This is my first time re-reading, I should say re-listening to Red Rising. I have listened to Golden Son twice because it was so good and I plan to listen to it again after Red Rising. Mostly because I can't wait for Morning Star to come out next year. First I must say that the narrator does an excellent job with these books so far. He really submerges you into the material with his accent and voice talents. So if you haven't listened to the audio-book, give it a try. It has gotten to the point that when I actually read the book it is the narrator's voice I hear in my mind. He makes a great distinction between his "Red" voice and accent and his "Gold" voice and accent. He pulls it off nicely. Anyway I just wanted to comment about how much I am enjoying this re-read and realizing all of the things that I missed the first time through. There was so much foreshadowing during Darrow's final conversation with his Uncle before he went to cut Eo down to bury her. I didn't remember that from the first time I read it. Plus how much disdain he had for his Uncle but later realizes that his Uncle was more of a father to him than his real father. I know this might be looking forward in Red Rising a little bit, but the first time Darrow meets Severo was epic for me as well. Please Pierce keep up the good work. We are all looking forward to the release of Morning Star!
Should I feel guilty that i failed to fight the urge and went ahead and finished the book early? please forgive me for I am weak >__<
Just getting into Part II. Interesting to see how quickly Darrow must mature under the circumstances, going from boyish to more of an adult. The transition was not as noticeable on my first read.
Finished part 2 just now, and my favorite part of this section either has to be his training (especially the description of the dances he does), or the world building that takes place, establishing a history and showing how this world came to be, at least in a certain capacity.(view spoiler)
Was wondering exactly how long it was from first carving to the institute? The book mentions weeks and months but never a real timeline.I do like Mateo my good man!

Two years.
Part 2 is where we get hooked.Seeing Darrow being transformed from a Martian Hobbit to a Space God?Priceless.We get our first mention of the AshLord here and I really want to see this guy in Morning Star.He looks to be the DarthVader of the Red rising verse.
Question is He a Olympic Knight?Or just the Soveirgn General?
Also why are Violets Carvers?Arent Violets the entairtaners of Society?Shouldnt Carvers be Yellows since Carving requires medical expertise?

The yellows lack artistic vision, while it is forced upon the violets. They would likely work together in a carving situation, with the violets providing the ideas and the yellows making it happen. However, as it appears violets specialize in certain areas, carvers like Mickey could probably act as cosmetic surgeons, even if they did not fully understand the why of the medical procedures, just the how.

This is my third read through and still loving it. So amazing to read in smaller fits. Thank you answering the question about the length of time .
I found the passage to be particle upsetting each time.
Rereading this portion jus revealed helped me figure out something BIG about Quicksilver.

On top of that, if Fitchner had any influence on the process, he wouldn't want Darrow to verse Julian (view spoiler)
I've just finished reading Part II for the first time...wow. One thing that struck me was the more opulent and powerful the tiers of Colors became, the more alone and isolated the individuals seemed. Darrow's life in the mines was unbelievably difficult and fraught with danger but this was eased by a sense of family and community. The higher Colors, in particular the Golds, view community and family as a means to an end, not as shelters in storms. The most chilling was how irrelevant and de-valued life has become for those in control. Even though life in the mines was short-lived, the loss of life was still deeply felt and those who had passed still remembered and missed.

I wonder if the Golds intentionally created a family-based society to make Reds more willing to sacrifice for what they are told is "the greater good". Also, this intense familial bond fosters a sense of competition to win the laurel for one's own family, which would likely raise production in the mines.

At first, it was to slow me down so I didn't speed through, but I'm really appreciating Tim Gerard Reynolds' performance so far. I agree that the distinction between accents is amazing.
I have two other friends reading with me for the first time...I'm hoping they get as hooked on these books as I am!

I am so glad I picked up the audio book version! It's a totally different experience! LOVE it! I am picking up so many little details that I missed the first time around. Fantastic storytelling!
Something I'm curious after reading. When Darrow is mentioning his learning literature. Is this a list of Pierce's favorite works or works that influenced the writing of the trilogy.
