Riel Hallmanchong | 3 comments I read this book at least 5 years ago. It is about a young man who decides not to follow his parents path and go to university. Instead he starts a home building buisness. As I recall, he was described as being well spoken and articulate despite his lack of formal education. He favored Georgian(?) architecture and builds a rural home for himself. I think the book took place somewhere in the New England states.

I realize that this is a very obscure sounding book, but if anyone else has read it, I would love to know the name so I can recommend it to a friend.

Riel, is your book fiction or non-fiction?

What's it mostly about? Is there a lot of drama? (e.g., struggling to start a business, family tensions, architecture/technical, humorous, romance)

Btw, this isn't your book, but your request reminded me of House by Tracy Kidder. I haven't read this book yet, but I've enjoyed Kidder's writing.

Riel Hallmanchong | 3 comments Hi Kris, unfortunately, that's all I can remember... I don't even remember if it was fiction or non fiction. I just remember it being a well written and engaging story (likely centred around family tensions). I am pretty sure I first heard about it on CBC radio.

Anyway, thank you for telling me about the book House... looks like it could be good! Must give it a try!

That's funny. It really does pay to guess sometimes. I'm going to put that on my TBR list as well! :)

Btw, here's another title that turned up: A Place of My Own: The Education of an Amateur Builder by Michael Pollan.
