This topic is open for discussion of Murder of Crows by Anne Bishop. Be prepared for SPOILERS.

Synopsis:
After winning the trust of the terra indigene residing in the Lakeside Courtyard, Meg Corbyn has had trouble figuring out what it means to live among them. As a human, Meg should be barely tolerated prey, but her abilities as a cassandra sangue make her something more.

The appearance of two addictive drugs has sparked violence between the humans and the Others, resulting in the murders of both species in nearby cities. So when Meg has a dream about blood and black feathers in the snow, Simon Wolfgard—Lakeside's shape-shifting leader—wonders whether their blood prophet dreamed of a past attack or of a future threat.

As the urge to speak prophecies strikes Meg more frequently, trouble finds its way inside the Courtyard. Now the Others and the handful of humans residing there must work together to stop the man bent on reclaiming their blood prophet—and stop the danger that threatens to destroy them all.

A buddy read just means a group of two or more individuals plan to read the book. Sara and I plan to read this one, but right now we're reading (starting today) Witches of East End (The Beauchamp Family, #1) by Melissa de la Cruz . Plus, we plan to read the first book of the series, Written in Red (The Others, #1) by Anne Bishop first.I was surprised Written in Red was 500 pages. How big is Murder of Crows?

Murder of Crows is only 354 pages. I'm almost finished it, so I guess I'm too far ahead for the buddy read. (Sorry I haven't figured out yet how to make the titles appear as book covers).

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments I am reading this one now...so I would love to chat about it.

Sara | 860 comments I know we're not supposed to start this one until Monday but I loved the Written In Red so much that I have to continue the series.

Thoughts on Chapters 1 - 5

Warning, Spoilers Ahead...

"...I will bite you." - As always, Simon continues to be ever so tender in his romantic pursuit.

"Great. Just what she needed. Yep, that's our liaison. Meg Moosekicker." Well, it's better than Meg the Mouse or Meg - food!

I hope poor Priscilla was able to shoot Wild Dog before the police intervened. He had it coming.

"And then she acts and smells all bunny-weird about me being there in human form." - Love the analogy.

"If you try to quit, I will eat you!" - If you made a drinking game of Simon's threats to eat someone, you would be drunk in no time.

"The boys carried the seeds of that ability but not the ability itself." - We have confirmation that the boys can't forsee the future. I wonder if they are kept at a facility as breeding stock?

"...because these two inedible fluffballs were making him nervous..." - It's hilarious how two human ladies are making the big, bad predators walk on tip-toes.

Simon and Meg are communicating and mis-communicating at the same time.

Sara | 860 comments Thoughts on Chapters 6 - 10

Warning, Spoilers Ahead...

The girls are having a lot of very ominous visions.

I wonder if there are any non-Intuit humans who have psychic abilities and downplayed them to avoid detection.

Phineas Jones has "mesmeric" abilities - do they work on the Others?

I keep thinking that Jerzey should be New Jersey but it's supposed to be on the West Coast.

Sara | 860 comments Thoughts on Chapters 11 - 23

Warning, Spoilers Ahead...

"Lakeside has a human pack now because of her. A whole pack of troublesome, not-edible females." All right, the pack was made up of three females plus Meg, but when they ganged up on him, they felt like a lot more." - Yep, the ladies definitely have the big, bad predators on the run.

"Steve Ferryman was there, of course. He might know things Meg wanted to learn, but he would never be as thorough about cleaning the salt and butter off her hands after movie night." - The true sign of a devoted mate.

Simon's jealousy is very cute.

"Since Meg made an excellent squeaky toy, why wouldn't Ferryman want to chase her when it was so much fun? - If I was Simon, I don't think I would use that as a selling point when he decides to pursue Meg in a romantic manner.

"Human females. They're kind of crazy during this time, aren't they?"
"If you choose to believe the stories written by male writers."
"That many males can't be wrong." - Poor Simon and Vlad have no idea what they're getting into.

"...terror and tragedy struck last night at the Lakeside University when over two hundred students living on or near the campus contracted a mysterious illness." - I'd say Tess made her point. The four deaths are almost guaranteed to be the idiots who assaulted Meredith Lee.

