Elspeth Hall (elspeth_grace) Hi I have read all your start up posts and am still a little confused as to how it works for books in a series.

Are only stand alone books allowed or could say the first part of a trilogy be submitted providing readers are warned before hand? And if series are allowed how does one go about parts 2, 3, 4 ...

I ask because as a beta reader I was once sent the middle of a series without being told (or sent/directed too the previous instalments) and when I privately asked the author about certain things her reply was "if you read the first book you'd know" ....

Hello Elspeth,

Within the Review Group probably your best bet is to converse with Emma Jaye who moderates a wide range of book genres. I have been involved with several of these groups but mainly as an author in my own right, seeking reviews through writing them for other authors. Note that reciprocal reviewing is not acceptable here.

There is also the Genre Specific Review Group (GSRG) where genre topics like thrillers, sci-fi, fantasy and even children's books are run - the latter I notice you have authored. It is usual to submit stand-alone books and "blockbusters/trilogies" are a recent new venture I believe.

If you are interested in a specific children's books review group I am currently moderating two and you are welcome to take a look.

Best Wishes,
G.J. Griffiths

Elspeth Hall (elspeth_grace) Hi thanks. Had a look, looks good. I shall hopefully be ready to take part in December. (I'm in the middle of moving house at the mo.) It was non-reciprocal I was looking for.

Emma Jaye | 3693 comments Tut tut Graham, blowing your own trumpet again lol!

I must make a note of that link, you'll have to mod a different type of round though, if you're ever going to have the dubious pleasure of moderating me for a change...

Emma Jaye | 3693 comments Hi Elspeth,

sorry for having a quick dig at Graham first, we've enjoyed a healthy 'sparring' relationship for quite some time.

Which books are we talking about? There's only one up on your goodreads page? It looks like a short children's book. If that is what you are intending to submit, I agree with Graham, the genre review group is probably your best bet. Most of our groups involve full length novels, so you'd be doing a disproportionate amount of reading.

If they are full sized works, what I advise people to do is to always go with the first in a series, then if you come across people again in subsequent rounds you can offer them the next one to review. I've got a couple of series and this works quite well.
Readers tend to get sucked into the series via the first book, so reviews on that one are usually the most important.
If you desperately want a review on the second or third in a series, it is permissible to add a brief synopsis of the other book so your reviewer understands the plot when you send them the book.

We also have word count criteria rounds,in the novella all books must be under 45,000 words.
It might also 'pay' to have the books combined as a collection and submit as a single volume. As long as it is available on amazon, it can be included.

Any questions please shout.

Elspeth Hall (elspeth_grace) Thanks Emma. The one on good-reads is part one of the trilogy , my publisher upped sticks and moved to Canada during the summer holidays (her father had to be repatriated due to health) so parts 2 and 3 ended up getting delayed. They should (fingers crossed) be coming out over Christmas and National book week respectively. My books are only 3,000 words long including dedication etc. so I think given time constraints at the minuet I'll join Graeme's group. Though I shall certainly pop back if my next book gets big enough to be classed as a novella. Or I get enough time off to join the readers group :)
Thank you for your help.
