This is a really visual book, but as someone unfamiliar with New York I'm finding that I'm having to research the modern locations so that I can understand the historical descriptions. One example is that the city hall is cleaner - but it is assumed that I know what the modern building looks like. Perhaps it's famous across the USA, but I'm reaching out to Google for help :-)I'm actually enjoying the book and the experience immensely. Up until now my mental image of modern New York drew largely on "Friends".

The World building history is fascinating. As terrible as that part was, I really enjoyed reading it.
A bit of a tangent but Time and Again mentions the popularity of Lew Wallace's book, Ben Hur. I was a bit skeptical so poked around and found two tidibts in wikipedia."Ben-Hur remained at the top of the bestseller lists until the publication of Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind (1936)."
"Wallace was deluged with requests to dramatize it as a stage play, but he resisted, arguing no one could accurately portray Christ on stage or recreate a realistic chariot race."
The interesting thing was how both of these concerns were addressed.