Score one for the chamomile cookies! Also, Skippy is adorable.

"The Grizzly's reminders tended to hurt." - I bet they do.

By cowering on a desk due to a mouse, Meg sure showed the Others that she is "Namid's terrible creation". Not that I blame her, that's usually my first response too.

"...and Charlie was clearly amused, especially when Joe and Jackson returned with their fur encrusted with snow and chunks of ice clinging to their tails." - Winter doesn't like it when you mess with her Meg.

Exploding fluffballs to the rescue!

Sara | 860 comments Thoughts on Chapters 24 - End

Warning, Spoilers Ahead...

The Others freaking out over the notebooks was funny as was Simon wondering if he should have had a notebook all these years.

We find out another name for Tess's kind - Plague Riders - she did take out that university awfully fast.

I'm glad that the Controller got what was coming to him and that the girls were rescued. Hopefully, Jane is able to make a full recovery.

Meg & Simon continue to be adorable together.

I have a feeling we'll end up seeing more of this Nicholas Scratch in the next book.

Lisarenee | 2046 comments *****Comments and thoughts for the whole book Chapters 1 - end******

I devoured this book in one sitting. I couldn't stop.

Interesting that we now know that cassandra sangue are descendants of the Intuits. It makes me wonder how long have the facilities that keep the girls been around? It sounded like the family business had been around at least 4 generations. I believe the Controller said his great grandfather had perhaps been the founder?

Dang this book is darker than the first with the knowledge of how the blood prophets are used and abused. I keep hoping they never did that to Meg, but I imagine they did. The meat grinder was pretty gruesome.

Since the boys aren't blood prophets, I'm curious how they can be distinguished from the rest of the population? Have they been bred to be the most likely candidates to produce more cassandra sangue or were they kidnapped from the intuits? Did the facilities keep track of where the girls were found and kidnap their male relatives?

Jean's revenge was sweet. How awful to find she was to have escaped too and sacrificed herself for Meg when they couldn't do so together.

I'm afraid Monty will end up being blackmailed in the future. His ex-girlfriend's involvement with Nicholas Scratch is worrisome. I too feel this story line will be explored in the next book. Perhaps the Others will help him get his daughter back. I think Monty is better off without his ex. The Humans First and Last organization sounds pretty scary. I wonder who the man was on the train? Could it have been Nicholas Scratch? Or could that man have been someone else. They said he couldn't escape air.

The situation with Heather was interesting and showed how concerned the Others are about their human pack. I like that they consider them a pack. Whether they realize it or not, I think the police whom they've been working with are another pack.

I'm still confused about the ponies. Are they perhaps like Skippy and can only keep one form?

The chamomile makes me wonder if Skippy will be able to shift into human form eventually.

The reaction of the Others to the human shaped cookies made me laugh, though maybe I shouldn't.

What I find interesting is that usually we get the human view of everything, but in this series the author is giving us the flip side of the story. We get to see how the Others view things. I kind of like that.

Phineas Jones was a creepy one. I want to know where his powers stemmed from. Are there more people who can do what he did?

I rather like the way Meg and Simon's relationship is progressing. It's slow, but Simon's got to get over his preconceived notions about humans. It makes me wonder, however, can Others and humans mate? What would their kids be like? It seems that if these two different species have lived side by side someone would have tried to breed the two together.

The smoke in the jar was pretty crazy, but I liked it.

The mouse incident was funny, but I think it proved the point about the cassandra sangue. They are fragile and harmless. Jean, on the other hand, shows us that they do have the potential to be so much more. I'm curious how the Others will deal with the blood prophets and deal with their unique issues. It's interesting that these powerful and terrifying beings are outraged about the way the women were treated and decided that they wouldn't allow any human to take care of them. They've become their protectors and went beyond the institutions to protect them they went seeking them out among the humans. How will this affect their relations with humans? Will it cause more discord among them? Did they spirit any girls away from their homes and families? Will the Humans First and Last group create a protest about it? What about the Lakeland police officers who were seen to be helping them? Will they become targets?

