Zaz | 2969 comments Hello!

I successfully finished my 2015 Reading Challenge and I read tones of side-reads. I'll probably be more busy this year, so I'll slow down and read less. One of the difficulties was to balance the lengths of the books, so you'll find children books when I could use them (I'm eager to read more of them!). I added many dystopian and fantasy books as I tried to reduce my oversized reading list (thanks to 2015).

I will show only the covers for the books read or currently read. I'll read mostly in order.

2016 AtY RC ~ 52/52 weeks completed. Average: 4.0 stars (average 2015: 4.04 stars).

message 6: by Zaz (last edited Dec 12, 2015 07:49AM) (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments I haven't read Vernes since lots of years but remember enjoying the ones I read (no idea which ones, but it wasn't Around). I'm curious to see if it will work well now.
It will be nice to discuss Oryx if you decide to use it :)

I decided to use the "2016 debut novel-author" for week 39. I just had a look at the books listed on the listopias and some stories look very interesting. I liked some other suggestions but I already chose some weeks with these categories in mind (strong female or different ethnie).

Name of the wind has pretty high ratings, so all of us who have it in our TBR will have to jump this year! It will be nice to read it with the group.

Sophie> I've mixed feelings for the moment because the 3rd will be released at an unknown date and some people say it's slow paced. However, I'm looking forward to the writing and the story, I really enjoy how the author writes on social medias :)
I own the book since several months (it has a beautiful edition, ahem), so I've to read it!

message 7: by Marta (new)

Marta (gezemice) | 859 comments My highest rated is the The Name of the Wind, so I am going to read it :) Also, definitely will read Oryx and Crake. It fits into multiple categories - I discovered Margaret Atwood this year and I want to read more from her; it is a book I wanted to read but did not get to it; and it is the beginning of a new series. Now I will have another reason - we could discuss it! :)

Used to love Verne when I was a kid but I find the English translations not very enjoyable.

Childhood classics are also on my list! Just read Charlotte's Web, it is a great story. The other two are on my list!

message 8: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Great! I'm looking forward to discuss the books and as I haven't read The Handmaid's Tale (I suppose it's the one you read!), it will be interesting to know how it compares with Oryx.

I only read Verne in french as it was before I read in english, so no idea how the translations are, but I always prefer to read in the original language when I can (except for Pratchett, our translator is really good).

I totally want to read all these children classics, they'll probably end as side-reads if I've enough time. So many books, so little time!

message 9: by Marta (new)

Marta (gezemice) | 859 comments Yeah, it was the Handmaid's Tale. Scary but very well written. Would love to see how Oryx and Crake compares. There are 20+ years between...

I am Hungarian so I read Verne in Hungarian when I was a kid, and loved it. Now I live in the States and was reading pretty much only in English for the last 15 years or so. I find that English translations are less sophisticated. In Hungary many translations are done by accomplished authors in their own right. Here it seems to be more thought of as grunt work.

That's also the reason that I do not know a lot of the English classics and children's books, so I am kind of trying to catch up now. I have more time to read than before so this year I am plugging those gaps.

Pratchett's language is the main reason I read it, not sure how that would translate. I do know that translations can sometimes be better than the original, though!

message 10: by Maple (new)

Maple (maplerie) | 1025 comments I love your list! The Book of Lost Things is one of my absolute favorite books! I found it randomly in a dollar store bin, and it is easily one of my best buys. I hope you read and like it :D

message 11: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Thanks Manda, it sounds good :)

I'm a bit annoyed with the GR Choice Awards for the moment as there are few books I'm interested in (last year, books were more appealing). Some are already in my TBR so I'll probably choose them, but it won't really help me discovering new authors (except if write-in appear in the nominated). Nevertheless it will be interesting to see the opinions for this week in the group, maybe I'll find some books I'm finally curious to read.

message 12: by Maple (new)

Maple (maplerie) | 1025 comments I feel the same way about the Choice Awards right now. When I looked at the list I was so disappointed by how many great books from the past year did not make it. On a personal level I'm almost angry that Red Queen was there. It was probably the biggest pile of rubbish I read all year; nothing unoriginal in that book.

message 13: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments I totally understand that people can like/love pretty bad/boring/average books. I just have a problem with all the hype around them, when very good books stay in the shadow. I totally hope there will be very interesting write-in, in enough quantity! We'll know soon at they are just possible in the 1st batch or something like this.

