Welcome BLAD!

message 953: by just lori (new)

just lori (lgraber1212gmailcom) | 26 comments Hi, my name is Lori. I grew up as a ravenous reader. However, sometime between child #4 and child #5 I just ran out of time for "me" reading. Three years ago I made a new year's resolution to get back to reading. I'm happy to say that this is one resolution that I kept. I have joined multiple reading challenges over the last few years to try to stretch myself as a reader. A few I liked but more were ones that I would only do once. I'm trying to find that balance between getting outside of my comfort zone and reading for enjoyment/relaxation. My favorite genres are sci-fi/fantasy, detective/crime, and historical fiction.

Welcome, Lori! With a houseful of kids, I'm impressed you can read at all. I started to get more reading done when my 2 kids were in school and I had a job where I actually got a 15-minute break that I could use for reading.

Many of us share your favorite genres. Feel free to check out our various threads, join our Winter Challenge, and share your reads with us as the year goes along.

message 955: by Julie (new)

Julie Hi,

I saw this group through a GR friend and thought it looked fun! The 52 books should tie in nicely with my year’s goal of 60 books.

I’m after variety in my reading choices, so this is a good way to achieve that. My favourite genres are historical, romance, Biblical, fantasy and mysteries.

Look forward to finding my way around here and joining the discussion threads!

Welcome, Julie! I see you especially like Georgian and Regency romance, as do I (also Historical fiction, fantasy and mysteries). If you would like to do our Winter Challenge, you can count any books you read since the date it started. We will have a Read-a-thon late in January and there are many discussion threads you are welcome to participate in.

message 957: by Julie (new)

Julie Thanks very much Robin. :) I love how creative all the prompts are, look forward to joining in!

Rachel F (rachelbookdragon) | 1 comments Hi all,
I’m Rachel, sorry I joined last Nov/Dec but didn’t get a chance to introduce myself.
Im 31, soon to be 32.
I am a avid reader since childhood.

Welcome, to you too, Rachel! No one is required to introduce themselves but we enjoy learning about you. As a childhood reader, you might like to chime in on our Weekly Question here

message 962: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca B. | 28 comments Hi, I'm Rebecca and am looking forward to doing this challenge. Reading has always been a big part of my life - for pleasure, education and adventure. I am anticipating a great journey with this group!

message 963: by Tracy (new)

Tracy | 2978 comments Welcome Rebecca! This is my second year with the challenges, and I’ve loved it! I especially like voting season when we decide on the prompts for the following year. So much great reading to look forward to. My friends think it’s weird when I tell them “oh, I’m going to read that book NEXT year”, like, why would you plan that far ahead?

Great to have you, Rebecca! You can jump into our yearly challenge or quarterly challenge and count any books you read during the appropriate time.

message 966: by Denise (new)

Denise | 524 comments Hi, I'm Denise in California. I'm a high school teacher, cat mom, and have never met a book I wouldn't read. I found this challenge a couple months ago and am getting caught up posting my reading. My goal was 60 books BEFORE I found the challenge, so this will help me keep up.

Looking forward to joining the summer challenge. I hope I am keeping up with the posts correctly: I created a post with the summer reading list to update, I created my yearly list post to update, have answered a few weekly questions, and have added some reads to the spreadsheet.
Anything else to know?

message 967: by Robin H-R (new)

Robin H-R Holmes Richardson (acetax) | 956 comments Hello...I'm Robin from Central Oregon. I'm jumping in a little late, so I'm going to update with books I've read so far for other challenges.
My favorite books are historical fiction. I have a passion for Jack the Ripper and Chicago gangsters. I read a lot of mysteries and my TBR shelf is HUGE. I'm not much of a "planner"; I read what I am drawn to at the time.. I'm also a big sports fan...especially baseball.

Welcome from another Robin! Yes, you can apply any books you read this year. Historical fiction is my favorite also, including historical mysteries. I'll have to check out your shelves!

**Wow, I just checked and our tastes are 88% similar, that is one of the highest I've seen. I will send you a friend request.

Welcome Robin! I did the exact same thing when I joined late in the year. This will be good practice. It’s a nice way to ease into the process. There is a lot of flexibility here, which makes it fun.

Christine | 2 comments Hi! I'm Christine in Minnesota. I feel like I've been in a bit of a reading dry spell lately, so I'm hoping to get my reading jump started again by jumping into the ATY 2023 challenge! I will use the books I've read so far this year. I doubt I'll finish all 52 by December 31, but it will be fun trying. :-)

Welcome Christine! I joined in June my first year doing the challenge and ended up finishing the year with exactly 52 books read -- the most I had ever read in one year. Here's hoping you have a successful first year!

Welcome Christine,

I lived in MN for over 25 years before moving a bit south to Wisconsin. Feel free to join in our Seasonal Reading Challenge if you like, as well as the year-long one. And you are just in time to participate in the crazy months-long ritual of nominating and voting for our books of the next year!

Karin | 746 comments Hi--I've heard of this group so often that I was sure I used to be a member, but I've never posted in this thread so may be mistaken. I have done a challenge like this and thought it was here.

It might be because I have 34 GR friends in this group and some are very active (like Robin P). I may be too late for this year unless we can jump in and use any books we've read within the year, but hope to do this in 2024.

message 978: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 60 comments Hello, I am Joanne (and also a friend of Karin and also of Robin from other groups). I have been looking for new group challenges since last year-been on GR's for many years doing the same challenges and it is time to change things up a bit.

I am a fan of HF and Fantasy and I read a lot of NF. Looking forward to a new adventure in 2024

You're welcome to use any books you've read this year and apply it to the 2023 challenge. We are very open and welcoming here... you won't find the book police in this group!

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 576 comments Hi. Following Robin P, Karin and Joanne all of whom I know from another group. I like reading challenges and look forward to seeing what ATY prompts make it for 2024.

I'm in six F2F book groups, so those books always take precedence in my reading schedule. If they fit a prompt that will be a bonus!

Yes, Karin (and others), you can count any books you read in 2023 toward this year's challenge. So it's not too late and I know you are all big readers who will be able to fit your books in. In ATY, the rule is "if you say it fits, it fits" - "creative" interpretations of prompts are accepted, even appreciated.

Doctor | 4 comments Hi everyone! I’m late to the party but I always have a good time. I’m Dr Williams, Doc or DW. I like all romance except historical 🫤, mystery, suspense, thriller but no horror. And I read my first fantasy this year! Glad to be here. My goal is to complete 50% since I am so late. 😇

Welcome Doc, and please feel free to retroactively assign books you've read this year to prompts. Lots of people do it that way and find they've read more than they realized!

Welcome! The rule in ATY is, "if you say it fits, it fits", so you should be able to find slots for almost anything you've already read this year.

Nicki (nickislater) Hi, all! I’m Nicki and I live in Northeast Texas. Just retired so I have a lot of reading time available to me now! I’m hoping this group will lead me to new authors & titles I may not encounter on my own.

I look forward to jumping in on the 2024 challenges. For now, I’ll just lurk, read all the threads and get the lay of the land! Thanks for having me.

Hi and welcome, Nicki! If you feel like it, you can still do the 2023 challenge by plugging in any books you read so far this year. But if you'd rather wait, that's fine too. We have monthly challenges, for instance the Autumn/Fall one just started, and we have weekly questions and other entertainments from time to time.

I have joined this group to expand my reading and already have so many new books on my TBR list.
