Stephanie (cozyuptocrime) | 58 comments What are you reading this week?
The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin
Did you use a book from your week 7 book?
Nope; I found this book through the list suggestions, from the listopia for books mentioned in Among Others. I chose it because I rarely read Science Fiction and wanted to try something new.
What do you think about book references in a book?
For someone who loves books, it's an awesome way to learn about books I might not have picked up.

Marta (gezemice) | 859 comments I read The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick. I got it from the list of suggestions. I am trying to read some sci-fi classics and this was one of them.

Book references in other books are fun, it can get me interested in a new book, or I enjoy the references if I had read the book.

message 55: by Susan (last edited Apr 14, 2016 05:59PM) (new)

Susan This week, I am going to read The Twelve Dancing Princesses.

I remember reading the retelling of this in Sexing the Cherry as "The Story of the Twelve Dancing Princesses" and I don't think I have ever read the story she was referencing. I'm not sure if this is what you had in mind for this category, but I think I'll count it.

message 56: by Bec (new)

Bec | 1337 comments - What are you reading this week? Sophie's Choice. I've had this in my to-be-read folder for a few years as I bought it for my kindle. I've had trouble getting into it. So now I need to actually read it!

- Did you use a book from your week 7 book? No - I haven't read that one yet but I'm reading The Help. This book was mentioned in What the Dead Know

- What do you think about book references in a book?
I think they are great, especially if I know of the book! Makes the book I'm reading seem more real.

Veronica (ronireads13) | 816 comments What are you reading this week?
Pilgrim's Progress
- Did you use a book from your week 7 book?
No, this was referenced in Little Women (one of my favorite books) as the game the girls would play as children.
- What do you think about book references in a book?
I enjoy them, as it may give more insight to a character's thoughts or actions in the book. I really enjoy it when I get the reference but when I don't that's okay too because it usually pushes me to want to read that book as well.

message 58: by °~Amy~° (new)

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) - What are you reading this week?

To Kill a Mockingbird

- Did you use a book from your week 7 book?

No, I haven't even done week 7 yet.

- What do you think about book references in a book?

I think they enhance the story by adding depth.

Rebecca | 168 comments - What are you reading this week?
Walden

- Did you use a book from your week 7 book?
I did not, this was in The Perks of Being a Wallflower which I read late last year.

- What do you think about book references in a book?
I love them. The author has obviously thought enough of the book to bring it up, it's just like a recommendation.

Krysta (booksaremyfavthing) | 74 comments What are you reading this week?
Terms of Endearment

Did you use a book from your week 7 book?
No. It was mentioned in my week 39 book. (I'm reading out of order).

What do you think about book references in a book?
I like it, but its adds to my TBR pile, which is bad.

message 61: by Stacey (last edited Apr 27, 2016 08:54AM) (new)

Stacey D. | 1908 comments What are you reading this week? Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

Did you use a book from your week 7 book? Not sure, as I haven't read my week 7 book yet (I'm jumpin' around the list). If it appears in my week 7 book, The Book of Speculation, I'll definitely note it here.

What do you think about book references in a book? I love when I come across book references. If I've read the book, I'm happy to read the comparisons/comments the author makes to it in the context of their book. And if I haven't yet read the book and it sounds good, I jot it down and research it on Goodreads as a possible add for my TBR list.

star_fire13 | 197 comments - What are you reading this week?
I am reading A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L'Engle. It was mentioned in Mary Anne Saves the Day, which I re-read earlier this year.

- Did you use a book from your week 7 book?
Nope. I haven't even done week 7 yet! haha

- What do you think about book references in a book?
I love it. It makes the characters in the book (doing the referencing) seem more realistic and relatable. Plus it's a great way to expand your own tastes and palette

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments What are you reading this week? I read Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie.

Did you use a book from your week 7 book? No. This was really one of the hardest challenge items for me. I couldn't find any list of "books referenced in other books" that really peaked my interest. This one was on a list of books referenced in The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. I haven't read that one yet.

What do you think about book references in a book? I don't mind them except for when they're overused (reference after reference) or when the author tries to use a book to highlight something about a character's personality in lieu of actual character development (Bella Swan of Twilight fame springs to mind).

message 64: by Angela (new)

Angela | 389 comments This week I'm reading Maphead: Charting the Wide, Weird World of Geography Wonks, by Ken Jennings.
I haven't read the Week 7 book yet (I'm reading out of order), but it was referenced in my Week 2 book, The Road to Little Dribbling, by Bill Bryson.
I love reference to other books in books that I'm reading as they can be a great source of books to add to my ever-growing To Read list.

Did you use a book from your week 7 book?
I read Inkheart for week 7 and I don't think it mentioned this book in it. I can't remember what book it was mentioned in.

