SOLVED. Book Starts in Present with U.S. Man Missing, Grown Daughter Goes Back to HIs Childhood (India?) and Hears Story of Her Father as Blind Orphan and His Best Friend Girl Who Has No Legs [s]

I read this book only six months ago or so and now can't find it on my Kindle, which is where I thought I read it, but perhaps it was a paperback.

The book starts out with a family -- a woman and her grown daughter -- missing the husband/father. The daughter discovers, eventually, that her father wrote, in his earlier years, to a woman in his homeland (which I think was India). The daughter goes to his hometown in that country and meets someone who knew her father and tells the story of his childhood to her.

The man tells the girl that her father had been blind when he was young (he was not when he was her father), and that he had been best friends and eventually in love with a girl his age who was either crippled or had no legs. The two of them were inseparable.

Eventually, he was called to live with a wealthy uncle in a city and groomed to take over whatever business he was in. Then he emigrated to the U.S. and started a new family. There's more to that part, but I don't want to spoil it!
