I like Joshi when he is writing about authors he likes & explaining why. But, when he talks about authors he dislikes & tries to remain objective I find he frequently becomes inconsistent & hectoring. Frequently in 'The Modern Weird Tale', for example, he seems to criticise authors he dislikes for tropes or stylistic choices equally present in those authors he does like...
“Despise” would probably be too strong a word to describe my personal reaction to Joshi’s criticism. I do, however, find his dismissive responses in the case of authors whose work he dislikes as sometimes far too cavalier.