We have a lot of sequels this year, it doesn't help too as I'm not interested in starting a series by book 4 (at the same time, it's with the nomination of the 2nd that I discovered Miss Peregrine’s Home last year...). The current nominated probably lack good covers too, which doesn't work well with me.

message 14: by Maple (new)

Maple (maplerie) | 1025 comments That's always frustrating. I am always hesitant to start another series. I honestly prefer picking them up after the series is complete because then I can better gauge my commitment level to it. A friend got me into the Jim Butcher, Dresden Files series. When he introduced me it was already 12 books in, and still going. I've only made it to book 3, while Butcher has released up to book 15, with 16 and 17 in the works. This could be a life time commitment. Haha At least they're good books so far.

I've got my fingers crossed for quality write ins!

message 15: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I really want to read Holes - I might have to squeeze it in as a side read. I got it for 1 CHF at a book sale a few months ago!

message 16: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Children books are easy to use as side-reads, I usually read them on a weekend :)

I think I'm totally hopeless: I'm finding few books I'm interested in the Choice Awards and I want to read now all the YA fiction books nominated that look good. I'm not sure I'll have something to read for the challenge, apart from Shade of Magic :D

message 17: by L (new)

L | 127 comments Oryx and Crake would have been on my list if I didn't already have a Margaret Attwood but from the reviews I think it ticks all my boxes. Look forward to seeing what you think of it! Great list x

message 18: by Zaz (last edited Nov 07, 2015 02:16PM) (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Thanks Lisa!

I've narrowed several categories and pushed out books I wasn't fully interested in. I've problems to find appealing books for the profession one and the memoir, so I'll probably wild card one of them.

For my 2015 RC, there were few 2015 books, 2016 will be a lot better with 6 new books! I'd like to put also new ones in some of the empty categories. I've several sequels in the plan too, so they'll be read out of order as I don't want to wait too much between 2015 books and their sequels.

message 19: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (mich2689) | 484 comments I hope you enjoy The Name of the Wind. It was one of my favorite books that I read in 2015. At first I was reluctant to read it because it's kind of long, but once I started, I finished it really fast. So good! I'm reading the sequel, The Wise Man's Fear for my highest rated on my TBR topic.

message 20: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Good list, Zaz.

It seems The Name of the Wind is cropping up as the highest rated book on a lot of people's TBR so I can't wait to discuss that! That's my selection for that week also. I'm also planning to read A Darker Shade of Magic.

You had so many great graphic novels on your list last year (between your main reads and side reads) that I'm wondering if more of those will be popping up! I always enjoy seeing your side reads.

message 21: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Thanks Emm :)

A Darker Shade seems really interesting, I'm just a little worried because I was not really convinced by the characterization in her book Vicious and, most of the time, authors are good at this or not. As it's an important point for me, I really need a strong story if the characters lack depth.

I've many YA and children books in my plan and I usually read them in 2-3 days if they are under 400p, so I'll probably have plenty of side-reads again, even if I'm more busy. I hope I'll find graphic novels I enjoy a lot in 2016 (there are some interesting things announced, so I'm looking forward to read them), I'll share my opinion on them too ;)

message 22: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments I narrowed again and moved my mental illness book to the biography week. Not sure what I'll read for the mental illness, I've Virgin Suicide in my TBR and several members here will read it, so it's a possibility, but I'll probably stick there a side-read.

