ity of Southern California filmmaking school, he created his first Sci-Fi film, Electronic Labyrinth THX 1138 4EB. The film failed miserably, and the critics did not realize the philosophical depth. After this, he was challenged to create a comedy by a friend. This was the real start of his career. The next film was called American Graffiti. This showed in Lucas's own words, "a warm, secure, uninvolved life." After this successful project, the idea George had while shooting American Graffiti, evolved into a full-length feature, Star Wars. In the 1977 release, Star Wars awed with special effects, fantastic landscapes, and captivating characters. Made for $11 million, the film grossed over $513 million worldwide during its original release. Lucas continued the story of the Jedi and the Dark Side in The Empire Strike Back (1980) and The Return of the Jedi (1983). In the meantime, he set up a state-of-the-art special effects company, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), as well as a sound studio, Skywalker Sound, and began to execute more control over the finished product of his films. Today, Lucas’ net worth is $4.9 billion. He is 69, and recently sold his Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012. He and new wife Mellody Hobson recently welcomed their first daughter, and despite rumors, Lucas will not consult on the new "Star Wars" films. Many people think that is just too bad. George is a wonderful guy, and he introduced us to a whole new world. In space, and in movie making. The films of the early 1970’s were gritty, and downbeat. They were a reflection of America’s social and political upheaval! Instead of heroes, they featured anti-heroes who broke all the rules. After some of the film companies shut down, they turned to new young directors in film schools to uplift the young film watchers category. George was one of those young directors, and this was when his career hit it big. His first twenty minute film, which was supposed to be five minutes he showed his teachers that kids could think out of the box, and move beyond the restrictions. After graduating from USC, Lucas joined his friend, Francis Ford Coppola, with his independent film company. The film THX 1138 made the Warner Bros demand the $300,000 that they had invested, back. After this, Lucas started his own company, Lucasfilm Limited. For his first project, he chose American Graffiti. Produced by Universal Studios, it was loosely based on his own experiences as a car enthusiast growing up. The film was shot in 28 days, and cost under $1,000,000. It was co-produced by Gary Kurtz. Ned Tenon from Universal was upset at Kurtz & Lucas’ decision of doing an early showing, even though they got a decent response. American Graffiti was a good movie, but Lucas had his eye on a whole different genre.
All this time Lucas was talking about doing a Flash Gordon kind of 1930's space opera. When asked why he chose that he responded that he wanted a fun experience to make a film for young people so he could leave an impression on them. This was to become Star Wars. The most successful science fiction film at this time was 2001, and it made $24 million. The average income for sci-fi films was $16,000,000, or even lower, under $10
