I watched It Follows for the first time last night. I've heard mostly excellent reviews for it and it over all seems to be highly praised. I really enjoyed it for the most part and thought a lot of it was done very well. I thought they created a great atmosphere and the 'it' that's following them was very simple but effective. However, there were a few things about it I didn't particularly enjoy. So it was kind of a mixed bag for me and, while I think it's one of the better recent horror movies, I didn't feel like it quite lived up to my expectations. I was just wondering what other people's views of this film were. Did you enjoy it as much as the hype? Or were you a bit let down by it?

That movie was great! The camera work was beautiful. I love horror books but I am usually not a huge horror movie fan as my imagination tends to run wild when its dark and I have to walk down the dreaded hallway to the bathroom....something scary is always awaiting me. Lol. But my husband convinced me to see this one and, although it definitely creeped me out later....it really made an impression and stuck with me the way I feel a horror movie should. People walking down the street towards me have never been the same after that! ha

I think it makes a strong lasting impression and the people walking definitely freaked me out.
"It Follows" is the best horror movie I've seen in ages. Loved every minute of it, and I've seen it three times...so far.
I saw it in the theater and didn't regret spending the money. I thought it was super creepy and I loved the retro feel.
oh, just watched this tonight, its was area good. I loved the retro look, there wasn't much of an explanation about "It" but the people following were so damn creepy. I liked the ending, it was kinda vague which I liked. Best one I've watched in a long time.
After thinking about the movie some more and after a second viewing, I actually really like this movie. I think after my first viewing I was a little bit disappointed just because after all the hype nothing would've met the expectations I had. This is one reason I usually try to avoid certain things until the hype has died down, or I try and avoid the hype altogether, because it tends to ruin things for me in that sense. However, I definitely agree with everyone else here, best horror movie I've seen in ages. Really good!
I really liked it. It didn't have the usual stereotypes and took its time to develop the characters. And the fact that it could be anyone just walking in your direction was a nice touch. The scene where they are sitting in the backyard by the soccer field and one of the players slowly walked in their direction was one of my favorites. Creepy as hell and highly recommended.
I heard about it via a horror podcast I listen to (Don't Read the Latin, in case anyone is interested), and finally watched it a couple of nights ago. I loved the soundtrack, thought it was very well crafted and shot with a really sinister atmosphere - but not one to add to my collection. But now I can't stop thinking about it. I might have to get it after all.
I thought it was a pleasant change from the spate of found footage/possession films. It had a eerie feel to it and a looming sense of dread. The idea is clever and the terminator-like demon is chilling. A much smaller film than the likes of Ouija, the paranormal activities and I bet much less successful. Yet a much more effective horror film.
Ohhh I loved this. I keep turning it over and over in my mind. The music, the 360 shots, the simple but disturbing setup, the 70s/80s feel - all were wonderful. In the commentary they mention that the Its that follow Jay look like her friends, family, and other people you can recognize from earlier in the movie. I'm trying to figure out who they all are.
For example, at the beach the It looks like one of her friends - which I didn't catch at all and honestly probably wouldn't have if the commentary didn't mention it. Also, I think the man at the end pool scene is possibly Jay's father. That song in the soundtrack is titled "Father."
Did anyone else recognize anyone?
Also, were there any Its that weren't creepy to you? I thought the boy at the beach house was kind of a generic spooky faced ghost. Not very effective. The average looks of the others is what made them so disturbing to me.Do you think It is actually a ghost or something else since they were able to physically harm it?
I thought the themes of death following you and being inescapable for all of us and also the inherent risks of sex ( STDs, pregnancy, etc) were fascinating in his setting. I was also a bit amused that the boys in the film were not afraid to die for some sex. Or maybe they were really that devoted to Jay?
Anna (Bananas!) wrote: "Also, were there any Its that weren't creepy to you? I thought the boy at the beach house was kind of a generic spooky faced ghost. Not very effective. But you couldn't really see their faces very well, so it might not have been.
As for the boys...I think Greg didn't believe in It actually being real, and liked Jay enough to want to assuage her fears and get some sex. Paul was clearly in love with Jay (or at least it seemed clear to me), and I think he wanted to save her.
I suspect It might be something tangible rather than a ghost, but I have no idea what. Maybe some sort of tulpa-like rapist's curse gone horribly out of control. Maybe a kind of incubus that feeds off sexual energy and is somehow bound to follow a particular chain of intercourse.
I thought it was one of the best movies of 2015. There were a lot of directions to go with the premise, but the minimalist take on the subject was just great. It took all the possibilities and rolled them into one, allowing the viewer to slowly discern them all for him or herself. I'm still thinking about this movie today (and not just because I'm writing this).
Does anybody think that person far in the background of the closing scene when Jay and Paul were walking down the sidewalk was a "follower" coming to get them?

