On November 10 we'll interview author Charles E. Gannon. What should we ask him?

Papaphilly | 181 comments I would like to ask him two related questions and one unrelated question. The two related questions is does he read in genre or not really and if he does, does he ever think "I wish I thought of that" or "I can do better with the idea".

The unrelated question is: How does he approach his writing. I.E. does he sketch his story out or does he find about about it as he writes.

As a matter of fact, I can ask you the exact same questions if you would answer them.

Thanks

Tamahome | 7215 comments What does he think of the "Sad Puppies" who liked his novel Trial By FIre?

Actually he has talked about it some (also on Scalzi's site): http://monsterhunternation.com/2015/1... (He seemed to argue for being civil.)

EDIT:
Hmm, "Requires Hate" retired. https://requireshate.wordpress.com

Aaron Nagy | 379 comments Was he aiming for his Caine series to be written, sound and feel just like a sci-fi story from 50+ years ago? I don't just mean in the way that other Baen books are, I mean like down to the way the characters interact with each other it just feels like the mid 1900s vision of the future.

Is he planning on doing a fantasy series at any point in time?

Did the editor have a comment or multiple about the beginning of your first Caine book being about saving poor innocent creatures from evil corporations might not be the best way to start a Baen book off?

Robert Defendi | 54 comments Ask him if I'm a great moderator or the greatest moderator.

Sorry. Salt Lake Comic Con joke.

message 7: by Shawn (new)

Shawn Carey | 1 comments Are there any differences between writing a novel with Eric Flint and Steve White? Shawn Carey

message 8: by Heinz (new)

Heinz Reinhardt I love the hints of real world knowledge on the Intelligence Community, the Military, and the movers and shakers of the business and industrial/contractor world.
I'd like to know if this is either, a bit at least, of real world, first hand knowledge, or if this is the hallmark of one hell of a keen researcher?
And if it is indeed the latter, what is your own reading list like?

message 9: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Miller | 2 comments Why did you think it was important to write about the Hugos drama? With all the vitriol from both sides, why risk it?

message 10: by Joerg (new)

Joerg Grau | 2 comments Having just started "Raising Caine", I am wondering how much of the overall story arc is already mapped out? Do you have a way to finish up the arc/world quickly, in the unlikely event the publisher doesn't want you to continue? Also, have you considered some novella lengths story set in the world? Like Opal's back story? Alas James S.A. Corey?

message 11: by Joerg (new)

Joerg Grau | 2 comments Did you know Bob Eggleton, who draws the amazing cover art, before the collaboration? How did you meet? And how much collaboration is there on the cover art?

message 12: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Miller | 2 comments I'll be writing like a madman for NaNoWriMo. I'm curious about your approach to starting a new book. Outline? Pantser? Do you edit as you go or do a complete draft first?

message 13: by Wendy (new)

Wendy S. Delmater | 1 comments Why does that evil branch-of-humanity guy like olives so much? Seriously, is this just a plot device or will it have later significance?

message 14: by Andy (new)

Andy | 1 comments I know that you have developed a deep understanding of the economic and political ideologies that drive our world, how does that expertise inform your world-building choices?

Also, is it different for the Caine series than it is for historical fiction projects like your 1632 novels?

Thanks!
-Andy

message 15: by Alistair (new)

Alistair Kimble (alistairkimble) | 1 comments 1. Your aliens are so well-realized, do you have a process you use for developing such detailed and plausible alien races?

2. From your experience as a member of SIGMA (a group of science fiction writers who offer futurism consulting to the United States government), are there ideas from the group you've used in the Caine series, and if you can mention it here, was there an idea or project put forth by you through SIGMA that became reality?

Alistair

message 16: by Liz (new)

Liz Growing up what kind of fiction did you enjoy reading?

What is your opinion on reading in schools? Should teachers focus on literary works and classics or emphasize reading for enjoyment.

message 17: by Samuel (new)

Samuel Lubell | 1 comments How much of the worldbuilding/planning for the whole series was done before you started writing the book and how much more has to be done before each new volume?

How is writing a book in collaboration with another author different from doing it solo? How is writing in someone else's universe different from writing in one you created?

What do you think would happen in a first contact situation if it happened today? What if we were the more advanced species?