What do you think about book references in a book?
I love looking up the books that get mentioned in other books. It adds to my never ending TBR pile!

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Did you use a book from your week 7 book?
No, I saw this in The View of the Way Down, which was my Week 34 book.

What do you think about book references in a book?
I'm always interested in what other people are reading, even when those people are fictional!

message 69: by Emily (new)

Emily (emilyesears) | 412 comments What are you reading this week?

I read Dubliners, which was mentioned in Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail.

Did you use a book from your week 7 book?

No, I read The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary for week 7 and the bulk of its action takes place before Dubliners' publication date.

What do you think about book references in a book?

I like them for the most part--if I know the book then it makes me smile and if I don't know the book then I go look it up!

message 70: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3266 comments What are you reading this week?
The Great Gatsby

Did you use a book from your week 7 book?
No. For week 7, I read The Book Thief. I interpreted that prompt as a book that told a story about books, not one that mentioned other books. This one was mentioned in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, if I remember correctly.

What do you think about book references in a book?
I don't mind if they actually serve a purpose, but sometimes I find them annoying when they are references to obscure books that are relevant to the plot but without any real explanation. Sometimes, they just assume that you get the reference and I get annoyed when I feel like I'm missing out on the story by not knowing the books they are talking about. For example, I read Among Others last year, and I was really annoyed about all of the references to books. There were so many that I couldn't research them all.

message 71: by Kellie (new)

Kellie | 46 comments - What are you reading this week?
Carry On - mentioned in Fangirl by the same author.

- Did you use a book from your week 7 book?
No, I didn't. It was more about books in general, rather than specific books.

- What do you think about book references in a book?
I think they're great when I've read the referenced book already. That enriches the story for me. When I haven't read the book, I find them somewhat frustrating, and I usually have to at least google the title to find out what the reference means and how it connects to the story.

message 72: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine (pikakejazz) | 140 comments What are you reading this week?
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

Did you use a book from your week 7 book?
Nope! This book has been mentioned in a ton of books that I have read: Matilda and The Goldfinch come to mind...

What do you think about book references in a book?
I don't mind them for the most part; although sometimes the author who drops the reference can come off as a hoity-toity smartypants... :)

message 75: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments I read Middlemarch by George Eliot. It is mentioned in My Life in Middlemarch by Rebecca Mead, which is what I read for the book about books category.

Since I love books, I get really excited when I see references to other books in the books I'm reading, but depending on the way they're referenced, if you haven't read them, it can be confusing because you may feel like you're missing something important.

message 76: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (TheSlothReader) For this week, I'm reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by JK Rowling. I did not read this for my week 7 book as I'm reading this starting in October. I love books that reference other books since it's like a fun little shoutout. I loved the HP references in Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli.

No I didn't find this book from week 7 challenge

Book references in fiction can be intriguing and a vision into the makings of the personality.

message 79: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3837 comments Earlier in the summer I read Waiting for Godot but didn't claim it for this challenge. I'm currently reading The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards, which contains a reference to this play, so I'm claiming it now!

No, I didn't use a book from my week 7 book.

I love book references, especially ones I am familiar with!

message 80: by MJ (last edited Dec 14, 2016 01:27PM) (new)

MJ | 947 comments I am reading
The Castle of Wolfenbach: A German Story by Eliza Parsons this week.

- Did you use a book from your week 7 book?
Nope! I haven't read a book for that category yet

- What do you think about book references in a book?
It think it is interesting. The story behind this particular reference fascinates me, because it is one of Jane Austen's "Horrid Novels" mentioned in Northanger Abbey (spelling?). For a long time, it was thought that she had made these titles up, and that the books didn't actually exist. Then, it was discovered that Austen actually WAS referring to real books! I love obscure references. I'd like to read all the books she referenced in Northanger Abbey, but I don't know if I'll be able to get copies of all of them.

oliviasbooks | 100 comments - What are you reading this week?
The Catcher in the Rye by S. D. Salinger.
I swear I had never heard of it before I started to read American YA although I studied English at uni, but since it's mentioned in almost every goddamn young adult novel composed across the Atlantic it seemed to be the obvious choice.

- Did you use a book from your week 7 book?
No.

- What do you think about book references in a book?
They are interesting to me and often lead me to try out new authors. For instance I remember reading Our Town as a teen because I loved Abby, My Love and several classics because Austen heroines mentioned them in the novels.

Jen from Quebec :0) (muppetbaby99) | 53 comments Haven't read this entire thread, but the subject line caught my eye-- I am reading We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson because it was read by Maddy in the Yoon YA novel, Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon ! Seriously, that is the whole entire reason I downloaded the Jackson story!
