfair done to the author or the story if I abandon a book. Because it is just not meant for me to read.

There might be some other interesting books waiting for you out there. Rather than wasting time, reading a book with a story which you think is crap, it is better to move on to the next and maybe keep the other book for somebody else to read. You never know who might pick it up and like it more than you did.

But I am sure that sooner or later I will give a second chance to the books I have abandoned.
That is the best part
You can always return to it when you think you have nothing else to read or maybe when you think you have enough time to spare to try and read the abandoned book again.
You might even return to it influenced by others, because the other reviewers deem it a good read.

Sean (doccrab) | 70 comments I concur with Ghost Story. That was last year's abandonment. Gave it a second chance at the beginning of this year and only made it half as far as I had the first chance I gave it.

message 111: by John (new)

John A Clockwork Orange

Later, I also couldn't sit through the movie either. Considering I gave Kafka's garbage a second (undeserved) chance, maybe I should revisit this novel ... but then again there is too much great, good and even mediocre literature to read out there yet to read.

Bring on the hate lol.

Marcus (mmatoc) | 5 comments Life of Pi. But then I picked it up again years later and today it's one of my favorites.

Can't say I blame you on this one. I really had to push myself to get through A Clockwork Orange, and even though I wanted to like it, I can't say I really enjoyed it all that much.

Kay Twilight. Nope.

LOVED this one. And the film, too.

Peter | 110 comments The resort by Sol Stein. I didn't like setting, subject, style and characters. Thankfully it was only the reading example.

message 118: by Joshua (new)

Joshua Dodd (jdizzle619) | 38 comments Dan Simmons-Summer of Night.

Blah..... found this soooooo much of a mix of other, excellent, coming of age stories. Once Dwanye had his issue in the field I gave up. I finally finished it a few months later but was not impressed at all. It seemed like he was mashing everything together and to me it felt forced and mediocre at best. That's my opinion though, it came highly recommended so it was a bit of a shock.

Its weird though cause his period pieces rocked imo. (Terror, Abominable, ect.)

Jeff (ashlarut) | 1 comments Infinite Jest. After about two chapters, I realized I just wasn’t enjoying the experience and that there are way too many other books to get to.

Dreams_of_Electric_sheep (dreamsofelectricsheep) The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium, #1) by Stieg Larsson
A super struggle for me. Gave up very early on. Went on to watch the film(Swedish ver.) a couple of years later and it was much more enjoyable

Sarah-Grace (Azrael865) (sarah-grace) | 185 comments Moby Dick

Eventually I may go back to it, I was 12 when I tried to read it the first time. I got only to the second chapter.

David HK | 24 comments Beautiful Disaster I was trying to expand my horizons by dabbling in the Romance Genre so after reading all of the rave reviews I figured that I would check this one out. I had to abandon it a little more than half way through because I couldn't take any more of the convoluted story line and that very inconsistent honor student, MMA fighter, dead end kid, bully cretin of that main character who is always using the name "Pidge". But far as a romance novels go, I thought the "Fault within our Stars" was awesome!

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3047 comments One of the first books on Goodreads that I marked to read that I abandoned was From the Dust Returned by Ray Bradbury. Dull and confusing

message 126: by Chelly (new)

Chelly (carnalbutterfly) | 25 comments I gave up on Ghost Story by Peter Straub. I'm a bit ashamed to confess I didn't even get past page 53 before I just couldn't continue. I don't think I've ever abandoned a book before that.

message 127: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (paper_addict) | 812 comments In 7th grade my friend told me what a great book The Hobbit was. So I went to the library and checked it out. I read the first chapter and returned it to the library. That was about 40 - 41 yrs ago and I haven’t had any desire to pick it back up.
