I would like to nominate a modern classic which is also historical fiction and a romance.Atonement by Ian McEwan.
" By the end of that day, the lives of all three will have changed for ever: Robbie and Cecilia will have crossed an unimagined boundary, and Briony will have committed a crime for which she will spend the rest of her life trying to atone." Comments I have read about this book - "masterpiece", "hauntingly beautiful", "poignant", "tragic".
I'll nominate March by Geraldine Brooks. It is historical fiction and winner of the 2006 Booker Award. It takes place during the Civil War and has Mr. March, fictional character in Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, going off to war during trying times. I’ve had it on my to read for awhile. Maybe this is the good time?
What about Stoner by John Williams? It has been recently "rediscovered" here in Italy and someone gave it to me as a birthday gift some months ago, but I haven't had the chance to read it yet. I'm very intrigued by all the hype we've had here, though.
Closing the nominations since there isn't anymore.
