Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11208 comments 30.1 – Schatzie’s Task: Tis the season for giving back
Giving is one of best things about the holiday season.

This is a two book task. Pick two different options and read a book for each.
Required: State the options you chose when posting and supply any additional requirements asked for in the individual options.

Option 1: Read a book about animal rescue. The book can be about one animal being rescued or a group of animals. The rescue must be clear from the description of the book on GR. Here is a list of possibilities: Popular Animal Rescue Books.

Option 2: Read a book with a word in the title that means “give.” This word must be a verb and used as a verb in the title (give, gives, giving, gave). Subtitles will not count. Some synonym possibilities are bequeath, donate, bestow, grant, share, etc. The word must be found in the title of the book, not in a subtitle. Required: Identify your word when posting.

Option 3: Read a book with an author whose initials can be found in the word HEART. Middle initials may be ignored.

Option 4: My gift to you....read a book of your choice.

kiki (keekers) | 815 comments regarding option 2 for this task, i just googled "synonyms for give" and went to the thesaurus.com page....can i use any of the words that appear on that page as a synonym, or do you have a specific list that you would like us to use? thanks for your help! :)

message 6: by Donna (new)

Donna | 1271 comments you can use any synonym as long as it means 'give'.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4452 comments Is this okay for Option 1 - The Dog Who Saved Me by Susan Wilson

You have to expand the GR description to find:
Until he finds himself trying to rescue a wounded and gun-shy yellow Lab gone feral...

message 9: by Andrea (new)

Andrea would this book qualify for option 2?
The Given Day by Dennis Lehane

That works.

I love Dennis Lehane, but sadly, this book won't work. The word 'given' is used as an adjective in this title and it needs to be a verb. Sorry Andrea.

Do Unto Animals: A Friendly Guide to How Animals Live, and How We Can Make Their Lives Better"

Hi BriKie,
This book won't work. I read the GR description of your book and I didn't get a sense that it was about rescue. It was more on how to get along with animals. Sorry about that.

message 14: by Ms.soule (last edited Nov 18, 2015 07:37AM) (new)

Ms.soule (mrssoule) Will All I Want work for the animal rescue option? It's on the Popular Animal Rescue Books first page and the hero is a park ranger who is tracking down poachers. There may be more animal rescuing (there usually is in this series) but that's the only animal-related plot line I'm seeing in the reviews.

Hi there,
The rescue must be clear from the description of the book on GR. I read the blip and it doesn't mention 'rescue'. Sorry.

Daphne (daphnesm) | 486 comments Checking on for Option 1: The Birds of Pandemonium

From the description: Pandemonium, the home and bird sanctuary that Raffin shares with some of the world’s most remarkable birds, is a conservation organization dedicated to saving and breeding birds at the edge of extinction, with the goal of eventually releasing them into the wild.

Examples of rescue: There’s Sweetie, a tiny quail with an outsize personality; the inspiring Oscar, a disabled Lady Gouldian finch who can’t fly but finds a brilliant way to climb to the highest perches of his aviary to roost. The ecstatic reunion of a disabled Victoria crowned pigeon, Wing, and her brother, Coffee, is as wondrous as the silent kinship that develops between Amadeus, a one-legged turaco, and an autistic young visitor.

Andy Plonka (plonkaac) | 4207 comments I am hoping that this book works for animal rescue Last Dog on the Hill The Extraordinary Life of Lou by Steve Duno . The first paragraph of the description is "Born of guard dogs on a secret marijuana farm in Mendicino County, Lou truly was one dog in a million. On the winter day that the ailing, tick-infested feral pup was rescued by Steve Duno, neither dog nor man had a clue as to what they were getting into, or where the relationship would lead."

For option #3, do the letters need to be in any kind of order? I'm interested in reading The Scribe by Elizabeth Hunter

Thanks!

Donna | 1271 comments Sara2,

Any order is fine. Your book works.

Jennifer W | 466 comments Option 1 is going to be bad for my TBR!

I was thinking of going with this one if it works:

Shadow Mountain: A Memoir of Wolves, a Woman, and the Wild

After forming an intense bond with Natasha, a wolf cub she raised as part of her undergraduate research, Renée Askins was inspired to found the Wolf Fund. As head of this grassroots organization, she made it her goal to restore wolves to Yellowstone National Park, where they had been eradicated by man over seventy years before.

Hi Jennifer, I'm sorry but your book won't work. The wolves aren't being rescued. It looks like a great read though. I've added it to my list.

Donna | 1271 comments Jillian wrote: "Hi, for option 3, would the author Rhonda Riley work? Thanks!"

Hi Jillian,

There is only one "R" in word heart, so that author doesn't work.

Alicia, I will accept that. I need to reword my task though so that I make that clear in the description. Happy reading.

Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11208 comments Nicola wrote: "Does The Historical Atlas of New York City: A Visual Celebration of Nearly 400 Years of New York City's History work for option 3? Just checking as an Illustrator is mentioned as well."

Only the author would count for an author-related task, not an illustrator.

This is addressed in this part of the rules: Only authors that are identified as authors (or a default blank in the author role field), co-authors, or contributors may be used for tasks involving author information. Other roles or functions such as editor, illustrator, artist, translator, introduction, designed by, foreward, preface, assistant or afterword may not be used for author-sourced tasks.

**Answering for Schatzie because this is more Rules of the Challenge related and because she's swamped.... ;-)