Today is my lucky day as Awoken, my book for week 5 is currently free on Kindle (link) :D

message 23: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Ooh, thanks Zaz - I've just downloaded it.

message 24: by Ella (new)

Ella | 42 comments Me too. I love free books, I have so many of them, but not enough time to read all of them.

message 25: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments I liked the prologue so I hope the full book is good :)

I just finished The Neverending Story, it was an unique experience with a book inside a book so now I'm really looking forward to week 7 as it seems there are similar points between the 2 stories.

message 26: by Aglaea (new)

Aglaea | 369 comments Glad to see side reads mentioned. I just hit 60/60 read for this year's GR challenge and there were many weeks that I read absolutely nothing. Recently I've read several a week, however, which makes me optimistic about the possibility of having side reads of lighter kind also in 2016.

message 27: by Marjorie (new)

Marjorie Hedinger | 1 comments Zaz wrote: "I narrowed again and moved my mental illness book to the biography week. Not sure what I'll read for the mental illness, I've Virgin Suicide in my TBR and several members here will read it, so it's..."

The Bell Jar would be good for the mental illness category.

message 28: by Marta (new)

Marta (gezemice) | 859 comments I am going to read the Bell Jar for the mental illness.

You could also try autism, which is not a mental illness but more of a different mental condition, The Rosie Project was a total hoot, the The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is also very good, and an easy young adult read.

message 29: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Thanks for the suggestions. I heard a lot about The Rosie Project (it's like the 10th time I read the summary) and The Curious seems pretty popular too. For the moment, they don't seem to be enough appealing because they are not in my TBR. The Bell Jar seems to be a true story so I think I'll avoid it regarding the fact it's about depression (always more darker in the reality than in a fiction).

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments The Bell Jar is supposed to be semi-autobiographical. It's really good though, and actually not that dark. It's written really well. I'm reading The Virgin Suicides too, so you can choose that and we can talk about it. :)

Zaz | 2969 comments I updated with some other dystopian possibilities (one of them is a GR recommendation), I'll probably read most of them but so far Orleans is the most appealing.
I decided what to read for the Choice Awards and added my shelf for what I want to side-read next year.

Still undecided for the profession week (I read the beginning of 2 recommended books, they were not appealing enough for the moment). It's not a topic I'm really interested in, maybe I'll switch it or fill it with a side-read where someone actually works (which doesn't happen a lot in my books and I'm not sure being a hero is a job).

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Oooh I forgot that Robin Hobb wrote with another name! I'm definitely adding one of hers to my challenge! I'm just hesitating between Fool's Assassin and The Dragon Keeper.

Around the world in 80 days is the perfect book for this year! We could use it for a monthly read!

Of course being a hero is a profession, but they do crazy hours and don't get paid ;)

I laughed so much at the opening lines from Monster Hunter International, it's in my TBR, but I couldn't add it to the challenge, but now I want to read it!

...And the Stars fell Silent looks so good! Initially, I wanted to read a book with less than 100 reviews, but I forgot this idea while doing my list. I'm adding it to my list anyway ;)

message 33: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments I haven't read Fool's but my friends found it great. Dragon Keeper had some very interesting character development and plenty of dragons, but the main girl was tiresome. As usual with Robin, I think it's better to read in order to avoid spoilers :)

Good, there are plenty of books with heroes. No idea what to choose now :p

Yes, Monster Hunter has a "nice" intro! I haven't read a book from this author so I don't know what to expect. I'll probably try the sample before deciding (Legion is by Sanderson, so it's a safe choice).

I'll let you know what I think of The Stars! This one won't change :)

message 34: by Sinéad (new)

Sinéad O'Brien (sinead89) OH, I'm so jealous you're on your first reading of Oryx and Crake! It's my absolute favourite dystopian series, by one of my favourite authors!

message 35: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments I hope I'll enjoy Atwood's writing and stories Sinéad :)

My brain connected yesterday, which is funny because I have a book in my TBR about an author, and the book is "Brain: The Man Who Wrote the Book That Changed the World". So I've my profession (and it's short and well rated, yey).

