Avengers Omnibus/OHC Reading List

Each volume listed here should be an oversized hardcover (OHC) or listed as an omnibus (oversized books are usually 11.x inches in height). Some of these OHCs are as thick or thicher than some omnibus editions. Please let me know if you see anything that needs to be corrected, this is probably going to start out as a work in progress. Please note, the early Avengers material is most fully collected in standard size Marvel Masterwork volumes 1 thru 15 (issues 1 thru 149 plus some additional material).

Please Note, Once you get to Bendis New Avengers there are some big summer events that take place that shape what happens in the Avengers books. So to fully understand the ongoing Avengers book you need to know what happens in the main event. I will include these events about where they would need to be read and note them as event OHCs.

Avengers: Earth's Mightest Heroes are modernish re-tellings of the beginning of the Avenger team. It wasn't really well received and can be easily skipped without missing anything.

Avengers The Crossing Omnibus is widely held to be one of the poorer written events.

Avengers/X-Men Onslaught Omnibus is one big event with lots of other characters. It's more focused on the X-Men though the Avengers also star.

My favorite OHC is probably Avengers Forever. Fun time travel tale with Avengers from different time periods collected to form a team.

Avengers Endless Winter isn't meant to fit in anywhere in continuity. It's closer to movie versions of the characters.

Since you mentioned endless winter, you could also mention Remender's Rage of Ultron.

I'm thinking of picking up an Avenger omnibus for my next read. Has anyone read The Avengers by Busik and Perez vol 1? Let me know what you thought of it.

I read it when it originally came out and I was underwhelmed. It's not terrible by any means, just doesn't really have that "epic" feel to it. Busiek is a good writer and Perez is an outstanding artist. I seem to recall an Ultron story in there that stands out but the rest was average. My two cents...

My top recommendations for Avengers would be:

Kree Skrull War
Avengers Forever
The entire Bendis New Avengers run
Hickman's New Avengers run (OHC 2 coming out in a couple weeks)

It seems another case like the War of Kings Omnibuses.... all 3 together "killed" the GotG Omni. In this case, with a second Vol of the Omni, it will kill the Infinity Omnibus (as for the Infinity Companion Omni, i don't think so...)
