I'm looking for one more book for my A to Z blog reviews (yeah, good thing I read fast!). My theme is wilderness, and I need a kids book with a title or author starting with T, or about something that could be forced to match T, for, yes, my post on the 23, i.e. T day.

Any thoughts? Pioneer stories are good, as are contemporary things that feature kids in the woods, even if they are on some other planet or some other dimension. I'm flexible, though I'd like to avoid 500-page tomes, given the time constraint :)

Thanks!

The Borrowers Afield The Borrowers Afield or The Borrowers Afloat The Borrowers Afloat?

Using "The" as the word that starts with T is pretty weak, I admit. :)

M.G. King (mgking) | 727 comments If you're willing to consider titles with "The", there's a lot of possibilities!

The Call of the Wild

The Long Winter

The Incredible Journey

But it does seem a bit like cheating. What about Treasure Island? Does an island count as wilderness?

I thought of The Long Winter too! But it pretty much takes place indoors. :) But maybe it qualifies under "nature" in that nature caused the hardships! I guess it does have the wandering home from school in the blizzard scene.

I could go with any of those, if I want to really punt. But I pulled The Cay of the shelf yesterday, by Theodore Taylor, which should be plenty of Ts! And if I recall correctly, it would count pretty well for wilderness (sure an Island is wilderness, if it's not inhabited, or only inhabited by people who are trying to kill you).

I meant to ask you if you'd ever read Tschiffely's Ride. It's the story about a guy who rides two ponies (whose names I used to know) from South America to New York.

Oh, my, that sounds good! I'll take a look to see if it's available! Is it for kids?

I certainly read it in my early teens if not earlier.

Actually - I remember - I read it because Pat Smythe mentioned it in her kids pony books "The Three Jays". She was a famous British showjumper when I was very small - MG age!

Jane | 12 comments I took a look at my Goodreads MG list and came up with the following (most of which require stretching the term "wilderness," I'm afraid):

The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle (wilderness at sea?)
Thirteenth Child by Patricia Wrede (fantasy where the family lives at the edge of a magical wilderness)
Theodosia and the Last Pharaoh by R.L. LaFevers (Theodosia takes off for the wilds of Egypt in several books in this series)
Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt (Winnie's adventures with the Tucks take place in the woods near Treegap)

Those are some great titles!

Great suggestions, all! Now I just have to pick one and get it read. Along with I think 3 other books I've chosen to review this month but haven't yet read. Or was it 5? I am so insane.

Somewhat insane, yes. I have four books to review this month, of which I've finished two and am about halfway through the third. I don't count my bookclub book, which I had to read for Monday, but don't have to review till I can find space for it :)

Philip Martin | 29 comments Time of the Eagle. It's a wilderness survival tale set in the 1700s. Two native kids have to travel alone through the woods after a smallpox outbreak.

It might be cheating, but my book: The Boy Who Ran, sort of starts with a T and it's definitely wilderness related, being set in 4000 BC, North America.

I hate to be so blatantly self promoting, but you did ask.

Thanks everyone! I ended up with The Cay, by Theodore Taylor, largely because it fit and the book was on the shelf at the library!
