I FINALLY bought the first book in the Wheel of Time series, The Eye of the World. So excited to get it and read it!

I also purchased Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage because I really like historical non-fiction! I loved The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon and I'm hoping this is just as good!

Allie (awhit99) I finally bought Coraline; I'm obsessed with the movie and I can't believe it took me so long to get the book!

message 103: by Tucker (new)

Tucker Almengor (tuckeralmengor) @Allison Ooh! Coraline is a great book! It's even better than the movie.

Agreed! The movie is great but the book is so much creepier! Especially with all those freaky illustrations.

message 105: by Tucker (new)

Tucker Almengor (tuckeralmengor) @I read both the book and the graphic novel. I prefer the book but the graphic novel has great illustrations!

I haven't read that one yet, but I like Holly Black as an author. She co-authored with Tony DiTerlizzi the Spiderwick Chronicles series that I love! (even though it is a children's series!)

message 122: by Kim (new)

Kim (kimkienzle) Just finished The Good Daughter by Karen Slaughter and recommend it - a good mystery. I’m currently reading Women of the Dunes, and am enjoying that so far. I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of Once Upon A River!!!!! And am starting that next! Absolutely loved 13th Tale so I’m very excited about Diane Setterfields newest book!

message 123: by Heather (new)

Heather I'm in the middle of The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper. It is a enjoyable read and I've even laughed out loud a couple of times!

Nemo Nemo (litercuriousbookreviews) | 3 comments Hello everyone I am a newbie here, I saw your group and thought I would join in the fun.

I have a few recent books that I really enjoyed reading.

The first was a book entitled The wasp that brainwashed the caterpillar by Matt Simon. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

Yes, I know it's an odd title for a book. I picked it due in part to the strange factor but ended up loving it for the humor contained within its pages. Few tomes have the ability to entertain, educate, and to amuse but this is a very rare example of such a gem. Due to this I have no problem at all commending it to any of the other members.

The second book was a significant departure from the previous one as it was a book of fiction. I don't read a great deal of fiction however this book entitled The Outsider, Stephen King https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

led me down the fiction path. I ended up reading three other books by King that contained the characters included in The Outsider. These were as follows: Mr. Mercedes, Finders Keepers, and last but not least End of watch. I found myself engrossed in the degree of degradation described and how well King had woven the stories in such a way that they had almost become one. Genuinely a masterful writer and I highly recommend this series of books to anyone who enjoys to follow the chase across multiple books to a grand conclusion should enjoy these. One word sums up this and that word is magnificent. Linked books as follows:

Mr Mercedes
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Finders Keepers https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

End of watch
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

The third and last book I read was Pandemonium's Engine By Thomas Horn, et. al. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

This book was something of a diversion by comparison to the previous two. The effects of burgeoning technologies was the focus of the book from a religious perspective. The very real potential for horrors stemming from misuse of technology or of a critical misunderstanding of new technological innovations were powerful reminders that while many see improvements in technology particularly transhumanism and gene replication, viewed from Horn's particular religious bias proved for terrifying reading. The very real dangers were covered with benefits being left out of the mix. If you should decide to read this for yourself I recommend you try not to read it before going to bed. If you do have any knowledge of new and evolving technologies you will probably not sleep to well. The subject matter is deep and disturbing and in no way could it ever be considered light reading.

Well that is it, these were a few of my most recent books. I look forward to reading about books you all found interesting or noteworthy.

Thank you for the recommendation for Endurance.

From the first it was clearly an engrossing tail of trial and error. I am sure it prove to be an excellent read.

I totally agree with you Kim. I just finished it a couple of days ago. I thought the writing was pretty lackluster, but I still rounded up to 4 stars because of the intriguing true story behind it.

Glad it’s not just me. A friend loved it and raved about it, and I do like that it’s loosely based on a true story, but I I feel like the story could have been written so much better. It feels rather amateurish, almost like it’s his first book.
