Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Yay! I'll be interested to see what you think! I'm 10% through and actually quite enjoying it. I like her writing style.

message 52: by Libscigrl (new)

Libscigrl | 39 comments For this week I read Gulp Adventures on the Alimentary Canal by Mary Roach by Mary Roach.

What profession does the main character work in?
Many of the "characters", or those that Mary Roach interviews are in the medical profession (a few in the veterinary profession), which interests me greatly.

What do you like about the profession?
I love medicine, so anything medical related interests me. This book got me two ways, though. As someone who aspires (longingly, but not really sensibly) to write someday, Mary Roach is who I would love to emulate. I love her writing style and the way she includes the ways she researches within her writing. I'd love to travel around talking to people, asking the weird questions, as she does....and then writing about it.

Zaz | 2969 comments - What are reading this week? Brain: The Man Who Wrote the Book That Changed the World

- What profession does the main character work in?
As the title says, he's an author.

- What do you like about the profession?
The fact you can create worlds and characters and that people who don't know you can share your feelings for the characters or picture things you created in their own minds. It's magic :)

message 54: by Tawallah (new)

Tawallah | 0 comments What are you reading this week?
The Postman by David Brin

What profession does the main character work in?
This is a post-apoclayptic novel so there is no real work as we need it. Gordon becomes a postman unintentionally and ends up providing hope.

What do you like about this profession?
Well, they do bring my books which can make my day. So they can bring hope with such a seemingly unimportant task. But I am often reminded of how much their job does matter. And I have been somewhat fascinated by how they sort mail, know almost everyone in a neighbourhood.

Attachments by Rainbow Rowell

- What profession does the main character work in?
Information Security Officer

- What do you like about the profession?
I think itd be interesting to see what happens 'behind the scenes' in an IT dept, not sure how realistic this one is though.

message 56: by Sam F (new)

Sam F | 82 comments - What are reading this week? I read The Winter Girl by Matt Marinovich.

- What profession does the main character work in? One of the main characters was a photographer, something I wish I had the talent to do. The other main character was a speech therapist working with children which is a profession that seems very interesting to me.

Kathryn | 259 comments - What are reading this week?
Like a few others, I also read The Martian.

- What profession does the main character work in? Astronaut

- What do you like about the profession?
Working for NASA as an astronaut was always my dream job. Also I'm a math/engineering nerd so I thought that all of the science in this book and movie were so cool!

message 58: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) What did you read?
Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult

What profession does the main character work in?
She is a wildlife biologist, specializing in elephants.

What do you like about the profession?
I think it would be fascinating and rewarding to study intelligent creatures like elephants.

star_fire13 | 197 comments What are reading this week?
15th Affair (Women's Murder Club #15) by James Patterson

What profession does the main character work in?
The main character is a police detective, and her best friends are a medical examiner, a lawyer and a journalist

What do you like about the profession?
I like all of their jobs. A police detective gets to go out and solve mysteries. I'm not too into becoming a medical examiner, but I did once contemplate becoming a forensic anthropologist (this was back in grade 2, long before Bones and other crime dramas became popular]. I also once contemplated becoming a lawyer, because I love talking and arguing and proving that I'm right. I've never particularly wanted to become a journalist, but writing of any kind interests me and I'd love to be an author of anything.

- What profession does the main character work in? Librarian

- What do you like about the profession? Karen, I also like book, keeping things organized and helping people ;)
Those are the reason being a librarian always intrigued me. Plus, I spent countless hours as a child in the tiny library in my small town and that brings fond memories.

The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie. It is the first Poirot book.

What profession does the main character work in?
Poirot is investigating murders.

What do you like about the profession?
I like that the bad guys get caught and put behind bars. Solving the mysteries is about uncovering truths, applying logic, asking questions and digging for answers, and generally being smart and wise, including understanding the human mind.

- What are reading this week?
The Improbability of Love

- What profession does the main character work in?
I read this challenge wrong and picked a book with characters that are in a profession that interests me! So although the main character is a chef which I find boring although this lady does ut in an interesting way, everyone else in this book is in the art world. Dealers, historians, curators, conservators, etc.

- What do you like about the profession?
To be surrounded by art, live art! I'm in the museum world and although I'm a historian, when circumstances have ended me working with art collections, there is something special and wondrous about it.

Anna | 1007 comments - What are reading this week?
If Only They Could Talk by James Herriot.
- What profession does the main character work in?
He's a vet.
- What do you like about the profession?
I wanted to be an ethologist, and study wild animals like antilopes and cheetah and wild dogs. Then the real world interrupted and I became an immunologist instead. But I still love animals, and this book is about them (and interesting humans too).

Yeah, and it's funny, because he doesn't gloss it over, he shows that it's a hard profession, but you get hooked anyway.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I always loved the story of when he was in the service and had to get a tooth removed and told the dentist he took out teeth like that all the time (with a hammer and chisel - ouch!)

message 70: by L (new)

L | 127 comments - What are reading this week?
I will be reading The Racketeer by John Grisham.

- What profession does the main character work in?
All I know at the moment is that the main character is working as a lawyer but that he used to be a US Marine.

- What do you like about the profession?
I'm sure there will be twists and turns, lies and manipulation from the protagonist's career as a lawyer but I also assume that he can kick butt if he used to be a Marine!

- What profession does the main character work in? the main characters were students, but their mothers had interesting works: Peter's mother was a midwife and Josie's mother was a judge.
- What do you like about the profession?
The midwife stands at the beginning of human life and the judge has a power over human life.

Stephanie (cozyuptocrime) | 58 comments What are reading this week?
The Giant's House by Elizabeth McCracken
What profession does the main character work in?
Public librarian. I kind of cheated here, because I already have this job so it's not just a career I'm interested in, but it's my actual career.
What do you like about the profession?
Helping people find what they're looking for. From what I've read so far, the main character of this book is also pretty cynical and jaded which describes most librarians, even though when it all comes down to it we do want to be helpful.

Ironic update: I waited too long to read this book and now I have to bring it back to the library because it has other holds on it. So I'm going with a different book with a leading lady librarian, The Ice Queen by Alice Hoffman.

- What profession does the main character work in?
There's not really a main character, the author narrates findings from marine biologists about squids.

- What do you like about the profession?
I've always been interested in marine life particularly squids, octopuses and cuttlefish, so it was fun to learn more about them.

I never heard about it, but it looks awesome. Restoring books, creating them, it sounds great!

message 81: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (TheSlothReader) For this week, I read The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman. The main character, Tom, runs a lighthouse on an isolated rock in 1920's Australia. Literally all of that sounds awesome to me. A nice little rock away from everyone where he just works, eats, sleeps, and reads. I could never actually do it, but I like to imagine an alternate universe version of myself that could.

oliviasbooks | 100 comments Side note: I am a librarian. I do have my dream profession.

- What are reading this week?
The Return of Hyman Kaplan

- What profession does the main character work in?
The occupation of the main character, Mr. Kaplan, isn't known. But the narrator of the story is Mr. Parkhill, a teacher of Beginner's English at a Preparatory Night School for Adults in New York (1930s)

- What do you like about the profession?
Teaching can be very exhausting, but also rewarding. Before doing a u-turn to become a librarian studied primary and middle school teaching at university. There were a lot of aspects I liked during the extensive internships at several schools. Yet, in the end I am very glad that I had the courage to change tracks after 4 years of courses and a degree.

I am "cheating" all the time. I have a lot of books in my to read and my wish list. And before contemplating any other title I try to squeeze them into the challenge categories. That process in itself is fun, too.