I'm currently reading my 2nd Ness' book and, really, I'm in love with this author, so I changed my 2015 author for one of his books :)

I decided to do mini-challenges to order a little my 2016 TBR. I'll try to use books I already added or will add and not books specifically for the challenges.

message 36: by Maple (new)

Maple (maplerie) | 1025 comments Oh! What kind of mini-challenges are you planning?

message 37: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments They are at the end of my plan, I added some of the books I'm already planning to read for each mini! It will be a good motivation to read some well known books I'm a little reluctant to read (I've to put Cinder somewhere in the plan or minis, if not I'll never start it) and to keep in mind recent releases :)

Laarni (laarnireads) | 12 comments I'm so happy you chose Battle Royale for Week 50! I love that book! I hope you'll like it :)

message 40: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments I saw the movie several times and it's a survival/dystopia, so I'm pretty sure it will be entertaining enough :)

I liked the movie too! Did you the sequel?

message 42: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments No idea, I probably saw it but, if it's the case, I absolutely don't remember it.

message 43: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Narrowed again the choices, doubled some weeks and I've now a pretty "other challenges" post. I succumbed to the A to Z...

The more I work on my plan and challenges, the more it looks crazy. In 2016, I'll be Mad Hat Zaz, it seems appropriate. Good luck to me with all the series, my brain will probably explose or something like this!

message 44: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments The Name of the Wind is my top rated TBR too. I'm totally intimidated by its length, but encouraged that so many of you have it listed too.

message 45: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Yes, it's a very big one, but Rothfuss is a skilled writer so, hopefully, it will be a smooth read! I don't plan to finish it in just a week, I'll probably spend 3 weeks reading it.

message 46: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 7 comments THANK YOU! I was having the biggest brain freeze about 'An Author who writes under 2 or more names' but Robin Hobb is one of my favourite authors and I haven't read her new series yet.

message 47: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments You're welcome! I haven't read Fitz&Fool yet, because it's not finished, but I'll probably start it in 2016. I'm curious to read what she published under Megan, I hope it will be interesting :)

Zaz | 2969 comments 1. A book you meant to read in 2015, but didn't:
Cinder ★★★★★

A very pleasant (and quick) read, with likable characters (not perfect), an interesting storyline and a nice dystopian world. I really liked Cinder and Kai and their relationship and enjoyed the supportive cast and the villains. A very nice retelling, which used some interesting parts and added plenty of new things that kept me interested. I'll continue the series this year.

Others:
Short stories:
4★ Points of Origin, a nice sci-fi short on Mars, about adoption. Not amazing, but it was pleasant and interesting.
4★ Harrison Bergeron, a dystopian short, which reminded me Fahrenheit 451 with the creepy society and characters.

-----------------------------
Side-reads from the end of December (as I didn't update my 2015 plan with them)

Books
4★ White Trash Zombie Gone Wild, the 5th in the series. Not fond of this story but it was pleasant as usual. I was a bit disappointed that I didn't learn more about the zombie thing, as we had some hints in the previous book.
3.5★ Champion, the 3rd in the series. Glad I finished the series and overall disappointed as the 1st book was better than the sequels. The author has potential, but there was a lot of useless stuff and the characters lacked consistency as I didn't like the same in each book.
4★ Little Women, I read the cut (old) edition and I'll try to read the uncut for the A-Z challenge. Pleasant read, I enjoyed the story and Jo :)
4★ The Fifth Season had a very interesting world building and a very interesting way to tell the story. Not all the characters worked for me and the pace was too slow for my tastes, but I'd like to continue the series at some point (probably 2017).

