I really love the format too! Its so different, but it really sucked me in. There's not a lot of superfluous info, you are reading the bare bones of the plot, the stuff you need to know. I really like that!

I figured that's what it was, I was just a bit confused by how they explained it I guess lol. Thanks Jenny!

I finished!!!! I think this is one of my favorites for 2015! I agree with everything, Jenny! And yea, you were right about (view spoiler)

Harlee | 1583 comments @Karen Yeah, my copy doesn't have a name listed there. It's blank. But that's really cool to hear they were giving other authors shout outs haha

Harlee | 1583 comments I've kind of hit the wall with this book. I'm liking it but it's been SO hard for me to keep picking it up, ya know? I'm going to make myself devote some free time to it and hopefully be done by this weekend :)

I definitely did not have that problem Harlee! I'm sorry you are though.

message 62: by Harlee (new)

Harlee | 1583 comments I'm making more progress now, stopping on page 386 for the night. Because of the format it's pretty easy to fly through pages and get sucked in!

message 63: by Harlee (new)

Harlee | 1583 comments I finally finished! I'll admit I had some trouble getting into and staying into it, but I flew through the last 40 or so percent of the book. IT WAS SO INTENSE!!!

Yay Harlee!! Intense is a great description!!

message 67: by Sherrie (new)

Sherrie | 1212 comments I'm on page 211 and the action is really getting cranked up. The epistolary novel format is perfect for this science fiction thriller. I'm enjoying this book and can see why it's getting such great reviews.

I'm finally jumping into this discussion! I'm at 65%! This book is interesting in A LOT of ways. DEfinitely an awesome plot and I agree with everyone who said the format is perfect for the book, although I'm always a sucker for books that are written in unique and creative formats.

Harlee, I was sort of like you that the beginning was harder to get into in terms of having a desire to pick up the book, but I always found myself turning the pages and wanting to read on because of the short and quick format. However, from around 40% and on I've been unable to put it down because of how intense it is. CRAZY. Like completely off-the-rails crazy.

All the AIDAN parts were freaky, especially when he kept saying "AM I NOT MERCIFUL" LOL.

I'm not as big a fan of the blacked out cursing as a lot of it seems sort of forced and unnecessary, particularly when it's written. The radio logs are more realistic, but all the cursing in the IM messages during really frantic exchanges seems unrealistic, no one would have TIME to add in unnecessary swear words when they're just trying to survive. Just my opinion. Also, I still don't get why some people go crazy for romance that includes lines like "I effing love you". I know it's really popular in romance right now, but I just don't get it. I'd much rather here something sweeter like "I love you (add in poetic literary comparison)" But maybe that's just me.

Anyway, overall it's a page turner and I can't wait to find out how it all finishes!

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 12932 comments Mod
I see your point on the blacked out cursing. I just thought it was funny. Some of those situations, it was capturing video or audio, and it makes perfect sense then. If I were in some of those situation the characters were in, I admit, I'd be dropping F bombs like nobody's business! I don't swear a lot, but when I'm REALLY pissed off, or things are going really badly, I turn into a potty mouth! I get it from my mom. I grew up listening to hear swear whenever she was mad. And she swears like a sailor! Anyways, I thought it was a nice touch to making the documents look "authentic." Blacking out curse words.

AM I NOT MERCIFUL...that gave me CHILLS! Reminded me a lot of the movie, I, Robot. And I agree, it took me a bit to get into, even though I was enjoying it, but about the same point you were at David, it TOOK OFF! Then I couldn't put it down!

Oh and David, if you like interesting formats, you NEED to read this book, one of my faves! Heidi recommend it, and its GOOD! Last Days of Summer by Steve Kluger

Thanks for the rec Jenny!!

To your point, I found some of it funny and realistic. It was more the parts that were typed vs spoken. I just didn't think the characters would have time to swear when typing quick messages and running around hiding from zombies lol. Also the official surveillance reports would be more professional and not include the swearing or literary prowess IMO. But other than that, I'm enjoying it immensely. Almost finished :)

You wouldn't believe the frequency of my swearing when I'm in stressful or dire situations. I start messaging my friends to let out all my emotion and drop bombs like nobody's business. LOL
I see where you're coming from but I did find the blacked out swearing pretty funny and relatable.

Lol!! Ok then, I guess I couldn't relate for personal reasons then but I guess others did :) However, I will challenge you this: if you are ever chased by zombies in a spaceship in the outer reaches of space and you're frantically typing into a handheld device and trying to find your friend, see if you take the extra time to swear in those instant messages. Maybe you will, maybe not :P

Welcome :) If you read it, let me know what you think!

And like I said, I completely see your point. I guess I never worry too much in these kind of reads in how "realistic" all the details are...I mean, the whole thing is hard to imagine actually happening, although I suppose its possible! It did feel real while I was reading it. But, yes, I probably would not be typing any extra words I didn't need to in a life or death situation!

I'm glad you're enjoying the read!

Lol literally if I was being chased by zombies, the only thing I would be able to say/type would be curse words. ;)

I curse like a sailor in the privacy of my home or office. And when I'm talking back and forth with my business partner by IM, every other word seems like a curse word, especially during rants. In fact we've had entire conversations using every variation of the F bomb we can think of. ;) It's a good stress reliever! And we always feel loads better after. I don't normally curse in public though.

This conversation has been so eye-opening LOL! My parents are both Mormon, so swearing would earn me some serious punishment as a kid. I guess it carried over to adulthood, although I'm not exactly religious myself.
