Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments I know this is a subject that we've talked about some in the 2015 group but since we're bound to have new members and we're on the brink of a new year, I thought I'd bring it up again!

Do you plan to read in order in 2016 or jump around?

Last year I started reading in order but I found that made it even more challenging for me because I often get in reading moods and want to read a certain type of book that may or may not fit into the weekly category. Still, I like to try and challenge myself so that is my plan again this year - to try and read in order. If I manage to stick to it for the most part, I can see myself deviating once or twice for a couple of very anticipated reads that I will want to read as soon as I get my hands on them regardless if they fall into the weeks I have them assigned to. What about you lot?

Also, if you are part of the 2015 group and since I've been working on my 2016 plan today, I'm curious, did you find it more or less difficult to find books for this year's challenge over last year?

message 2: by Maple (new)

Maple (maplerie) | 1025 comments I plan to stick to the order, but I know there will be at least one book that read as soon as I can. I have a student who has been urging me to read The Name of The Wind for the past year. He graduates in May, and the book is towards the end of the list. I want to be able to discuss it with him before he moves on.

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments I planned to read The Name of the Wind in 2016 because it was the highest rated book on my to-read shelf. Then, when I checked it today, I saw another book I'd added - The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia - beat it out. Since The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia is kind of a reference book, I'm thinking of just reading The Name of the Wind anyway. I'm torn on whether or not I think that's cheating. ;)

The Name of the Wind is one of those books that I've never heard anyone say a bad thing about so I'm kind of hyped to read it.

That's how I feel about it too. Everyone seems to love it; never a bad word spoken of it.

I don't think that's cheating at all. As long as you're reading, that's what counts :)

message 5: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments As for 2015, I'll mostly read in order. I've some books which will be released in 2016, so I'll probably read them when I can, depending on the release dates and the prices (I'm using a lot cheap second hands and ebook sales). There are some sequels of books I read in 2015 so they won't wait until the last weeks of the challenge, I'll probably read them out of order before July.

At first I found more difficult to find books than for the 2015 challenge, probably because I did my 2015 plan with several books from the Choice Awards and there were many very generic categories. For 2016, some were very easy too but I'm not sure about others. I decided to read mostly books from my TBR and children books, so it probably doesn't help too.

message 6: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Unlike the first part of 2015, I'm going to allow myself the flexibility to read out of order to choose books depending on my mood. I have a spreadsheet with tons of ideas for each week, that I'm going to "scan" to choose my next book. As the list is in the chronological order, I may read more or less in order, if my eye gets caught quickly while reading the list (I don't know if I make any sense haha).

message 7: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I lasted a whole week of reading in order in 2015, but I think I might try to read in order in 2016. That said, my choice for Week 1 is War and Peace (what the hell was I thinking?!), and I'm planning on pacing myself with that one, so I'll be reading it along with books from the following weeks as I know I won't be able to focus just on that.

message 8: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (mich2689) | 484 comments I plan on reading in order, but I'll probably jump around a couple of topics.

message 9: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
I like the idea of reading in order, mainly for discussion purposes, but it just isn't a choice for me. Since I use the digital library, it's very unrealistic that I would be able to get a book timed right. I would say that's a downside of the challenge since I really have to choose what book becomes available on my holds list. I managed to remain flexible enough to still really enjoy the challenge but there's no way I could read in order.

message 10: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I think with the A-Z format for threads this time around, discussion will be much more lively as so many books fit into multiple categories. I'm really looking forward to it!

message 11: by Francesca (new)

Francesca | 780 comments I read out of order this year so, initially, I was planning to try and read in order for this year but realistically I doubt that will happen. I've added some books that I didn't read this year into next years challenge and some of them I already own, so I'm probably going to try and read some of those first. Plus there are a few books on my list that I know I'll probably find pretty hefty and that will take me longer to read so I'm likely to push those books towards the end of the year, once I've read most of the shorter/quicker/easier reads first. I also know that if I suddenly really feel an urge to read one of the books then I'm not going to bother waiting for that week to come around.

message 12: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Barstad (maidenoflight) I plan to read in order, but if a book I picked will be a little wait from the library, than I will just jump to the next book. We'll see how it goes.

