Merrilee (jrsygrl626) | 189 comments EDIT 1/26/2016: Forget everything I've said. The only thing I truly remember is that a boy gives a girl a gift (something small) and her father sees and makes her throw it away OR the father takes it and throws it away himself.
I also remember that my reaction was like "how rude! It's not like he's proposing or anything!" which makes me think the couple may have been teens/young adults.

Christian romance
Possibly Grace Livingston Hill (There are sooooo many books that she's written!!!!)

I only remember that at one point the mc's aunt/mother/grandmother tells her a story from the older lady was younger. It is something along the lines of "When I was your age I liked this boy and he gave me an orange and my father didn't like him so he threw the orange away."
Sorry for the limited info, but that's all I recall.
Just in case this ISN'T GLH, I'd guess I read this about 15 or so years ago, but I have no idea when it was published.
Thanks for any help you may give!
(P.S.- I'd look through the GLH books I owned, but I accidentally donated most of them to a book drive several years ago...)

SparksofEmber | 957 comments Hmm, doesn't sound like any GLH books I've ever read (though I've only read a dozen or so). I wish you could remember a little more - like who the love interest is or the main story-line.

Have you tried going through the list of GLH books here and reading descriptions to see if anything jumps out at you?

Merrilee (jrsygrl626) | 189 comments I did try that, but its very confusing since she's written so many books. I was planning to go through and see which ones that I remember reading. Off the top of my head I remember The Best Man and Ariel Custer.

It was just a small part of the story. It may not have been GLH. My mom had a subscription to the Love Inspired books at one point, but I went through those and I don't think it is any of them (though I got rid of a few of those too). It has an older feel in my mind, like cars but no cell phones, which is what makes me think of GLH.

Merrilee (jrsygrl626) | 189 comments Cloudy Jewel is a possibility. it was definitely a woman to woman talk. I'll have to see if my library has it.

SparksofEmber | 957 comments I have Cloudy Jewel on Kindle and just did a word search for "Orange" - nothing like that was in there. Hmmm, I should see what other GLH books I have on Kindle and search them!

Merrilee (jrsygrl626) | 189 comments That would work. it may have been an apple though I'm pretty sure it was an orange because I can't have them.

message 7: by SparksofEmber (new)

SparksofEmber | 957 comments Well, I just searched all of the following for Apple & Orange and didn't find anything similar to what we are looking for:
The Witness
A Voice in the Wilderness
Phoebe Dean
The Obsession of Victoria Gracen
The Mystery of Mary
Marcia Schuyler
Lo, Michael
The Girl from Montana
Exit Betty
The Enchanted Barn
Cloudy Jewel

Merrilee (jrsygrl626) | 189 comments thanks guys! I don't know what i'll do if it's not her and the love inspired instead...

Merrilee (jrsygrl626) | 189 comments Wow. Thanks. Still hope this is one of hers.

Merrilee (jrsygrl626) | 189 comments I just had something pop in my head, but I'm not sure if its related. I'm remembering a book where a church caught fire and the wrong person was blamed. Pretty sure that that book is Second Chances (Beatitudes Series #2), but I'll have to see if it's THE book when I get home. Fingers crossed that I still have it!!

Merrilee (jrsygrl626) | 189 comments Crap. No dice. Shucks. Wasted $0.59 for nothing. Lol.

Merrilee (jrsygrl626) | 189 comments Have decided that I'm going to systematically go through my personal library to see if I still have this book after I've finished what I'm currently reading (Library ebook, 21% done). Plus then I can catalog all of my books! Sigh... This is gonna take a while...

message 13: by SparksofEmber (new)

SparksofEmber | 957 comments I wish I could help. I like GLH but haven't read nearly as many as I'd like.

I know you don't remember much but do you know why the aunt/grandmother character was telling the story? Did the main character like someone her father didn't approve of?

Merrilee (jrsygrl626) | 189 comments I think possibly the niece was enamored with a "bad boy".

Merrilee (jrsygrl626) | 189 comments I found this thread again! Forget everything I've said.

Merrilee, I'd suggest updating Message #1 with what you remember now. You could add a comment like "Updated: [today's date]".

Merrilee (jrsygrl626) | 189 comments Thanks Kris. I just did.

Generally, update new information in a new comment box. Many people (like me) skip the first box if we've already read this thread and jump down to see what new info or clues have surfaced. If you really want it in the first box, add it both places.

Merrilee (jrsygrl626) | 189 comments It's in both.

Thanks for clarifying your request in a new comment and at the top (to remove misleading info). Sometimes I read the initial request, quickly scan the rest, and focus on the most recent comments of a long thread.

Merrilee, are you still looking for this or did you find it?

Merrilee (jrsygrl626) | 189 comments I have found a possibility. Was waiting for my copies to come in from the library. Will keep y’all posted.

Merrilee (jrsygrl626) | 189 comments I FOUND IT!!! I was right that it was a Grace Livingston Hill book and that the "returned" gift was an orange. The incident is part of Emily Dillon's back story in Ariel Custer.
