Rose (The_Calm_Reader) (roselittlebookowl75) | 1372 comments I have created a new discussion topic where readers can go and ask other people if they have read a certain book and their thoughts on the book. For those thinking of buying a certain book this would be a good resource!

Great idea, Rose!! :)

Rose (The_Calm_Reader) (roselittlebookowl75) | 1372 comments Okay everyone is going to think I'm way behind and lost my mind but I truly haven't read either of these series and would like to hear from people who have read them if they liked them! I know these series are older but here they are! Have you read Harry Potter Boxed Set (Harry Potter, #1-6) by J.K. Rowling ? Also have you read The Millennium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson ? What are your thoughts on either of these?

Rose (The_Calm_Reader) (roselittlebookowl75) | 1372 comments Karen wrote: "Great idea, Rose!! :)"

Thanks Karen!

Harlee | 1583 comments I've never heard of the other series, but I actually have not read Harry Potter! I've seen all the movies and I love them but I just haven't been able to bring myself to read the books!

Hhmmmm.... Harry Potter.. Have I read those??

YES YES YES YES!! Over and over and over in fact! And then I'd read a book and watch the movie. Did that each weekend for 7 weeks! ;)

For The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium, #1) by Stieg Larsson , I listened to it on audio. I really loved the movie so wanted to see what the book was about. It was... long, and appeared to be unedited and filled with too many details, like grocery lists. Huh? But still good enough that I did pick up The Girl Who Played with Fire (Millennium, #2) by Stieg Larsson and same thing; very long with lots of unneccessary facts that should have been edited out, but still interesting enough to continue to The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (Millennium, #3) by Stieg Larsson . But I couldn't finish the last one. It was more political and just too boring. I did all of these on audio BTW. I did hear somewhere that the author died before these were published which may be why they felt unedited. Not sure though.

Rose (The_Calm_Reader) (roselittlebookowl75) | 1372 comments @Harlee the other series is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium, #1) by Stieg Larsson , The Girl Who Played with Fire (Millennium, #2) by Stieg Larsson , and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (Millennium, #3) by Stieg Larsson .

I too have seen all the Harry Potter movies but haven't read the series. Have really been thinking about it!

B.B. Shepherd (bbshepherd) Hi Rose. I was relatively late to the Harry Potter world. I wasn't interested in reading literature aimed at youth, but finally read these and absolutely loved them. I still have all the books. I'll reread them and keep them for future generations!

As for the "Girl" books, I was excited to read "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," as I love suspense/mystery, etc. but found the first book so tedious and formulaic that I doubt I'll read the others. I'll probably see the movies at some point. I tried to keep in mind that the book was translated from Swedish, so that might account for it being poorly written (just a poor translation perhaps?) but it bored and annoyed me. :(

Rose (The_Calm_Reader) (roselittlebookowl75) | 1372 comments Thanks B.B! Harry Potter it is then after I finish the series I'm currently reading!!!

Daniel (pickyreader1) | 1925 comments Rose, Harry Potter is fantastic. I'm not a fantasy fan, but Harry Potter was exceptional in so many ways. I only read it a couple of months ago, I was very late to the party. lol

Has anyone read Angelfall by Susan Ee or Breathe by Sarah Crossan?

Rose (The_Calm_Reader) (roselittlebookowl75) | 1372 comments Thanks Daniel!! I'm excited to read the Harry Potter series & I too am very late at getting around to reading it! I haven't read either of those books you listed.

B.B. Shepherd (bbshepherd) Harlee wrote: "Has anyone read the Legend series by Marie Lu?"

I read Legend and liked it well enough, but didn't think it exceptional in any way. And I really wanted to as I've been a huge fan of Marie Lu's artwork for a long time. I didn't think the sequel Prodigy as good as the first book, but a lot of people liked it better, so I don't know. I'll read the last book, Champion, just to finish the series.

message 19: by B.B. (new)

B.B. Shepherd (bbshepherd) Has anyone read Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1) by Sarah J. Maas or Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea (Between, #1) by April Genevieve Tucholke ? They both sound interesting.

Okay, here we go:

1. HARRY POTTER

One of my favorite book series ever!!! In fact, I think its my favorite. Can't say enough about how I love these books! They are the type of books that will absorb you into this wonderful world. There are masterfully written--every little detail has a purpose that you will find out later on. Just amazing!!

2. The Girl in the Dragon Tattoo
I never mangaed to get through the first one, but one of these days I will try to finish it! I own them all.

3. Angelfall
LOVE LOVE LOVE this book. Also loved the sequel, but not quite as much. Quick amazing reads!

4. Breathe
This one was just okay for me--it made me think of the movie The Lorax quite a bit (the new one). It wasn't a blow your socks off read, but I enjoyed it well enough.