message 13: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | -19 comments me I try to read in order but if I have a book that I willy want to read and can't wait then I pick that one up,so I guess its out of order for me.

message 14: by Camilla (new)

Camilla I will jump around again, mainly as I do a lot of other challenges and just make some of the books I read for them fit this challenge as well. That's also a reason why I haven't done much planning at least yet, only have some possibilities for books that I would otherwise not read (like the <200 page classic or top 100 mystery novel).

message 15: by Aleksandra (new)

Aleksandra (aleksandrakonwa) Im new member of group and planing jump around. Im planing to read again around 100 , so will have to do it little faster ;)

message 16: by EllenZReads (new)

EllenZReads | 172 comments I will most likely read a few things out of order because I get most of my books from the library.

message 17: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 0 comments I plan on reading out of order. I want to read through all of the books that I own first, then I will go back through the 2016 list (hopefully in order) to complete the remaining categories with books from the library, or newly purchased books from Barnes & Noble :)

I just hate having books at home that I haven't read yet!

message 18: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3839 comments I'm going to TRY to read in order, for the most part, but it will depend on whether I need to check the book out of the library and also my reading mood. I have enough unread books at my house and on my Nook to last for many years but they don't all fit into one of the 52 categories! I'm going to try to read as many of them as possible.

message 19: by Mai (new)

Mai | 102 comments I read out of order this year but I want to try and read in order. I know that it won't happen depending on what mood I am in and also if a new book is released, I will most likely end up reading that.

message 20: by Charity (new)

Charity (faeryrebel78) | 552 comments I'm a jumper. I read books based on my moods so that works best for me. Reading in order is like having homework which makes me not want to read.

message 21: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Does anyone else get the House of Pain song in their head every time they see this thread?

Jump around! Jump around! Jump up jump up and get down!

Maybe it's just me.

message 22: by Francesca (new)

Francesca | 780 comments Hahaha! I didn't, Jody, but I think I will now! Love that song!

message 23: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Hahaha Jody! I'm so going to have this song in my head at each week jump ;)

message 24: by Marta (new)

Marta (gezemice) | 859 comments Definitely jumping around. I agree with Charity - reading in order seems like homework! It is supposed to be fun!

Re: The Name of the Wind, that's my highest rated, too. This category, along with the 16th on your list, is one that changes as you add/read off the list, so I decided to pick the book in that position when I was making the list, so those are the only two set in stone for me. Good thing I am really excited about both - the 16th was A Canticle for Leibowitz.

Haha. I love that song, now I'm totally dating myself.

message 26: by Ella (new)

Ella | 42 comments I'm a jumper, so I think that will continue. That said, I will make more of an effort to join in the current discussions.

message 27: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (xallroyx21) | 28 comments I was pretty good about reading in order in 2015 until I got to summer. I want to read in order, but there are some books I know I will not be able to wait for. I will try to save those after I read the book for the week.

message 28: by Marina (new)

Marina | 1312 comments I read books based on my mood and if it's not a book on my shelf at home it also depends on which books are available at the library, so I'm definitely a jumper.

message 29: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten Tattersall (mothgender) | 28 comments I'll definitely be jumping around, because I don't have access to certain books at the moment, but I'm going to try to stick to the order as close as possible, mostly because a lot of the books near the beginning of the list are the ones I really want to get to.

message 30: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisar87) | 33 comments I'll be jumping around a lot depending on my mood and the availability of some of these books, also.

message 31: by Malgorzata (new)

Malgorzata (therealmadmags) | 18 comments I'll be jumping around a lot, as I did this year, depending on what I feel like reading.

message 32: by Aglaea (new)

Aglaea | 369 comments Seems like jumping around is a good idea to allow myself to do from the beginning. I read by mood and fear self-imposed restrictions that don't have any real reason behind them would only kill my enthusiasm. Spontaneously I choose quite a few no-brainer books, as they affect me the way watching tv does - relaxing - but on my TBR list I have books that have stayed there for a long time now for a very good reason; they aren't necessarily 'feel-good novels'. I do want to read them, though.

