My review is about the book Magnus Chase And The Sword Of Summer by Rick Riordan. The book is an extension of the Percy Jackson series. It was published in October 6th 2015 and is 487 pages long.
The book follows a homeless kid named Magnus Chase who is related to Annabeth from the Percy Jackson. The story begins with Magnus curled up underneath a bench in winter. He stays their thinking about how his life was ruined when his mother died. His thoughts were interrupted by his friend blitz. Blitz is also homeless, but he takes care of Magnus as well as himself. Blitz tells Magnus that his cousin Annabeth and his uncle Fredrick. Magnus follows them to learn why they were looking for him. He learns that his uncle Randolph has asked them to look for him. He decides to steal from Randolph and heads toward his mansion. Oh by the way Randolph is very rich. Once Magnus enters his uncle’s mansion he decides to eat some Christmas dinner turkey. He begins to look around his uncle’s mansion and talks about how he and his mother used to go camp and hike outside. While looking in his uncle’s mansion he finds a room full of Nordic artifacts. He begins to examine a few of them till he looks outside one of the windows in the room. He sees his other homeless friend hearth. Hearth is deaf and dumb so he can only communicate through sign language. Hearth tells Magnus to get out of the house. Before Magnus could reply his uncle appears behind him.
Skipping ahead to about mid-way through the book Magnus is in Blitz’s dwarf home in Svartalf, one of the nine worlds, to acquire a rope to bind Ferris the wolf before he can start ragnarock. In order to get it Blitz must win a building competition or die trying. Blitz is not a regular dwarf he does not like building machines rather he likes to make clothes and accessories. As blitz has a nervous breakdown Magnus and his friends cheer blitz on as well as protect him from sabotage. Again skipping to the end of the book (BIG spoiler alert) one of Magnus’s friend from Valhalla, a half troll named X, turns out to be Odin the all-father in disguise. Odin begins to tell everyone why he was a half troll and why a prophecy told early in the book said what it said (I’m not going to spoil the prophecy) and to me the way the book ended was a big letdown. I would recommend this book to everyone but I would advise the readers to read the Percy Jackson series first to get a better understanding about the concept of the book.