5. Legend
My second favorite dystopian trilogy. The only one I love better is the Hunger games. I'm honestly surprised this one doesn't have more hype, its way better than Divergent! Great concept, great characters, great world building, and an EPIC ending!! LOVE

6. Throne of Glass
One of my favorite fantasies. The sequel is 10 times better, and the novellas are just as good as the books. LOVE the characters and this world. I recommend reading the novellas before reading Throne of Glass, a lot happens in those first 4 stories. Really great back story!

Rose (The_Calm_Reader) (roselittlebookowl75) | 1372 comments @Jenny thanks!!!!!

message 22: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 738 comments I guess I'll do the same thing as Jenny, haha. :)

1. Harry Potter

I actually didn't read the whole series until about three years ago. *GASP* I know, shocking. I tried to read the first couple when I was like 9 years old and gave up halfway through the third book for some reason ... and then it took me nearly a decade to pick them up again, haha. But I did really like them; I'm not the hugest fan ever, maybe because I didn't really grow up with them the same way a lot of people my age did, but I thought they were good. I think the fourth one is my favorite. :)

2. The Girl in the Dragon Tattoo

Yup, read the whole trilogy a few years ago and liked them a lot. I think they could've benefited from more editing; they're pretty dense and have a lot of long-winded passages and extraneous details that probably could've been taken out. (Unfortunately the author died shortly after submitting the manuscripts for publication, so I guess he didn't get to do as much editing as he could have.) But they were still very intense and had a good story. Also Lisbeth Salander is an awesome character!

3. Angelfall

I loved Angelfall! It's very fast-paced and I really liked the characters and story. Like Jenny, I also liked the sequel but not quite as much.

4. Breathe

Nope, haven't read it.

5. Legend

I have kind of mixed feelings about this one. I read the first two and I'm on the fence about reading the third one. I think they're interesting conceptually but I just didn't feel very attached to the characters. I might still pick up the last one just to see how it ends, though.

6. Throne of Glass

I read this pretty recently. It's another one that I had mixed feelings about––again, a plot I liked in concept but I had issues with the characters. I found the main character in particular pretty arrogant and I couldn't get myself to sympathize much with her. But I have heard that the sequel is a LOT better so I'm hoping to read it and see how it is.

Brigid, that last book is easily the best of the trilogy!! READ IT!!! lol (Legend)

As for Throne of Glass, you get so much out of her in the novellas, IMO and the sequel!

Rose (The_Calm_Reader) (roselittlebookowl75) | 1372 comments Thanks Brigid!! I can't believe myself that I haven't read Harry Potter yet but finally now as an adult I am ready to! Thanks for your thoughts! The good thing is I haven't seen all the Harry Potter movies so I won't know how it ends until I read them all :)

Donna (donanicole) | 897 comments Jenny, I so agree with you about the Legend series. Why does this not get more attention? Where is the movie, when is it coming out? It is my very favorite dystopian read, even above the Hunger Games I think. Well, maybe tied. Legend is so much better than Divergent, especially when you consider the ending, but even without.

message 33: by Donna (new)

Donna (donanicole) | 897 comments Oh, and Jenny, I think I might have to put Ashfall in my favorite apocalyptic stories. Although I have yet to read Sunrise, since it is ten bucks so will get from the library, either in paper or digital.

message 36: by Crystal (last edited Mar 31, 2014 12:08PM) (new)

Crystal (cgk22) I LOVED Angelfall as well. I am in the same boat as Brigid regarding Legend, I had a really hard time relating to the characters and have not read anymore of the series...may or may not read haven't decided at this point. I have not read Throne of Glass, but it sounds interesting.
I'm currently reading The Maze Runner, I feel like I'm behind in reading this but it didn't really appeal to me until I saw the trailer for the movie. Anyone read/reading?

Karen’s Library | 11320 comments Mod
I read The Maze Runner 4 times. I didn't like the rest of the series that much but loved the different type of book. There were so many problems with the book, but still loved it. :)

message 38: by Kristina (new)

Kristina The Maze Runner is the best book of the trilogy. But I still enjoyed the 2nd book, 3rd was ok. But I just love the characters and I think that's what makes the series so much better.

message 50: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (pickyreader1) | 1925 comments The Knife of Never Letting Go was great, and the second and third books were actually much better.
The Maze Runner was amazing, and so was Scorch Trials, but I didn't like the Death Cure quite as much.
Legend was a fantastic series, except for the ending which left me hanging.
All highly recommended though.
