Looking for the name of a book

Ignore the title, It wouldn't let me post w/o one (also, a really great book though). I was hoping for some help, I can't remember the name of a book I read a long time ago. It was the 1st book in the series and I never kept going. I don't remember a lot of specifics. One of the main things I remember is that the one of the elements of "magic" is that someone can find 3 books and basically become magical. However, along the way, they also discover an older magic that doesn't require those books. Ring any bells for anyone?

Well I looked for some books with your keywords but I couldn't turn anything up. :( if you could remember anything else about it, even a small detail, I would continue to help you look.

Here ya go buddy. It's the Outstretched Shadow by Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory. I knew exactly what you were talking about but could not think of the author or title either. Drove me nuts so I scrolled through pages of books until suddenly I recalled the author and voila. I have not read this but there are actually two trilogies set in this world.
