I liked it despite some flaws. Planning to read the book soon.Currently reading A Betrayal in Winter.
I'm just about halfway through Reapers Gale, it's funny whenever I read Malazan it totally takes over my life.
This thread is actually for non-grimdark but now I am thinking we should have a special thread for that :))
I'm reading a thriller, The Boys from Brazil, which is very unusual for me. Very exciting read so far.
I believe I have a fairly varied taste:Military history, ordinary history, adventure/action, thrillers, spy stuff, sci-fi, mythology, other types of fantasy - but unless they're character-driver, I usually find them boring.
Igor
Igor, what kind of military history do you enjoy? any particular period or historical figure?I am currently reading The Devourers by Indra Das. I think my next grimdark would only be read in May :(
Silvana, I like mostly post-wwi stuff, with focus on wwii onwards. I've read quite a few very interesting books lately:-The Battle of the Tanks: Kursk, 1943
-Six Days: How the 1967 War Shaped the Middle East
-Exocet Falklands: The Untold Story of Special Forces Operations
-Operation Thunderbolt: Flight 139 and the Raid on Entebbe Airport, the Most Audacious Hostage Rescue Mission in History
-Black Hawk Down
-Bravo Two Zero
-Code Warriors: NSA's Code Breakers and the Secret Intelligence War Against the Soviet Union
-Hunting Hitler's Nukes
I'm now reading on the Russian Air Force, SAS Nazi Hunters, and Libya (from ancient times to the recent war and the toppling of Qaddafi).
Take a look at my 2017/8 reading challenge, if you like, or my shelves for the reviews on all these, if you're interested.

A bit difficult to look at your shelves as they are based on authors not subjects. Anyway, I used to specialize my warfare reads on WWII - having read Stephen Ambrose's books, which opened the floodgate for me. Lately my military history taste has been more diversified...
Any recommended book for naval warfare? Ancient/modern/contemporary is okay.
Hi Silvana,Stephen Budiansky has a couple:

The Falklands War I mentioned in the previous post is also a very good one.

I'm currently listening to Obsidio, the series is the best YA I've seen in a while! Also reading Lips Touch: Three Times, I've heard good things about this author.
Just finished Bridgers by Stan C Smith. 'twas a good read. Now on to Vega: Orc Slayer by James Patrick.
Reading "Ian Fleming's Commandos." Well, the dude was mental, to say the least. James Bond isn't that much fiction - except the punny names and bad 60s gadgets.Igor

I just read my first Fleming book last month. I enjoyed it more than I expected! His writing was actually pretty good. But you have to endure the inherent sexism of course.
Oops, keep forgetting about that. I am listening to to The Key to Creation by Kevin J. Anderson though...

More grimpunk 😉
Grimpunk? LOLI wish Empire of Ashes is good. Ryan's Queen of Fire was not satisfactory as a trilogy final book so I hope this one is not another dud.

It’s not a dud so far.

I read Blood Song and really enjoyed it. I looked at the reviews for Tower Lord and Queen of Fire and saw a lot of bad reviews. So the reviews were true?
I think Tower Lord is good, with some flaws. The Queen of Fire not so much. Actually I recommend everyone to read Blood Song and then stop. The novel is really good on its own. Well since I have one book left I will still read Empire when I get a better price for the ebook.

I enjoyed all 3 books in the series, but I can understand why a lot of readers hated the way it was ended by the author.

I also read all three and enjoyed all of them. The second had multiple POVs , and the third was multiple battle strategies from our main characters. I love reading fantasy battles, but I could be in the minority. Just my opinion, but those differences from book one, could of led to the poor reviews.
Interesting. You are all making a strong case in favor of me giving the rest of the series a go. I see Queen of Fire second hand all the time. I suppose it won’t hurt to give them a chance.

Reading another diversity read: The Salt Roads by Nalo Hopkinson.I like magical realism, need to read more of those :)
Okay, now I'm reading By Ways Unseen by Daniel DydekDefinitely not grimdark. Not in this world, not int the next...

Probably doesn't quite match the high grimdark standards, but reading and enjoying Oracle's War by David Hair