message 33: by Silvia (new)

Silvia Turcios | 1058 comments Definitely jumping around, I depend of the availability of the books in the library and sometimes it also depends of the mood :D, so jumping around is much more convenient.

message 34: by Aglaea (new)

Aglaea | 369 comments Oh, I read many library books, too, like Silvia said. We have Overdrive which is how I've read a lot of novels lately, just love it!

message 35: by Francesca (new)

Francesca | 780 comments Looking at my list as it currently is, I'm definitely going to be jumping around. I've put quite a lot of heavy books on my list and quite a few very long books too, so I'm probably going to be spacing them out with some of the shorter and lighter reads in between them.

message 36: by Francesca (new)

Francesca | 780 comments Plus, I've put the Lunar Chronicles series on my list but I had to put them on in the wrong order to make them fit into the categories so I'll be reading those topics out of order to make sure I read that series in order. If you were able to follow what I just typed there then well done because I'm not sure I can even follow it! Lol!

message 37: by Aglaea (new)

Aglaea | 369 comments Ha, it made perfect sense to me, Francesca. I need to investigate the series you mentioned.

message 38: by Jean (new)

Jean Cole (joc724) | 324 comments I'll do my best to go in order but like others alot depends on availability. And I'll definitely be starting Moby Dick early (my choice for Great Opening Line)! In general though it's fun to "read along" with other group members as we approach each topic. So glad I reconsidered my original decision to skip this year!

message 39: by Francesca (new)

Francesca | 780 comments Aglaea wrote: "Ha, it made perfect sense to me, Francesca. I need to investigate the series you mentioned."

Well, I'm glad it makes some sense! Haha! I heard about that series from pretty much everyone else that I'm friends with on here and they've all had very good things to say about it, so fingers crossed!

message 40: by Brandy (new)

Brandy B (bybrandy) | 97 comments We'll see but I'm not usually great at order. If I read two books a week, though, I might do one in order and one out.

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll be jumping around. I'm a huge mood reader, plus I get 99% of my books from the library and have to wait on availability, holds etc. I'm also going through the list twice so that will be two books per task that I'll be doing.

message 42: by Jill (new)

Jill Tool I'll be jumping around because I'll also be using my local library and a lot of the time I'm at there mercy as to when they'll get the book in.

message 43: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia (anastasiaharris) | 1730 comments :) I seem to be the odd one out in this one. I will be following in order. While most of my books come from the library they are older ones, so should not be difficult to get. I am also flexible on the format, most of the recently released books do bot have holds on the audio version so I use that instead.
I also read more than one book at a time, giving me more flexibility for mood etc.
It is more challenging to read in order.

message 44: by Delitealex (new)

Delitealex I'm jumping around according to my mood.

message 45: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3266 comments I'm definitely jumping around since most of my books are coming from the library. Also, since I'm reading mostly after work and on weekends, I want to try to balance out longer and shorter books, and more interesting vs. less interesting topics

message 46: by Adam (new)

Adam Smith (chaos624) | 1197 comments I usually read several books at a time, so I'm going to be jumping around all year.

message 47: by Erica (new)

Erica | 555 comments My plan is to read in order when I can but it depends on when I get holds from the library. At the moment I'm reading Week 3 before Week 2 because that book is due back soon.

I get in "reading moods" too! Consequently I have about three going at the time. I read in last year's challenge about people that did that and it really helped me to speed up. I am also being a lot more lazy about picking my books for a plan this year. Last year I kept changing them and moving them around, so this year I am filling them in as I go. Is that cheating? I will try to do it monthly. I think the idea of a-z commenting is so much better cause it took forever to find stuff last year. Also I think the catagories are a little friendlier and easier to fill.

message 49: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Definitely not cheating! Don't be fooled by the bunch of us that are OCD and have our challenges planned out and laminated as soon as the prompts are confirmed. ;) For me, planning is half the fun - although last year, I think my finished books only barely resembled my initial plan!

message 50: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments IMO it's not cheating to fill in the books on the go. Some crazy control freak like myself love to know what they will read for the entire year, but some people don't, it's up to you.
