Trixie | 93 comments I don't remember much about this book, I think it might have been a reader's digest condensed book.

There was a girl travelling by coach, horse and buggy days, to her male relative's house to live. She was waiting for him in a room and she wanted to deeply curtsy so the sunlight would catch her hair and make it look more auburn or something. But he was late, so she had to change her position to catch the sunlight as the sun moved. When the male relative did show up he seemed to know what she was doing, and he kind of tripped her so she would fall and he exclaimed, "That's impudence!"

I always wondered what happened, because I never finished that book.

Trixie | 93 comments Sorry, I read it maybe in 2004 or so, but I had the feeling that it was a book written much earlier, like from the 1950s. No cover information.

Sue Elleker | 1055 comments Mist Over Pendle by Robert Neill. He swirled his cape round her ankles while she was curtseying.

Lsophia | 162 comments Also known as The Elegant Witch. She wanted to highlight her red/auburn hair, because it was a family trait.

Link for Sue's suggestion - Mist Over Pendle by Robert Neill.

Trixie | 93 comments Well...neither of these titles sounds familiar, honestly, but I have no memory of the title. The description of the cousin as a Squire named Roger does sound vaguely familiar, so I'm going to call this Solved. I won't know till I order and receive the book if it's the right one. I hope I may re-open this thread in a few weeks if it isn't the right one.

Tricia, we can move your request to the "Possibly Solved" folder. Just come back and let us if you've found your book. Looking at the book blurbs, it sounds like you think Mist Over Pendle might be your book?

message 8: by Trixie (new)

Trixie | 93 comments Yes, I will look for it in Possibly Solved in a few weeks and give a definitive answer then. Thank you!

message 9: by Lsophia (new)

Lsophia | 162 comments Just to clarify - it's the same book. Mist Over Pendle was the original title, and it was re-released at The Elegant Witch later on.

message 10: by Trixie (new)

Trixie | 93 comments Yes, I understood...I ordered Mist Over Pendle because the same book by the name The Elegant Witch was much more expensive.

Trixie | 93 comments All right, the book came in the mail from overseas (so it took a while) and this is it! I had probably read a condensed version-- this book has the passage I described, just with more added than I originally read. It can be moved to SOLVED by whoever does that.
