Ali Here we can talk about how the dialogue in Mockingjay effects the book and how the reader thinks of them. The two aspects of this is what they say and how they say it (their tone). Btw don't come to this discussion is you don't want spoilers.

Ali Just letting everyone know, this discussion will be on the book.

Elizabeth I think that Suzanne Collins does a great job making all the characters different using their tone and mood, which is shown through the dialogue.

What characters do you think have the best dialogue?

message 4: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali I think that Katniss is sometimes unlikable because of her tone. She is is sarcastic a lot and gets angry easily. On the other hand, Katniss can be likable because what she says is normally what she really means. I like how she always says the truth.

message 5: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Sewards I have never read this book but how would you describe the characters based on their dialogue?

message 6: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali Let's continue talking about Katniss first. Then we can move on to other characters.

Elizabeth I also think that what the characters say influences how we think of the characters.

For example, we think of Katniss as bold and brave because of what she says in the book.

I know this is from the first book, but when Katniss volunteers to go instead of her sister, what she says ("i volunteer as tribute") allows us to see that she is really caring.

Elizabeth Throughout the whole series, I think Katniss's dialogue really comes through to the reader most, out of all the characters.

message 9: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali As I said before, the two parts of dialogue is what the character says and how they say it. From the dialogue we can figure out what the character is like and how likable they are to readers.

message 10: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali I totally agree with you Liz

Elizabeth Yeah. I think that for Katniss, BOTH apply - she says honest stuff, but her tone can get annoyed or mean (as you said, sarcastic).

Christa Farris I like how Katniss just states the truth as it is and doesn't try to cover it up because she has a tough personality which affects the way she narrates

Ali Yeah I agree with you Christa. She says what she feels, but also this can be a bad thing. Sometimes when she talks like that, it comes out meanly. For example, she said some really mean things to Gale in this book because of her truthfulness.

Christa Farris Yeah. She just says things how they are, which can sometimes hurt the feelings of other characters

message 15: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali I feel like Katniss didn't always do this to her good friends in the other books. She always did this to her mother but I feel her character changed in the last book, but she never went through a change. The author just all of a sudden started the book with Katniss having different traits I think.

Christa Farris Almost all of the things she says to or about people in dialogue or thought are true, but sometimes hurtful

message 17: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali Does anyone agree?

Christa Farris I agree

message 19: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali So would you say Katniss' dialogue makes her seem unlikable. In this book I found her a little unlikable, but I loved her in the other books.

Elizabeth I agree, too. I think she is one of those people who just are honest, and nothing else. She gives everyone - even Gale, who is her friend! - the truth, and nothing but the truth.

But even though she may have hurt Gale through her words/tone a little... Gale and Katniss forever!!!

message 21: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali I found her very hurtful to people in this book.

Elizabeth She may be a little unlikable, but still, in general throughout the books, I think we can still agree that deep down, she is a caring person. Similarly to how Darry seems harsh, but for real he cares about his brothers.

Elizabeth And yeah, she was especially hurtful in Mockingjay specifically

message 24: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali That's very true!

Christa Farris I agree with Ali

message 26: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali Now who should we talk about now?

message 27: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali Either Gale, Prim, or Peeta

message 28: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali I think that readers find out how rebellious Gale is from dialogue.

message 29: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali And also it shows how he can sometimes be mean.

Christa Farris Yeah. I think his dialogue is REALLY similar to Katniss

message 31: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali I just think that you could see how rebellious Gale really was. He would risk anything to be freed from the Capitol.

Christa Farris Yeah. That made him very blunt and stubborn like Katniss, but he doesn't think about innocent lives being lost in the war, while after the games Katniss does. The games changed her, and if she wasn't in them, she would be exactly like Gale.

message 33: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali Omg that's so true. The games changed Katniss and made her think about how innocent people shouldn't die for the enjoyment of other people. This made Katniss more rebellious, but also made her think more about people losing their lives.

message 34: by Kyle (new)

Kyle Chang While Katniss was involved in the rebellion, she did not win the hunger games with the intent to start it.

message 35: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali We can also talk about internal and external conflict here.

message 36: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali Obviously an external conflict is that the Capitol and the districts are practically having a war.

Christa Farris I agree with Kyle

message 38: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali I think and internal conflict was when she was deciding whether the capitol kids should have a Hunger Games.

Christa Farris Yes

message 40: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali Is there an others?

message 41: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali I think another one was whether to trust Peeta anymore, since he was hyjacked

message 42: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali I think that there are more internal conflicts than external conflicts. Another internal conflict was who she should choose: Peeta or Gale.

Christa Farris Yeah

message 44: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali I think that Katniss has the most conflicts in the book because she can never decide on anything. I'm not sure which character has the most conflicts, because some of Katniss' problems are very small. What does everybody think?

Christa Farris I agree. Katniss has many conflicts. Some are small, but some are also really big.

message 46: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali Some other characters in the book have less small conflicts, but bigger conflicts. I'm having trouble figuring out who has the biggest conflicts.

Christa Farris Yeah. I think Katniss actually has a few of the biggest conflicts and so does Peeta.

message 48: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali I think that we learn through Peeta's dialogue that he is very nice, but his actions don't always show how nice he is.

message 49: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali In Mockingjay I don't think readers got to see how nice Peeta is at all.

Christa Farris Which actions?
