Give an author an hour? How good does this work?

What do you do if a book isn't grabbing you? push on or pull back? One rule I go by is to give an author a hour of my time if it is not gripping me by then I figure its not going to? What are you methods when you cant get into a book?

My daughter has tried giving a book up to 40 pages. If unhappy by then she moves on
Could apply to an author as well as just an isolated book

I don't know if this works, as sometimes I read a few pages and cant get into it, then friends will say you MUST read it! or I re read the synopsis and think- actually maybe I should try again and then I can pick it up - sometimes I am glad I did other times I think why am I wasting my time lol!
