Ryan (kingarthur) | 17 comments I tried to combine these two, but it wasn't working for some reason:

Thanks so much for the help guys! You pretty much rock!

Philip (burnnerman) | 5912 comments Done. Only a librarian or the author of the book can combine editions.

Ryan (kingarthur) | 17 comments Thanks! I see they're combined now.

Question?

We published this book by a self published author, changing parts of the book with the author. So this version is https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8... is the self-published one. Is that still considered an "edition" of the two books combined above?

Thanks!

Philip (burnnerman) | 5912 comments Yes it would be an edition, since they are the same book, just a revised edition.

Ryan (kingarthur) | 17 comments Gotcha! Makes sense.

I also noticed that when a search is done the edition that appears is the outdated one. When I looked at the all editions page (https://www.goodreads.com/work/editio...) it shows the old one first.

I'm assuming that the first book on that page gets priority in search. Is there a way to put a new edition up top or is it automatically put there by pub date or something like that?

Thanks again Phillip!

Ryan (kingarthur) | 17 comments It looks like having it first there also gives it priority in the series list: https://www.goodreads.com/series/1574...

I see on the "all editions" page that there's a "1st" next to the old, self-published edition. Perhaps that could be given to another title? The Kindle or Hardcover?

Ryan (kingarthur) | 17 comments Essentially looking for it show up like it does for Sherlock Academy #1: https://www.goodreads.com/work/editio...

Thanks for being patient with a newbie!

The default is the one shelved by the most users, unless the author has set it otherwise. Only the author (and Goodreads staff) has that ability. Here's how: http://www.goodreads.com/help/show/31...

Ryan (kingarthur) | 17 comments rivka, great! Thanks!

A few followup questions:

How does the author delete an edition of the book?
If it is deleted do the reviews, shelves, etc transfer over to the other editions?

Philip (burnnerman) | 5912 comments An Author cannot delete an edition of a book. If it is a duplicated edition then you can post to the deletion/merge thread, and a super will take care of it.

Other than that all editions are kept on GR even if they are no-longer available, because people want to shelve the edition that they read.

Ryan (kingarthur) | 17 comments Great Phillip. That makes lots of sense. Do you know if the shelves that people put a book on affects the list of shelves on other editions of the same book?

Shelves are shown for the work, not edition by edition. Any questions about how that works should be directed to Support via the Contact Us link on the Help page. It is not something librarians can help with.

Ryan (kingarthur) | 17 comments Awesome. Thank you rivka. That's just what I needed to know.
