Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) Hi Emily and Laurel!! Thank you!!

I do a bit of jazz but absolutely AMATEUR! lucky coincidence. I'm in a few bands and love it.

Catsalive | 60 comments Hello, I'm Kylie in Australia. I've just been looking around & have put my hat in the ring for the ATY52 Challenge. I'm a random reader & really don't like sticking to a plan so I'll be slotting them in as & when they fit. I've only recently emerged from a very long slump so here's to a full 52 weeks of happy reading!

Welcome, Kylie! This is a very flexible challenge so however you want to do it is great. Feel free to check out our various discussion threads for ideas.

Yu-Xuan Chen | 5 comments Hi, my name is Yu-Xuan. I'm from Taiwan and I'm new here for both GoodReads and this group. I love reading and I'm trying to read books in English. Although I'm late for three months, I still want to join this group and push myself into reading. I might not stick to the plan though, for I'm not sure how fast I can read. Nice to meet you here. :)

Great to have you! It's not too late to join the challenge. You could count any books you have read since Jan 1, whether in English or other languages. We also have our spring challenge going on.

message 909: by Yu-Xuan (new)

Yu-Xuan Chen | 5 comments Thank you, Emily and Robin. It would be exciting for me if I can complete the tasks by reading books only in English, plus I love challenges!

Ana (ana_sg88) | 138 comments Hello. I'm Ana from Portugal. I love to read from a very young age. Initially I only read one genre, Fantasy, but over the years I discovered new genres and today I am open to new literary challenges. I only discovered your group now, and I know we are more than halfway through the year, but I would like to be able to participate.

♞ Pat Gent | 402 comments Hi Everyone.

I'm Pat. I stumbled across this group while doing a task for my Novel Challenge at the Nothing But Reading Challenges group.

I work at one of the branch libraries for the Metropolitan Library System of Oklahoma County, so reader's advisory is an important part of my job and I'm always looking for a fresh way to find a good book.

I'm finishing up with the You'll Love This One yearly roadtrip - just 25 books to being done with that one, making a total of 150 books for 2022. I also like the Seasonal Reading Challenge, but the points are just too much pressure, and I feel like a failure when I can't get all the tasks completed, so I've been looking for something a little more relaxed but with a level of accountability, and I think this group has been exactly what I've been looking for!

I'm excited to see 2023 on the horizon, and I may get my toes wet with the 2022 winding up prompts.

Nice to be here, and looking forward to meeting everyone!

message 918: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (djinnia) | 657 comments Well, this is a little late — like a year almost 😅 — but HI!

I’m Mandy. I joined the group this year in February, if I remember correctly. Y’all have probably already seen me in the wild discussion and voting threads.

I’m a children’s librarian in a very rural town with about 2000+ people in the county. So I’m in book heaven daily since I love adding all those banned books that are so offensive nowadays to my collection. 😼 I also created our manga, graphic novel, light novel collection from scratch. And massively added to the dismally bare YA collection. The last librarian didn’t believe in either genre. Sigh.

I have two fur kids that love barking at the invisible things outside and the leaf that fell 500 miles away. I’ve been an avid reader since I can remember.

My favorite books as a kid were Butterfly Ball and the nonsanitized versions of Grimm. Cinderella and Allerleirauh (all fur) being my favorites. Heels and toes and plucked eyeballs. All Fur is still my favorite today. A princess who saves herself. One of the few I’ve found.

I also love manga, anime, and light novels. They are fun and silly like Bofuri but can be thoughtful and serious like A Silent Voice. I also read other genres like ya, fantasy, sci fi, and classics (I try to read one a year).

I love visual media and fill in my non-reading time with movies and tv shows. I get my mysteries and thrillers and history fixes this way. I love Xianxia and Wuxia shows (Viki.com is the bomb) and love finding translated books in these genres. (Even fan-lations).

My book collection has exploded out of control (again)and I must definitely downsize. Again. The third time in two years. 😂

Tracy | 2978 comments Hi Mandy - nice to more formally meet you beyond seeing you in Wild Discussion, etc.

Love all your book background details, but one thing stuck with me. Am I understanding you correctly that the previous librarian where you work “didn’t believe in YA”?! Or where you referring to just the anime/manga, etc. (which is still odd, but at least more understandable)?

Glad you are there now to rescue your library!

Welcome to both of you and Mandy, thanks for your important work in making all kinds of reading available and fun for young people.

I joined this group after getting burned out with other challenges that seemed too specific. Last year I went the other direction, joining the Seasonal Reading Challenge. I was inspired by Book Concierge who said she knows she will never complete the whole thing, so there’s a certain freedom, I am the same way. I do enjoy knowing that there are people who read even more than I do. Some of those people read A LOT, like 300 books a year!

The only reason I can do any challenges is that I am retired and have no children or grandchildren around. When I was working and raising kids, I was lucky to read 30 books a year (not counting the multiple reads of favorite picture books!)

I have a coworker (who is an English teacher!) who doesn't see reading YA as reading real books. It's incredibly frustrating to me, since I love YA and I know kids are much more likely to get into reading if they are presented with novels that show characters like them!

That is disappointing to hear. Have they even read one? I have found them to be as well-written (and in some cases better) than those written for "adults". When my son was in 7th grade, I complained to his English teacher that all he wanted to read were comics. Her response? "It's reading, Gail. Let him be." It made all the difference in the world to his future self. (Well, that and forced piano lessons...)

I just can't imagine books like The Book Thief, Code Name Verity, and Salt to the Sea (just a few examples) NOT being "real" books.

Kat | 14 comments Emily wrote: "I have a coworker (who is an English teacher!) who doesn't see reading YA as reading real books.."

