ABANDONED. book about a girl who has to find her dad in a desert

I read this book about 3-4 years ago and it was about a girl in a desert town and her dad goes missing in this mysterious part of the desert that nobody dares to trek through and before she goes there's a sheriff who arrests her so that she won't go and then a guy comes looking for her and shoots up the place but she escapes and she goes to this city that's above the desert or something. I think the title has something to do with the moon or stars?

later teens, she's like 16-17
