Edwin.Florez I think one round character in the Martian is Mark. He is funny and smart. He isn't a dynamic character because he doesn't change throughout the book.

Chris Penna I agree. When I started this book, I wasn't sure it would keep my interest. I mean how much can one person entertain us being stuck on Mars? Marks challenges kept me turning the pages!

Edwin.Florez The rest of the characters are pretty flat. We don't know anything about them. The only thing we know about them is that they work at NASA and they are trying to save Mark. The only things we know about Marks crew is that they worked with him, went to Mars with him, and that they try to save him.

mkfs Agreed, the background characters are all pretty poorly-developed. The most embarassing caricature was the NASA tech who spots him on satellite camera. I got the impression that Weir's sole attempt to tone down the cliché was to make the character female.

Edwin.Florez The one reason why the back round characters were important was because they helped come up with the idea on how to save Mark. To do that there had to be dialogue. Pretty much the dialogue of the back round characters are really the only important thing they did including the idea of how to save Mark.
