About ten years after most people I have finally decided to tackle the Lord of The Rings trilogy...or maybe that is a bit much of a commitment, I should say that I've decided to read the first book in the trilogy. We'll see what happens from there.

I've read the Hobbit of course, and I remember loving it to bits but I won't lie to you; I'm finding this book to be a bit of a slow starter. Now, don't get me wrong- it is fantastically written and Tolkien paints the scenery so well it almost tops the movie (visually anyway). But having to slog through two chapters learning every single thing about the hobbits, and the food they like, and who is related to who, and blah blah blah... I don't even care that much about my own family lineage.

To be fair, I started reading this alongside Gone With the Wind, and if you read my last rambling post about the book you will see that I fell hard and fast, and LOTR couldn't compete. Even though GWTW was over 1000 pages and The Fellowship is just shy of 400 it was over far too fast. Whereas right now I feel like I'm back in 10th grade English, forced to sit patiently while the class works chapter by chapter through a book I finished a week ago.

There have been some bright spots. In spite of disliking Frodo (not his fault, I just grew to hate him in the movie and the dislike has carried over), I'm liking Strider. He appeals to the want-a-bad-boy in all ladies and I'm glad he's along for the ride. I love Tom Bombadill and his catchy tunes sung to his river wife...lady. And there are so many characters from the movie that I'm itching to see in their original setting.

I'll try to remember to post some more thoughts, I'm only on chapter 11, so I'm sure I'm being hasty. But frankly my dear, I don't give a damn.

Whoops, wrong book :-p
