Anna | 505 comments I saw this book on goodreads a few months ago and thought the plot was interesting but I haven't added it to my 'to read' list. Now I can recall only that small part of blurb that said that heroine was supposed to save her male friend from something. It was hinted that if she fails he would die/face some other horrible consequences but he wasn't afraid due to his inability to feel fear. I am quite convinced that it was the second volume of some series.

Amber Hynes (arhynes) | 5 comments The synopsis that you give vaguely reminds me of His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman. The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. The main character is Lyra and she travels between parallel universes. It's been a while since I have read them, so I can't quite remember if the companion, Will, feels no fear, but that sounds about right, or something similar.

Mir | 802 comments Do you recall anything more, like the cover, if it was new, was it set in the contemporary world or a made-up one...?

Anna | 505 comments I think the setting alternated between 'normal' world and some kind of dangerous fantasy land. It's possible that the young man that heroine was supposed to save was stranded in that 'other' land. So there is similarity to Phillip Pullmans The Subtle Knife but I'm sure it's not what I am searching for. I've read His Dark Materials trilogy as a kid and the book I am after I know only from a blurb. I also think the heroine was older than Lyra, maybe about 17.

Valerie (valeriekemp) | 274 comments Probably not what you're looking for, but a couple books where a character can't feel fear:
Reboot
Fearless

Reboot has a similar basic plot line to what you're describing in your first post.

Then Splintered fits more of your second description, but not really the fear bit.

Anna | 505 comments I am positive that it was the male friend who was unable to feel fear so it wasn't Reboot or Fearless. I think Splintered has most similar setting of the three books you've mentioned, but I've already given it a try and it wasn't what I was looking for.

Anna | 505 comments I found it! The book was called Fearless by Tracey Ward. It looks like I've mixed up parts of first and second book of this series.