That is so sad. English teachers can do often do more harm than good.

My high school "Creative Writing" teacher gave a double grade for composition over a single grade for grammar. She would give an automatic F for run-on sentences or comma splices. She also insisted that neither "alot" nor "a lot" were words and would give an automatic F for grammar when used, resulting in a grade of AA/F, averaged to B- or C+.

She did make me a very good editor but I lost my love of writing. It only took one such grade to switch me to writing really bad poetry that couldn't be graded that way.

RoXXie | The Art of Reading (roxxiesixx) | 119 comments Hello everyone,

I am RoXXie, a vivid reader from Germany. I read and listen to audio-/books in German and English.
I came across this amazing group by accident and decided I will join in. Also, I will give it a try and participate in the ATY Challenge for 2023.

I just would like to know where I can find this ominous NPR “Books We Love” lists. I am sorry, but I am not familiar will all abbreviations used within the English-speaking reader's community.

Happy reading

Welcome RoXXie! it's great to have a new member. You can of course participate in any of the discussions for 2022 while you prepare for next year.

We have a number of international participants. Please feel free to remind us if we use US-centered terminology that isn't clear to everyone.

I adore audiobooks myself, as it's a way to get books into lots more time, when I am exercising, driving, doing housework, etc.

Hi Robin,

thank you and don't worry I will ask if some things are not clear for me. I don't mind the US-centered terminology once I figure it all out. :D

For the rest of 2022 I will just sit back and watch how things are done around here, to get a feeling of the group. Good thing 2023 is around the corner, and I am very eager to dive into this challenge.

Oh yeah, I kinda discovered the pros for audiobooks, as you stated them, in 2020. Until then, I had a hard time getting into audiobooks at all. But now, I am in love with them. ❤️

Ashley✨ | 8 comments Hello everyone, I'm Ashley from Florida. Originally I discovered the 2022 ATY Reading Challenge earlier this year and thought it would a good idea to challenge myself and try something new. I found it interesting to do throughout the year while reading books that give me a reason to read them. This is my first challenge I found passion in and decided to join in the group as well! I look forward for the next year's challenge too.

I read mostly romance books but I like to try a lot of different genres. Second most common genres I read are fantasy, mystery, suspense and thriller.

Hi,
I'm Jenny, I live in the UK with my parents and cat, Jaffa. I'm starting the challenge in 2023, after being introduced to it by Barbara over on Litsy :-)

I read all sorts, but my top genres are history/historical fiction and my least are horror and romance (although I do read Gothic and LGBTQIA+ stuff!)

Looking forward to getting to know you and starting the challenge next year!

message 935: by Robin P, Orbicular Mod (new)

Welcome, Jenny! Historical fiction is also my favorite and horror y least favorite. You are welcome to participate in any of our seasonal challenges and readathons as well as the year long challenge.

message 936: by Bea (new)

Bea | 430 comments Oh, my. I think I am crazy. I am already in several GR groups and recently joined the PopSugar one. Now I am adding another!

My favorite genre is Mystery. But I also really enjoy Cozy Mystery, Paranormal, and Fantasy for that quick fun read.

I am a widow with an elderly dog. I like gardening, camping and generally learning something new. Currently that is photography and Spanish.

Starting this for the 2023 reading year.

Ta || bookishbluehead (bookishbluehead) | 75 comments Hi everyone, I'm Ta, 32, from Germany. I've been a member for some time now, but never really came around to posting something or actually doing the challenge. Next year will be different though (I hope). :D

I love reading (obviously), planning, gaming and traveling. I read everything that comes my way, mostly Fantasy, Horror and Sci-Fi and romance. Whatever I'm in the mood for. My least favorite is probably historical fiction, but one of my goals for next year is to read more of that genre as well.

My favorite book is The Hobbit. I love llamas. I just got married on 10/22. I live in Surry, VA USA!

Welcome, Chelsea! And congratulations on being a newlywed!

Feel free to jump into any of our activities. There is a Winter Reading Challenge that just started Dec 1 and goes through Feb. We have a Read-a-thon for a week starting this Sunday, Dec 11. where you. as a team member or as an individual, can make a dent in all the TBR piles in your home or online. And you can begin planning your 2023 year and get ideas from the various threads that are set up for each prompt.

Jennifer W | 678 comments Hi all! I'm Jennifer from Upstate NY. I came browsing after those evil, evil ;) people over at the Popsugar group kept talking about your challenge, and once I looked, my competitive side took over and I decided I had to try.

I like realistic, historical, mysteries and nonfiction books the most, but I'll read most anything every once in a while. I share my home with my 4 year old daughter, boyfriend, and 2 cats, all of whom keep me on my toes! When I'm not reading books, I'm reading the news, watching sports or documentaries (and more kids' shows than I care for...).

message 950: by BLAD (new)

BLAD (bladisglad) | 2 comments My name is BLAD and I am GLAD to be here! I discovered this group on Christmas, actually. I have been wanting to get back into consistent reading for a while and I've begun to take action by updating my Goodreads account! But then I discovered that there are groups... and this one certainly caught my eye. 😊

2022 has been a stressful and draining year for me, and I have kinda lost touch with my inner creativity because of it. Although I love to binge Netflix shows and watch musicals, I have realized that literature is the foundation of those things and life itself. And it is of utmost importance to me as a writer, actor, and musician.

So, in my "stress-free 2023", I plan to do good things for myself. And I hope some of that occurs here. 💓

Anyways, here r some things to know about me: I'm from the Philippines, but I grew up in Seattle, WA. I love to read YA, thrillers + non-fiction, but I'm open to reading any genre. Lastly, I love going to used bookstores. 💫
