He has an accident at some point and it gets decided he will pretend to mentally challenged from that point on in order to disguise his involvement with the government. For some reason he has to get married. Maybe him and the lady are found in a compromising situation?

I'm leaning towards the Heroine being in desperate need of a husband for either financial gains or because she's ruined and traps him because she feels she can help take care of him stead of being an unwanted burden to someone else.

But I remember the wife starts to suspect her husband must be faking and is incredibly talented at acting stupid. She tries it herself a few times on him and she suspects he's trying not to laugh.

I remember laughing a lot.

Kimber (kimberlibri) | 158 comments You can look for books or re-tellings of The Scarlet Pimpernel because that is the basis of every book with this plotline. Must be a list somewhere.

The goodreads description doesn't mention anything about how stupid he pretends to be to his wife and friends.
