The challenge box on the group homepage allows you to track your personal progress. That will become active once the challenge officially starts. Just make sure you enter the correct bookshelf (from the "My Books" section). It will give you percent and whether you're on track.
If anyone has issues with it tomorrow or after official start then definitely come back with specific questions :)

I can't wait for the challenge box to be live! haha

I'll have to look at this today and tomorrow and see how this actually works. Do you see everyone's progress in the challenge box, or just your own?
It's only your own personal progress. The box will look slightly different once the challenge starts. I can post directions for filling out the info tomorrow (EST) :)
To complete, with it you can see the progresses/books of all the members who added their shelves to the challenge box, if you click on "★ 2016 ATY READING CHALLENGE ★", but if you don't click, you'll just see your own progress bar :)
I finally finished this years challenge and am now trying to put books on hold at the library for next year. I really noticing the work the mods are putting in to sorting. I think the changes for this years challenge are are great and could lead to more discussions. Thank you Mods for all you have done so far and all your hard work to come!
Hi! I have a couple of books that I haven't finished reading from 2015. Do they count for 2016 or should they be new starts? Or is it totally up to each person? Looking forward to this - thanks! :)
Nicki > you can use your currently-reading books in the challenge :)Laura > it's fine, young padawan :p
Samantha > the group is fun, so it's a pleasure to work on it ;)
I agree with Zaz. There's an awesome energy to our group. There are so many great, diverse readers here. My fellow mods are fantastic. It never feels like a chore, really. But thanks for the appreciation, Samantha.
Directions for filling out the challenge box:
- Enter the number of books you want to read for the challenge
- Create a bookshelf in the 'My Books' section by clicking on 'add shelf' on the left (for example, 'around the year 2015)
- Copy the shelf name after you create it (with dashes)
- Paste the shelf name in the challenge box
- Click 'save'

Haha!!! The magic box appeared and besides me, 35 other members have added their shelves. I checked a few times last night after midnight but it was up until tis morning! Happy New Year everyone!
I just want to add that it is only the shelf name, not its URL, like yours truly, the overly creative thinker was assuming.
Yes! I was going to do the same but then looked on this thread for instructions. The shelf name that has the dashes! But once I pasted it, it looked more like the url because it wasn't just what I had copied.
What if you don't finish your first book doing the first week, can you just keep reading it until you do.
Nothing happens if you don't finish your book at the end of the week, neither if you start one several days before/after the beginning of a new week. It's up to you to manage your reading pace, the group is just here to help everyone stays on tracks.
I don't know if anybody has asked this earlier, but in the thread with Announcements it says about the A-Z folders: "as a gentle reminder, please post only your books for the month we're currently in".So you don't want us to add a book if it's for let's say week 43?
No, you can post the book when you read it. If you read a book for week 30 during January then you can create the topic. We just don't want people to post topics for books that they're reading in May, for example.

question - somewhere, idk where now, I saw something about a book-of-the-month that this group does too. Can someone comment on/explain that and how it fits in with the challenge? I want to understand it so I can decide if I want to do that too :)ps- thanks Mods! You all are awesome!

Jenna, it doesn't fit in the challenge (except if one of the picked books is in your plan, of course). It's a side-read for those wanting to do a common read with the group. It's totally an option! We'll do suggestions according to the genres we chose and then a poll to decide the winning book. We'll discuss the book during 2 months, so people have time to find it and read it, if they want.

Pam, you just go by the letter the number starts with.Example:
1984 would go under "N" for Nineteen Eighty Four
61 Hours would go under "S" for Sixty One Hours
Say a character, midway or late in a novel, is revealed to have had an abortion, or commits arson, or takes his/her own life? Would a list of topics addressed in that book, including "abortion," "suicide," and/or "arson" be considered spoilers that should be hidden?
41. A book about a major world event (fiction or non-fiction)Does this have to be an actual world event or would a fictional world event do just as well? I'm considering reading Timequake but that is clearly pure fiction.
Katie > each time a major plot event or a twist happen, spoilers tags should be used if you want to post them (see "some html is ok" above the comment box).Adam > you can use an event in a fictional world :)
To me, a spoiler is really any part of the story that is not in the synopsis or in the first chapter.
In a past challenge I did, someone made a really cute pdf file with all the categories and then columns where we could fill in what we are reading, author, date started and date ended. It was printable which was nice to have. Anyone have the talent to do this?
Hi...I was curious when doing the challenge, if a book was started on say Dec 29/15 but you didn't finish it until Jan 3/16, can this not be counted in a challenge; based on the fact that it was started before Jan 1st/16? Sorry if this question seems dumb or its already been clarified or previously asked...I'm a newb!
Secondly, is it frowned upon to read books that have been previously read in your lifetime, a reread I suppose?
Of course I had a few more questions and am drawing a blank!
Thanks for your time?
Hi Amy. First, this group is very friendly and nobody would frown upon you for anything. Then, it's up to you to adapt the challenge for your needs. Some people are strict, but other count books started in 2015. As for re-reads, it's again up to you, the point is to have fun and if you want to re-read a book you loved, go ahead!
Thanks so much, Sophie! I hope to accomplish (an astonishing, for me, 52 books as you did) my first challenge. Thanks for the encouraging words from you and Laura. I am unsure if you would have seen my post to you both! Happy reading! :)
I'm a big re-reader, Amy and I counted re-reads towards my challenge last year. You're safe there. You're pretty much safe to interpret the challenge however you want which is, of course, one of the best things about this challenge. As Sophie said, some people are very strict about it and some are not. It's entirely up to you how strict you want to be. Most of all, we just want you to have fun!
For 'a book you've seen the movie of' - does a TV series count too? I don't watch many movies but I've seen quite a few TV series that are made from a book or books.
Zaz wrote: "Normally no, but you have one Wild Card if you want to change a category ;)"I think I'll need that for something else so I'll go searching! There must be a movie I've seen from a book I haven't read but want to read :) Thanks
Nicki, or if there is a book you want to read that has a movie adaptation you could always watch the movie then read the book.
Brianna wrote: "To me, a spoiler is really any part of the story that is not in the synopsis or in the first chapter."I agree. I might say something general like "I really liked the plot and the character development" without the tags.
Emm wrote: "Nicki, or if there is a book you want to read that has a movie adaptation you could always watch the movie then read the book."Very true! But I was talking with my brother yesterday and he's reading The Lightning Thief with his kids and said it was really good. And I've seen that - serendipity :)
Technologically challenged over here...I'm trying to add a shelf to my challenge box and it's saying not entered. I copy and pasted the shelf where I have my "Around the Year in 52 Books" books. What am I doing wrong?

I hope the questions are not too silly and obvious but before I spend anymore time searching the site I thought I'd ask. Thanks!
