Locke & Key
November 2015 Group Listen-Locke and Key by Joe Hill
It's a full cast dramatization of the entire graphic novel series. I believe there were 6, total? (I'm not sure because I bought the complete series compiled into one hard cover.)The audio features Kate Mulgrew, Haley Joe Osmont and Stephen King, among others, and is over 10 hours long.

Wow, I didn't know such a thing existed! I bet you could kill someone with that, as big and heavy as it must be. :-) I have the individual hardbacks, still kicking myself that I didn't take the first 3 to get signed when I met Joe Hill and Gabe Rodriguez a few years back! It is a truly amazing series...
I am just dying to listen to this. I have been wanting to read the novels for years, but for some reason never got around to it. I was skeptical about transforming a graphic novel into an audiobook, but the reviews are killer, so now I am super excited. Oh, and the free thing is pretty unbelievable!
I started listening to this on my way home from my weekend get away. I'm ok with the format so far but I can see how it can be tricky. 1 hr into the book (view spoiler)

Got it, thanks. it will finish it tommorrow!
I have been listening to this. I at halfway through. The dramatization makes it exciting more like a movie. I like it. I have never listened to a CD audiobook with this many different narrators. Can anyone suggest other books mystery, crime, horror tbat are done in this style please?

Ca..."I haven't listened to it, but Audible has a dramatic adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere originally created and presented on BBC radio. The book itself is excellent, and the dramatization has a great voice cast.
I am curious to hear how people who haven't read the graphic novels are enjoying/understanding it. I'm not far in, and I'm following it fine, but I could see how I might be a little more lost if I didn't already know the story. I do think the presentation is excellent so far, though!
Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book also has a full cast production which I enjoyed quite a lot. It's a YA story though, so I'm not sure if you're into that, Angela.
I love this series so much! I've read five of the graphic novels (starting number six tonight), but I haven't listened to the audible version yet. I'm downloading it now. So excited to check it out! Oh! And this will be my first audiobook, so that should be interesting. :)
Sometimes it's hard to know what's happening to them when they are just grunting but I like it so far.

Robert wrote: "I am curious to hear how people who haven't read the graphic novels are enjoying/understanding it."I will let you know. It's bound to be different than the graphic novel, so I am hopful that the "radio play" format will provide an alternative, but awesome, experience. I am hoping that any difficulty in following is a function of knowing how the graphic novel is presented and comparing the audio to that. But of course, it is hard not to wonder about a possible disconnect -- I still can't imagine two different media. Anyway, here's to hoping it works out, besides Char needs to keep her novels in fine condition.
I'm at 14% and really enjoying it. I'm reading the graphic novels again at the same time. I think it'll help me keep things straight as the story does tend to jump around a lot anyway.
Leah wrote: "Anyway, here's to hoping it works out, besides Char needs to keep her novels in fine condition. .."Haha! I only say that because I was lucky enough to meet Joe Hill a month or two back and he autographed my hardback. Otherwise, I'm not one to be too picky about the condition of my books. Only the special ones, like this. :)

Robert, maybe I'm mistaken? My hardcover has 6 sections, but it's not that big? Is the series longer than that? Maybe I don't have them all in the hard cover? ??
I'm still new to graphic novels, but I find the way they're cataloged hard to decipher. My hardcover of Wraith, for instance, includes that whole series, but it has the cover of the 1st graphic novel, which makes things confusing.
Charlene wrote: "Robert, maybe I'm mistaken? My hardcover has 6 sections, but it's not that big? Is the series longer than that? Maybe I don't have them all in the hard cover? ??"What's the name of the book? It's hard to say, because the 6 sections could be the 6 individual issues that each "volume" is made up of. So there are 6 volumes, each containing 6 issues. Yes, it is very confusing. :-) Looking on Amazon, I see a slipcased set, and I see a newer hardback that contains the first 2 volumes in one book, but not a single hardback of the full series. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist, but it would be close to 1000 pages, I imagine.
I've started to become a fan of digital comics. It's one way to keep my books in better shape, and also to buy more comics that don't take up any shelf space. When I re-read Locke & Key this summer I did the whole thing in digital, after catching a sale on them. It does pretty much require a 10" color tablet or a laptop, though, IMO. Otherwise it'd just be too small to read.
Ok, then. Thank you! What I have is the first volume which contains 6 issues. I didn't realize there were 6 volumes total! Now I see why you're saying it must be huge. So, this audiobook is all of the 6 volumes, I guess?

Yes, the audio drama covers the full series. I'm already into "Head Games" in the audio, which is volume 2 of the the graphic novels, I believe. And a very freaky story arc! I am definitely enjoying the audio presentation!
You're moving right along! I am enjoying it also, though I just started this morning. I still can't get over the fact that it was free. :)
As someone who hadn't read the graphic novels before diving headfirst into the audio, I admit that it completely confused me. I do intend to read the graphic novels and decided to put the audio aside because I felt as if I were spoiling the entire series for myself. I think this would be a fine companion piece to the graphic novels but not so great for someone unfamiliar with them.
I remember reading that in your review, Bark. I just started "Head Games", (part 2), and so far, I seem to be following okay. This portion seems to be getting involved with some new characters, so we'll see how it goes.
I wonder if Hill used the name Ridgway due to Gary Ridgway?
I got lost when they started opening (view spoiler) and felt like I was missing too much that was left unsaid. The production was pretty amazing and I hope to come back to it once I've read the novels. Yikes, just looked up Ridgway. I'm betting that's no coincidence! I hope you continue to enjoy it Char.

Thanks, Bark! I hope so too. ;)
And yeah, Ridgway is a real prize, isn't he?
Thanks Charlene for the heads up on the Joe Hill "Locke & Key" audiobook. Looking forward to checking it out.
i finished yesterday. I really liked it. the only time I got lost was at the start. sometimes it wasn't too clear what was happening but it didn't bother me enough to stop listening. so after the audiobook there is currently no more graphic novels to keep the story going? I do have some questions, though. (view spoiler)
Robby wrote: "Thanks Charlene for the heads up on the Joe Hill "Locke & Key" audiobook. Looking forward to checking it out."You're quite welcome, Robby. I am glad you were able to get the deal before it ended. :)
I'm at about 35% now. It got a little confusing a short while ago, but I'm back on track now and enjoying it. I can't look at your spoilers yet, Latasha!
yeah, at the start I was confused. it was hard to tell who was who but after a while, I caught on. I saw the trailer. Too bad it couldn't be released
I agree with you, Alexandra - it's sort of annoying when one of the characters is whispering or mumbling, so you turn it up, then suddenly it gets loud again. I understand it's a dramatization, and it's got to be hard to strike a balance between dramatic style and practicality. I have the same problem with TV, actually, but I have tinnitus, which doesn't help. And yeah, Stephen King's cameo was pretty cool. :-) I sort of wish Tatiana Maslany had been given a larger part, as she's an unbelievably talented actress, but it's hard to argue with any of the choices -- all have been quite good.
