SOLVED. Black cover and another dimension? [s]

I am trying to remember the name of a book. I think the story of a man/boy who goes to another dimension? Genre is horror fantasy i believe. The book part of a trilogy or series. The book cover i remember is black with a skull/head facing left with little tentacle things coming out of it. Help much appreciated.

Could it be the Vamphyri series by Brian Lumley? The first book doesn't much, but later there's a lot of dimension shifting. Also a lot of skulls on the covers.