Short stories
5★ Brimstone and Marmalade, or a retelling of "I don't want a demon, I want a poney". Great read, the demon was awesome and I'm very sad it's the only work from this author.
3★ Cinnamon, my first short by Gaiman. Nice but nothing more.
5★ The Witch of Duva. It reminded me a lot of Uprooted, which is definitely a great thing. I totally liked the atmosphere, the writing and the twists. It's a 0.5 so I'm now looking forward to read the series.
2★ Daughter of Necessity, a boring retelling of Penelope and her thread, from the Odysseus.
5★ Small Offerings, a creepy dystopian short and my 1st try with this well known author. The story was well told and interesting.

Graphic novels
4★Monstress #1, gory and violent but with good art and story.
5★Little Robot, I already forced 2 persons to read it :p I loved this and bought the hardback even if I already bought the expensive ebook. It's the story of a little girl who finds a robot. A new favorite.
4★ Zita the Spacegirl, same author than Little Robot and also a pleasant read, even if the art was not as good and the story less interesting.
3★ Soulless: The Manga, Vol. 3, a disappointing retelling of Blameless. I preferred the previous ones.
4★ Revival, Volume 6, a little better than the 5th and I'd like very much to continue to have answers in the 7th, the series is too long.
3★ Chew, Vol. 10, a messy sequel with few interesting things, but luckily it's the end of the main storyline, so I won't feel obligated to read the 2 next (and last?) arcs.

Picture books
Worst in Show (4★), The Dark (5★), The Pigeon Needs a Bath! (3★), La bulle (4★), Moi devant (5★).

Zaz | 2969 comments 2. A book set in a different continent:
Switch! The Lost Kingdoms of Karibu ★★★.5

I liked to spend some time in Africa and the magic was interesting enough. If the atmosphere was satisfying, the story was a little below and would have probably worked better with younger readers as it's adventure oriented (in the way kids' books are, don't search logical decisions). The bad point was the unidimensional characterization and I found the main character uninteresting. It's more a 3.5 stars, but it's self-published, so I rated 4.

--------
Others:

• Books
3★ Statisticity, a dystopia, lacking interesting characters and very focused on software/hardware which is not my cup of tea.
3★ Raising Steam, only 1 discworld novel left now >_< This one was focused on railway, steam engine and terrorism, I found it mostly boring and too much dark for a discworld novel. Similar to Snuff but more difficult to finish. I hope I'll enjoy the last Tiffany and I've some previous short stories and novella to read in the universe.
5★ The Last Policeman, definitely my fav this week, with its well fleshed and interesting characters, the nice investigation and the pre-apocalytical setting. I'm glad it's a trilogy :)

• Short stories
3★Glitches, Cinder's prequel. I liked to learn more thing about her feelings when she became what she's now and when she met everybody, but it didn't really added something to the series and I'd have probably not been interested if I read it before Cinder.
4★Death and What Comes Next, after Raising Steam, I needed to cheer me up, so I read a short about Death. It was good, funny, short and there were CAPS :D

• Graphic novels
3★Hana-Kimi, Vol. 3, not my favorite in the series because of the abusive content, it's the one I don't like to re-read.
4★Giant Days, Vol. 1, 3 student girls, normal, funny, struggling with every day problems like love stories, feminism or a cold. Refreshing :)

Zaz | 2969 comments 3. A book from the Goodreads Choice Awards 2015 (winner or nominated):
A Darker Shade of Magic ★★★★

I find the story interesting and it was a quick and smooth read. However, the different London could have been more developed and the characters were unidimensional, so my overall impression is not as good as it could be with more depth. There was potential for it with what was happening and the characters' present & past, so I hope it will improve in the 2nd. I'm not in a hurry to read it, so maybe it will be for 2017 as the 1st has a conclusion.
Full review.

Others:

• Books
I continued some of my ongoing books, but will probably finish them only the following week.

• Manga
It was a manga binging week!
5★Orange #1-5. A moving story about depression and friendship. I really liked all the characters, the art was good and it was really moving (I'm an easy crier-laugher with manga).

• Picture books
Yéti, Quand papa était petit y avait des dinosaures, Spork, Song & Juniper.
