I think Margaret Atwood left a lot to be desired in regards to the plot.. thus leaving a lot of freedom for the reader, which is also probably related to the fact that the character/s in the book had no freedom. They did not have a "freedom from" or a "freedom to."

So what speculations did you come up with? What kind of personal liberties/assumptions did you take with regards to the plot?


Caele | 32 comments I think it's clear from the epilogue that she made it out of that house safely, but it's unclear where exactly she ended up. And I think the way Atwood did a "historical" look back at the narrator made it less personal - so often we've heard stories similar to this from the plights of refugees or the Underground Railroad. So I was able to personally detach a little from the narrator and it mattered slightly less what happened to her at the very end. It was her story that was important.

Hmmm I never thought of it that way... but I guess you're right.. By detaching myself from Offred's perspective, it became no longer just about her but about her message.
