James Everington | 55 comments I like Joshi when he is writing about authors he likes & explaining why. But, when he talks about authors he dislikes & tries to remain objective I find he frequently becomes inconsistent & hectoring. Frequently in 'The Modern Weird Tale', for example, he seems to criticise authors he dislikes for tropes or stylistic choices equally present in those authors he does like...

I like his analysis but despise his criticism.

“Despise” would probably be too strong a word to describe my personal reaction to Joshi’s criticism. I do, however, find his dismissive responses in the case of authors whose work he dislikes as sometimes far too cavalier.
