I agree with you! Congrats to us!

But of course, also: congrats One Tile Ahead!

Thanks, Jmom, for this wonderful toppler!

In the Middle East, right? So, yes, I had heard about it, but I have to say I hardly know anything about your country...

I started reading in 2 books, before I found one I was in the mood for! So a whole day wasted... Sometimes that happens. I still managed to read 3 books (in a former toppler I even managed 5, so this isn't very much for me). But I had fun and, thanks to my teammates, we still came in second!

I heard of it, CFDeeDee, but I don't really know much about it. But I know how you feel. It's the same for me when I say I'm from Uruguay. :)

message 55: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee @Elsbeth Mostly people would recognize Dubai as "middle east" ..

@Sandra I've heard about Uruguay before .. Never been there though !

I know where Uruguay is, too. But, like CFDeeDee, I hardly know anything about it.
Well, how many of you know where the Netherlands is?
Maybe we could set up a threat in which everyone tells everyone else something about where they live?

message 57: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments Well, I know I've heard of Bahrain, but I can't say more than that. I feel like it's name checked in a Bowie song, somewhere, but I can't remember which song it is.

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I think I remember something about John Kerry visiting Bahrain. I know it's an Arabic country near Saudi Arabia and is mostly Muslim. Is there still a lot of civil unrest?

All I really know about Uruguay is that it's a small country in South America.

I always get the location of the Netherlands wrong. Is it also known as Holland, or is that name gone? I know it's Dutch, which always makes me think of tulips, windmills and the wooden shoes (I have relatives that were there many years ago and brought them home). I know of Amsterdam because of references to drugs and The Hague because of the ICC.

I am very lacking in cultural knowledge of these countries, and so many more. And I know I have many misconceptions about them.

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1797 comments I know a tiny bit about Bahrain. The flag is red and white looks like the flag of Qatar.
It's in the Persian Gulf and has some great architecture. I think there is a two tower triangular skyscraper I really like that is from here.
And I think it's an Islamic country.
For the life of me I can't remember the name of the capital though.

Now I'm off to Google it and see if I'm right. :)

Not bad, Jmom! :)
Yes, the Netherlands is also known as Holland. But that really isn't right: Holland is just 2 provinces of the Netherlands: North and South - Den Haag (the Dutch name for The Hague; also the place where our government is) is in South Holland and Amsterdam, our capital, is in North Holland. I live in Nijmegen (famous for the 4 Days Marches in July, when thousands of people from around the globe come here to walk 30, 40 or 50 kilometers a day for 4 days in a row), which is the largest city of the province Gelderland (also the largest province of the Netherlands - and of course the most beautiful ;)...!). Although I have to say the province Limburg, where Peggy lives, is really beautiful as well (I love going there on holidays)!
(so don't ever say I live in Holland!!!) ;)
And yes, there are windmills across the country (usually the old fashioned ones, but also some modern ones - although our neighbor Germany has more of those). We all love tulips (but most of us don't have them in our garden - we just buy a bunch at the local flower shop). We are very proud of our Wooden shoes (we call them 'klompen'), but no one really wears them. Well that is to say: my parents have a neighbor, who has a small farmhouse, and hardly goes anywhere else - he still wears klompen... The rest of us just uses them for decoration. Even most farmers prefer boots.

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1797 comments The Netherlands makes me think of channels, marijuana and the colour orange.

It's definitely pretty high on the list of places I want to go.

Is the Netherlands one of those countries that still has a Royal family??

I think you mean the skyscraper in the city of Dubai, which is in the United Arab Emirates.

message 63: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1797 comments The one in Dubai is just a single tower though.

I mean this one: http://pamelagellercom.c.presscdn.com...

Amsterdam and Utrecht have a lot of channels (small ones, inside the city).
I've never seen (let alone used) any marijuana...
Yes, orange is our national colour! It is not in our flag, which is red, white and blue. It originates in the last name of our royal family: Van Oranje Nassau (oranje = orange in Dutch). A few years ago we had a celebration of 200 years kingdom. In that year, our queen Beatrix stepped down and her son became king. So yes, we have a king: king Willem Alexander, married to Maxima, from Argentina. They have 3 daughters: Amalia, Alexia and Ariana. The kind doesn't really rule our country, he has a more of a symbolic function; he represents our country without belonging to a political party (like our prime minister).

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1797 comments I follow a lot of photographers on FB and there are lots of pictures of Dubai and Bahrain.
I hadn't realized that Bahrain was the one doing all the interesting land reclamation projects too, it has a fantastic looking skyline and crazy looking horseshoe shaped (man made) islands.
I'd like to go see it but I'm afraid I might melt into a little puddle on the sidewalk. :)

message 67: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee You're all correct :D
I thought no one would know about it cuz its invisible on the world's map !
Only one thing, Its called Arabic Gulf not Persian.

@Dawn That building is near my house, 5 minutes by car. Its called World Trade Centre i guess. You're so welcome to visit any time, but try winter season which starts late November and ends during Match, you might find the weather acceptable.
Did you watch the last Fast series movie? It was shot in Emirate

@J'smom Saudia is so close to us, you barely feel that it is separated.

The last King of Saudia said "The borders of Riyadh -Saudia's capital- is Manama -Bahrain's capital"

I can point to it reasonably accurately on the globe. In my mind, the Netherlands sets the standard in excellence for egalitarianism and social justice. It gave the world Vincent Van Gough, a personal favorite. It's where Anne Frank and family lived in hiding for several years.

I love clogs! I don't have any wooden ones. I have rubber ones (Crocs - and not even ugly) I slip on to make quick trips outside around our house. I have another pair (Aerosoles) I wear inside in the kitchen. Great for standing up in long stretches.
