Huh good question! Maybe he was looking for human beings and then vord don't register as one? The question is would have found animals if there were any?

I find it interesting how Butcher contrasts Kitai with Ehren and Gaelle. Kitai quickly agrees to help Tavi while his fellow Cursors-in-training were so reluctant and needed convincing.

Maybe it's because they are more like insects. Also, I think Brutus needs to know what signals Bernard is looking for so they can be recognized as something specific.

ShoSho (shoshost) | 12263 comments This is the weirdest thing I found in this book

Do the girls have to serve the camps with their bodies if they don't marry by age of 20? Are they passed around or they choose one man to "serve"? This is so weird and icky! What happens if the get pregnant?
And the legionnaires are not allowed to marry while serving like Romans!

ShoSho (shoshost) | 12263 comments 1.Tavi- We learn that he is the Princeps and Isana's son, but he has no furies. Why? Gaius knows about Tavi but as long as Tavi is without furies he won't be considered as the heir. He would instantly be challenged by the High Lords, and war would break out. That's exactly what Gaius is trying to avoid.

IMO it's a deliberate act from someone who cares for him. Isana, the princep or even Fade. It's not Gaius he needs Tavi to be ready to replace him.

2.Kitai- So she bonded with Tavi, was it a result of him saving her life?
I think it's because he made a sacrifice for her or simply because he fed her the magic mushroom. I don't know how the marat bond with their animals. It must be the same way

3. Their bond- From what Doroga has said, the Marat take on aspects of their chala. So Doroga has his gargant's strength and build and Walker is smarter than the average gargant. So what will Kitai receive/develop? Has Tavi started receiving Kitai's instincts/intuition? Was that why he found her so easily?
hmm good question, it didn't even occur to me that they could use the bond to develop their skills. I think Tavi has some of Kitai's rage. And it might be the reason he found her.

4.Amara and Bernard- I'll be honest, while I think they're cute, I skimmed most of the battle scenes. They drag on a bit.
they are very cute, I really like them together. I hope butcher doesn't do anything to them. JB is good at it.

5. Isana- I sooooo want to find out what caused her hatred of Gaius.
I think she holds him responsible for Septimus's death

6. Fidelias-what did you think of that last scene with Lady Aquitaine? Gaius knows where he is and what he's doing!
very interesting both the part about the cloak and the first lord and how he felt about Lady A's anger and his shout that saved that soldier.

7. Lady Aquitaine - kicked some serious butt. Seems she's the brains behind Aquitaine's ambitions. Will she keep her promise to Isana? Or will she do so until it is no longer in her best interest?
I think she will keep her word as long as Isana keeps hers. But if there is choice between her own interests and Isana's, she's very likely to forget all about it.

8. Lord Kalare - what an A-hole! No wonder his son id a bully!
Exactly

9. Max - he's awewome!
I love him.

10. Ehren- Tavi wasn't the only one holding back among his friends.
Good for him. He's a good addition to tavis team.

11. Gaelle- She's an assassin! Can't remember what happens to her, so I'm looking forward to finding out.
I thought there was something fishy there in chapter 30 when she didn't readily accepted his word but it didn't occur to me that she could be the assassin.

12. Ambassador Varg- looks like a possible ally for Tavi.
He's too brutal and violent to be a true ally but he'll be on his side as much as his instincts let him.

13. The portrayal of women - The Dresden books have been criticized for the way women are portrayed and Harry's damsel-in-distress weakness. Are you happy with the women in this book? (hide spoiler)]

I really hated the serving camp thing and the part about the necessity to have children for citizens but there are no damsel in distress in this book. All the important women characters are stronger and have more power than men.

I think we'll learn more about that when we learn more about Isana's backstory.

Well, they are just like ancient Romans. The discussion of historical architecture and weapons without Furies sounds like the Aleran's ancestors used Roman techniques. And yes, I think that young unmarried women are expected to support the Legionnaires, but not necessarily for sex with whoever wants it. Also, I think having children is considered a good thing.

I agree that it is disturbing, though at least it sounds like there are a lot of women who fall in love and get married this way. And the women aren't looked down on for (possibly) having been sexually active with (and unknown number of) Legionnaires.

Lara | 2335 comments 1.Tavi- We learn that he is the Princeps and Isana's son, but he has no furies. Why? I agree that there is some outside influence that affected Tavi and stunted his development. And he would definitely be a target if anyone knew who he was. Though, it appears that at least Sir Miles has figured it out.

2.Kitai- So she bonded with Tavi, was it a result of him saving her life? I think she has to find a creature to give her heart to, and when Tavi saved her it opened something towards him inside her. It's not clear to me how the Marat bond, but it's not so simple as the other party doing something.