I didn't know it was supposed to be people we'd already seen or that she already knew, in that sense. That's really interesting, next time I watch it I'll now know to be on the lookout for them. I did think that the last guy was her Dad, though, anyway because it seemed like she recognised him.
Anna (Bananas!) wrote: "I thought the themes of death following you and being inescapable for all of us and also the inherent risks of sex ( STDs, pregnancy, etc) were fascinating in his setting. I was also a bit amused..."
I found that strange. They were willing to possibly bring it upon themselves just to have sex. It was pretty evident that Paul really liked Jay anyway and had for a long time but then Greg just wanted to get laid. I initially wasn't sure on this movie because I find the whole 'if you have sex, you will be punished' horror movie trope to be very tired, and old, and just plain stupid most of the time as sex is not seen as the bad immoral thing it used to be seen as, but the way this movie handled it was very fresh and original and it was really creepy so I enjoyed it immensely and thought it was very good.
Kylie wrote: "Anna (Bananas!) wrote: "Also, were there any Its that weren't creepy to you? I thought the boy at the beach house was kind of a generic spooky faced ghost. Not very effective. The average looks of ..."Ohhh, I hadn't thought about it being one of the peeping tom boys.
I like the idea that it's some kind of incubus/succubus. It makes a lot of sense actually. I'll have to looks up tulpas but that sounds interesting too. Really though I do like that they left it unexplained.

And yes, about the follower at the end.
Regarding Greg and Paul, if I were in that situation there's no way I'd be playing hero! Of course it's creepy for us because we see the creature. Jay's friends haven't seen it but her reaction to it alone would terrify me.

That was my first thought, and the ambiguity of that was one of my favorite things in the whole movie.
This was one of my two favorite horror flicks I saw last year, the other being Oculus, for different reasons.

You're sharper than me. I wasn't even thinking in that direction. I figured if it looked like anyone it would be people the audience clearly knew. I'll be scoping out the production design next watch, trying to spy family photographs.
Maybe they should have made it more obvious? I do like the subtlety though... But just the idea of your parent coming after you like that is chilling. I guess they did go there with Greg though.
Which reminds me of one other thing I wish they'd done differently. I think it would have been even more disturbing if you saw Greg dying, saw how it affected him or drained his life, instead of him already being dead when Jay caught up to them.

Don't let the low rating fool you. The acting is very good, story is good, had a similar creepy feel to it, and leaves some things unanswered. Low rating due to lack of sex, explosions, dismemberment, car chases, etc.

I've seen Oculus but got distracted and missed some things so I need to re watch it.
Thanks for the recommendations. I want to see Babadook too. It seemed to have similar underground hype to It Follows.
It Follows and Spring are my two favorite movies of the past 10 years...or more. They give me hope for horror cinema.
The Babadook is a eerie film, like It Follows. Both have a sense of impending dread which many recent horror films don't have. I also enjoyed watching Late Phases: Night of the Wolf, last year, one of the better werewolf films.

Midway through 2016 and it's not a good year for horror movies so far. I've seen Hush, Conjuring 2, The House on Pine Street, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Witch, Green Room. Of those, I might have to say The House on Pine Street is my favorite so far, although I said above I wouldn't recommend it. I am looking forward to seeing Don't Breathe, Lights Out, Fare, and The Invitation. There's also an Australian movie Chocolate Strawberry Vanilla from a few years ago available in the US this year that I plan to see. Anybody seen anything they like this year?
Bill wrote: "Just watched The Invitation and would say it's the best I've seen in 2016 so far."I agree that the Invitation was pretty good. I have seen all you mentioned save Pine St. and Green Room all are luke warm. Wish I had some to recommend but the last few years has been very weak for horror mvies.

I watched the trailer for Lights Out, and although I like Theresa Palmer, since seeing her, all of her, in Restraint (2008), I'm not sure that's a movie I'll like. Don't Breathe, however, looks like it'll be just my thing, and I think I'll go see it tomorrow since it's in town. Also, Don't Breathe was filmed in part in Detroit, and I like seeing desolate urban landscapes like that such as appeared in It Follows and Only Lovers Left Alive, also filmed in Detroit.

Lights Out looks good, but from the trailers I've seen of it I have a feeling they've done my pet peeve: they show the scariest parts of the movie during the trailers, so when you see it in the actual movie you don't even jump. I hate it when they ruin it like that. I should just quit watching the trailers;-).
Finally saw Spring. It was certainly odd. She was a unique creature. I just thought it was too long and especially took too much time getting to the central relationship. There was a lot they didn't need to include at all.I just finished Green Room also. It wasn't as extreme as I was expecting.
As this is a thread for 'It Follows' specifically, could we be a little bit more careful with spoilers for other movies, please.
I think "It Follows" is one of the most inventive and creepy movies to come out in a long time. It does have originality and a good cast. I knew it would be good right out of the gate, though I waited for blu ray to watch it.There are a number of great short 2min to 12 min features out there that are so creepy and original that It would almost seem that It Follows might have been one of them. "Lights Out" is one of those short 2 mins films that got a full blown Hollywood feature.
While I haven't seen that film, do yourself a favor and YouTube "Lights out" for the special short. And in the side bar there are several other very creepy shorts featuring the same girl in all of them. She should probably be in the movies herself.
Check them all out.
