Yeah, I didn't need that either, Anastasia. That, and child abuse (I've been told), are no-no's in cozies and I agree. Particularly touching for me as I've four geriatric cats and I live day to day hoping something like this won't happen here. Reading on but not happily. :-(

Mini spoiler ahead -

Awk. And now it's the mom. Pressing on.

Allison | 905 comments Bawled. Absolutely bawled at that point. Had to put book down for a little bit. 2 small aging dogs here at home and definitely not ready to think about that...

Unusual to have something like that in a cozy but does it make you think the characters are more real? Does it help you identify with them more?

Strangely, had no issues with the 1st death at all. Hmmm, what's that say about me?

Anastasia (anastasiaruff) | 241 comments I guess we can all relate to losing a pet. The black dog in my profile picture, Schnitzel, passed just over a year ago. Everyone was heartbroken. His ashes are in a rock in the garden overlooking the fishpond where he used to cool off in summer. He would spend hours watching the fish and occassionally catch one.

LOL Same here, Allison. If the cowboy gets it, no problem. But don't dare do anything to his/her horse!

It might make character more real yet it doesn't advance this plot further. If it did have direct bearing on plot that'd be different. I think the mom issue is enough. Not both. A bit much for a mystery fan to digest. IMHO

Aww, so sorry, Anastasia. Our hearts are loaded with those paw prints they tell us about. Animals are the best.

Allison | 905 comments You are right, Tina. It didn't seem to advance the plot at all. Wonder why she even put it in there? Mom at least is doing some sleuthing on her own so she is adding to the plot.

Exactly, Allison. Besides that, it made the reader feel unnecessary sadness.

In the home stretch on this one. Thanksgiving and Black Friday/Cyber Monday is setting me off a bit. Luckily Dec. discussion hasn't started yet. Least I don't think it has. LOL Afraid to look.

Done! Won't spoil even though we're in final stretch. Never saw it coming. Never thought this person to be the perp.

Ending sad all over again. Glad this book is done. I'm not sure I'll read anymore in this particular series though I might try her other books.

What say you, PI's? Interested in your opines.

message 13: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia (anastasiaruff) | 241 comments I'm done also. Did not pick him either, although should have known when the dog did not like him. Even though it was sad in parts I still enjoyed it. I think it would have been better read from the beginning of the series as would have been more familiar with the characters. Have the second one sitting in The Pile and also the first in the granny apples series. Hoping to get to them soon

I love Granny Apples! She is a spit fire! I do hope you enjoy it I did and I'm going to continue on in the series.

Granny Apples sounds interesting. That's the one I want to try.

As for characters, who's your fave? Who did you loathe most ('sides the killer)? Anyone stand out?

I kinda liked O's mom. Maybe she could teach me a few tech moves. lol Tom was probably my love to hate character.

At time of intro, I wondered about the two sons and if the "good boy" would somehow turn out bad.

Thanks for participating in this side read and discuss, PI's. And there's no rush in wrapping discussion. It'll be up for more thoughts or impressions should we like.

Anastasia (anastasiaruff) | 241 comments Odelia and Greg seem like a perfect couple. He seems to be a lot more sensible and reliable and holds her back a bit with her impulses.

Yes, they do seem a well fit couple, Anastasia and Greg manages to get things done in spite of his challenges.

message 18: by Jill (new)

Jill Tool | 992 comments I think they are the perfect fit for each other. They complete the other, and they have a love and fondness for each other that many people are always looking for in their own lives. I think they are one of the most likable couple that we've read. That's just my opinion.