It's very interesting to try to figure out. It's clear that Kitai was already very intelligent and talented. However, while she is daring and confident, she lacks Tavi's ability to think outside the box and take situations from a different angle. We'll have to wait and see how things develop, but I do think there is a psychic bond that was created even though Tavi was unaware of it. And it is possible that his battle rage was influence by her, though it may be his own as he had never been tested in such a manner before.

4.Amara and Bernard- I'll be honest, while I think they're cute, I skimmed most of the battle scenes. They drag on a bit. I didn't mind the battle scenes, they were pretty tense. But, I agree that Amara and Bernard are cute. And I'm glad Amara doesn't regret marrying him. What do you think about her decision to keep things from Gaius? And do you think she really can't conceive?

5. Isana- I sooooo want to find out what caused her hatred of Gaius. It's clearly very personal, not based on broader war decisions. To me it feels like is some specific action that is at the base of everything.

6. Fidelias-what did you think of that last scene with Lady Aquitaine? Gaius knows where he is and what he's doing! Yeah, Gaius is a slick one who is generally way ahead of everyone. And he is cunning so sees through many ruses. Yet, he lets them run for his own strategic reasons. I can see that would make Lady Aquitaine nervous. And I found the growth in Fidelias interesting. He went from burned out traitor to recognizing that he is still deeply loyal to his nation. Therefore, he has finally recognized that he isn't ready to accept unnecessary death and damage when he can do something to prevent it.

7. Lady Aquitaine - kicked some serious butt. Seems she's the brains behind Aquitaine's ambitions. Will she keep her promise to Isana? Or will she do so until it is no longer in her best interest? She is really pretty awesome and ambitious. She's definitely the brains, and has figured out how to work around the restrictions placed on women in Aleran society. As for whether she'll betray Isana, I think she'll keep her word so long as Isana is of use, and if it doesn't do any real harm to her efforts otherwise. However, if she thinks Isana is in the way of her goals, then all contracts will be voided.

8. Lord Kalare - what an A-hole! No wonder his son is a bully! Yes, he's an awful and abusive father. he's also full of his own consequence. I think he sees himself as due the same level of deference as Gaius, and is irritated that he has to wait until others are forced to realize that fact as well. What do you think of his son's substance use? He was really out of control with Max and Tavi.

9. Max - he's awewome! He's so loyal, talented, and true. Despite his womanizing ways. It's clear he had a horrible time as an illegitimate child growing up with a powerful father. I wonder why Gaius specifically wanted him and Tavi to become close? Is it because Gaius knew Max is magically powerful as well as loyal?

10. Ehren- Tavi wasn't the only one holding back among his friends. Well, they are being trained to be spies after all. At least Ehren did what he could to help Tavi when it was needed.

11. Gaelle- She's an assassin! Can't remember what happens to her, so I'm looking forward to finding out. I have some vague memories, but nothing too clear. So, I can't remember either. Maybe this is why Butcher made her such a non-character as one of the group of friends. However, I think the reveal would have been more shocking if we had seen more of her and gotten to really like her.

12. Ambassador Varg- looks like a possible ally for Tavi. Well, I do recall that Varg is in future books. So, we'll get to see more of him and learn more about the Canim. I like his character, and it's clear he respects Tavi's courage and intelligence.

13. The portrayal of women - The Dresden books have been criticized for the way women are portrayed and Harry's damsel-in-distress weakness. Are you happy with the women in this book? This is definitely a patriarchal society (as ancient Rome was). However, as with ancient Rome, women could be powerful in their own right, even if they weren't given legal positions in society. It is interesting that women seem to have very traditional roles, but several times we see them stand up to, challenge, and sometimes win out against men who otherwise seem stronger. I like that aspect of the book. Of course, the Marat provide a clear social commentary in that women are completely equal in their society. Though I wonder what the rest of you think about the fact that Kitai is so ready to wallow in luxury, silks, perfume and jewelry.

On another note, the Vorg are led by queens, like insects. So, there the strongest and smartest is a woman. I'm not sure that's a positive commentary, but they resemble insects in physical form and in societal structure. What do you think about the reveal of how the main queen looks? And where do you thin she went?

#4.It was a romance book I would have said she would concieve. But this is Jim Butcher we're reading so I don't know but I hope so. I think Gauis might have surprised her(and let them be together) if she'd told him.

#6. I don't like fiedlias at moment but with these changes I might change my mind.

#13 I thought her reaction was out of character. she didn't seem like the sort of person who would be impressed by luxury.

The queen is definitly somewhere close planing her next attack.it was creepy that she looked familiar to Amara.
The most curious thing was Vord reaction to Tavi. Why don't they harm him? It must be something he did in the wax forest.
