K-9 from the first Doctor Who series, Tom Baker as the Doctor...I think Cybermen are cool too, as are the Dlaeks, but they are more like cyborgs

message 4: by Martin (new)

Martin Wilsey | 29 comments Classics: Robbie the Robot from Forbidden Planet, The Robot on Lost in Space, Gort from The day the Earth Stood Still

Modern: Terminators, Sentinels from The Matrix, Chappie, I Robot

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 2369 comments Good choices so far. I'll add:

Hector from "Saturn 3" (1980) with Kirk Douglas, Farah Fawcett, & Harvey Keitel was pretty awesome.

Huey, Dewey, & Louie from "Silent Running" (1970) starring Bruce Dern. They're the fathers of R2D2.

Movie: Iron Giant ("Superman")

Book: R. Daneel Olivaw (The Caves of Steel)
The Caves of Steel (Robot, #1) by Isaac Asimov

message 7: by David (new)

David Kelly (davidmkelly) | 7 comments I'd vote for R. Daneel also

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

how about the Sentinals from the X-Men

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes! That was a lot of fun. There was one in the US, but we never got that channel. We loved the British one, though.

Have you seen the new robot fight coming up next year?

Michael | 152 comments How about Tabor from the old 1954 movie. From literature my most memorable robot was The Killer Thing from the book of the same name by Kate Wilhelm.

message 12: by David (new)

David Kelly (davidmkelly) | 7 comments Tobor reminds me of Marvin the Paranoid Android from the Hitchhikers Guide BBC (British) TV show :-)

Jevon Knights (jevonknights) | 75 comments Amelia wrote: "Anyone ever seen the show they used to have over in the UK called Robot Wars? Loved that show!!"

I remember Robot Wars, but I think the one I saw was the US version.

Wished the robots were more like walking tanks though.

message 14: by Jevon (new)

Jevon Knights (jevonknights) | 75 comments Robocop 2 is the coolest in movies. But my all-time coolest is Weltall from Xenogears.

message 15: by Ana (new)

Ana (PTXBubbles) | 3 comments I like the color blue.

I personally have no favorites but occasionally (but rarely) I will quote the robot from Lost in Space "Danger Will Robinson". For some reason I thought that was so cool back in the day. Nowadays, my son just thinks I'm mentally challenged

Oh dear...Best Robot Death Scene of All Time - The Black Hole (1979)

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Still can't believe that was a Disney movie...and, I could have swore there was blood when Maximillian kills (view spoiler). :/

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Why has no one said R2D2? He's completely awesome! C3p0 is an annoying nightmare most of the time, but R2, now who wouldn't want that little buddy around, and with all those handy extendable gadgets?

Admittedly, he isn't scary. But, he rocks.

The Black Hole? You just made my day. That movie blew my mind back in the 70s.

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

Phil, Maximillian made a rather strong impression on my 8 year old self...

r2d2 is cool, but a little too cute to be the coolest.

You wouldn't say that if he saved your butt when you're x-wing was messed up...Or, when your hyperdrive was down...or your shield generators. I could go on. But, since he's not real, I won't.

lol... Well since you put it that way, he is pretty handy to have around.

message 29: by Spectre (new)

Spectre Umbra | 9 comments R. Daneel Olivaw and R.Giskard. now I need to re-read those books.

message 30: by Mike (new)

Mike (mikekeating) | 242 comments Gort and the Terminator were cool, but I wouldn't ever want a functional one in my house. In terms of actually being useful in real life, I think Rosie from the Jetsons tops my list.

message 31: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) The Cylons

message 32: by Phil (new)

Phil J | 329 comments Classic Darth Vader knock off cylons or newfangled nude woman cylons?

message 33: by V.W. (new)

V.W. Singer | 253 comments The robots in "Vengeance Is Mine", a short story by Lester Del Ray.

Humans are wiped out, but a single experimental AI robot on the moon survives and manages to fly back to Earth and develops a galaxy spanning robot civilisation.

Gods and Golems by Lester del Rey Gods and Golems

message 34: by Deeptanshu (new)

Deeptanshu | 121 comments R. Daneel Olivaw from the Foundation series by Issac Asimov.

message 35: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Kuhn (kevinkuhn) | 7 comments Marvin from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, coolest and funniest robot ever. From the books for course - not the movie!

David Murray | 1 comments Martin wrote: "The robots in Ex Machina!"

Totally!
The AI was spectacular in manipulating Caleb!

I've always been a big Data from Next Generation fan, also Bender from Futurama!

I love Marvin too, and I've only seen the movie. If he's even better in the book, I'll have to get it ASAP.

Go get the books (note I said books, PLURAL) right now! You won't regret it!

message 39: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 2369 comments The coolest robot today is Curiosity. My son sent me a couple of links to an interactive panorama of Mars taken by the Curiosity rover & stitched together. It's incredible. I'm looking at another world!!!
