This past week I read "Fear" by Bob Woodward and "Pieces" by Sally Field, both very good. I had stared Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari (the author of "Sapiens") but had to set it aside. I've picked it up again and am loving it. I'm also browsing through "Shade" by Pete Souza (presidential photographer to Reagan and Obama). "Shade" juxtaposes 45's tweets and newspaper headlines with photos of 44. I find it both amusing and historically significant.

Sarah (sacksacademy) | 20 comments I am trying to read all the books in A Series Of Unfortunate Events,
before the end of the year. that may not happen. My library card won't let me checkout books. So much for that goal. :(

Oh no! I hope you can get that fixed. I would let the library know asap so they can help you fix the error. Don't be hard on yourself for not reaching your reading goals. Reading is supposed to be fun, not stressful!

Siddhant Nath (yoyopandaking) I just read The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. To put it mildly, let's just say that I wasn't prepared for what happens.

John Warner (jwarner6comcastnet) | 58 comments I just purchased today The Dreamers by Karen Thompson Walker. I loved her inaugural book, The Age of Miracles and hope her second will be just as good. Her first book involves a near future Earth that is slowing down and imagines the social and psychological ramifications of this physical phenomenon. Her newest book has a similar theme in that an epidemic of women are falling to sleep and are not able to be awakened. I would imagine that the author will explore the societal ramifications of this epidemic. The author was thought-provoking in her first and I'm hoping for the ssame in this book.

What a great question. I'm looking forward to finding some new books and authors perusing the responses. This past month I've bought or borrowed and read:

-Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family - JD Vance
-Homo Deus - Yuval Noah Harari
-Becoming - Michelle Obama
-Shelter in Place - Nora Roberts
-Identical Strangers: A Memoir of Twins Separated and Reunited - Elyse Schein and Paula Bernstein
-In Pieces - Sally Field
-I know Why The Caged Bird Sings - Maya Angelou
-A Man Called Ove - Fredrik Backman

I'm listening to:
- My Grandmother Ask Me to Tell You She's Sorry -
by Fredrik Backman (it's great)
- Next up is: Born A Crime - Trevor Noah

I downloaded a bunch of the classic collections available for free and my 2019 resolution is to read through my backlog of unread books before I purchase any more hardcovers. (I can't resist deals and freebies on my Kindle. )

John Warner (jwarner6comcastnet) | 58 comments I purchased today The Personality Brokers: The Strange History of Myers-Briggs and the Birth of Personality Testing by Merve Emre. I am a college professor teaching psychology. I thought this might update some of my lecture on personality psychology, especially trait theories.

Kim (kimkienzle) I just bought The Weight Of Ink at a small bookshop based on the bookseller’s recommendation. Only 50 pages in but I like it and find it very well written.

message 168: by QueenAmidala28 (new)

QueenAmidala28 I bought Becoming by Michelle Obama as a present for my Mother. Otherwise I haven't BOUGHT any books; I borrow 99% of my books from the library :)

message 169: by Wayne (new)

Wayne Oldroyd | 16 comments Started new year with "thank you for being late" very current and applicable to our current living environment. Moved into World War II history by reading "Inferno" and excellent approach to World War II focusing on people not events. Snuck in a few light urban fantasy reads – Rosemary and rue; Serafina.

Just finished The Fifth Season a great addition to speculative fiction/fantasy, a five star read, now onto the next
book

trilogy (Children of Blood and Bone was easily one of my favorite books last year,) it's only fitting that I share Children of Virtue and Vengeance. My wife gifted this stunning hardcover for Christmas.

So I recently purchased Moby-Dick or, the Whale because..well.. I've never read it! Yikes! I know, its one of those classics that everyone out there should have read by now. I just never got around to it but I mean to read it soon!

What is a classic that 'everyone' has read that you haven't?

This one was such a wild ride, very intense. Perfect for my October spooky read. I plan to read more from this author, I like her writing style.