The names for places in the world Ms. Bishop created are distracting because they are so similar to ours but are obviously different. I wish she hadn't used places like Jerzey and Afrika and Brittania which make us want to associate them with places we're familiar to because often times they aren't.

We were finally introduced, albeit very briefly, to the Simple Folk. It seems you were right Sara, they do seem like the Amish. I hope we learn more about them.

message 12: by Sara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sara | 860 comments This book was much darker than the first. The whole meat grinding - and it's hinted that the girls are alive when they go through the grinder - cringe inducing to say the least.

Good questions about the boys. I think it was mentioned that the breeding facilities were liberated too but if the boys weren't rescued this could end up happening again in another generation.

I didn't even connect the man on the train to Nicholas Scratch but I like that theory - otherwise it was kind of random. I also hope that the Others help Monty gain custody of his daughter. At this point, it only seems to be a matter of time before Ruth and Kowalski move onto the Others land so Monty and his daughter wouldn't be out of place - he is the police liaison to the Others after all.

I like the human pack too - especially how they are referred to as "exploding fluffballs". Pretty soon we might end up with a fluffballgard.

It seems like the ponies only have one form - but it seems to have two aspects: farm pony and badass elemental steed.

Skippy gaining human form would be cool. Maybe the "skippy" wolves need something (chamomile cookies) to slow their systems down so their human aspect can develop.

The people cookies were hilarious. Poor Meg had to keep repeating that there was no people flavor in these cookies - maybe they should have made the cookie in the shape of a flower.

I like getting the viewpoint of the Others too - as you said it's something different from the usual pov. I would also recommend Nancy Holzner's Deadtown series for something similar - the supernaturals there are contained in towns and their rights vary from state to state. It's an excellent and underrated series.

I'm curious about Phineas too. The Others didn't seem to sense any "terra indigne" about him. Was he descended from the Inuit too or is he a result of scientific experimentation.

I am loving Meg and Simon's relationship and the tentative approach they are taking to each other. I love the slow development because it makes sense: Simon have to overcome his own preconceived notions about humans and Meg has just escaped a life of imprisonment/isolation - a woman who is only now beginning to decide on basic stuff like the type of music she likes isn't ready for a romantic relationship. Also, Simon is hilarious in his confusion about everything Meg. You would think he would catch on that his threat to "eat you" has worn off now that's proclaimed that several dozen times over the past few weeks.

I'm curious about the human/Other mating questions too. Do different types of Others even date each other or do they stay within their own species?

Yes, for being "wondrous and terrible", he Cassandra sangue are very delicate - especially after their forced isolation and imprisonment. It's a good thing the Other took custody of the girls - otherwise it would only be a matter of time before the girls were imprisoned again.

I also agree with the name confusion - if a reader sees the word "Jerzey" they're going to think "New Jersey" - letting us know later that it's on the West Coast really skews the internal map of the reader.

I love this series but now I have to wait until 2015 until the next installment. Boo!

Lisarenee | 2046 comments You know I was meaning to mention the references to Namid in this book confused me. In the first book it stated Namid created humans and the Others (I'll have to double check the wording) and I assumed it was a god. In this book it almost sounded like a place. Perhaps a name for the world? I'm a little confused. Did you notice that?

message 16: by Sara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sara | 860 comments Yes, I noticed that too. Maybe Namid is both a god and the name of the planet both - similar to old gods like Gaia? There also seem to be multiple gods based on all of the "gods above and below" references.

Yes, I think they mentioned at least one by name. Wasn't there one for law enforcement?

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 823 comments Sorry, lots of questions this time… Don’t feel you have to answer them all; just reply to the ones you want.

Lisa Kay’s Discussion Questions for Hx of the World – Chapter 6

1. We learned in the first book that Crow deaths were a hallmark to a Courtyard where the mysterious “sickness” or drug use occurs (thus, the title of this book). Now Meg has had a dream-vision. I’m thinking, “Thank goodness, another way she won’t have to cut herself… eventually.” Or is this just wishful thinking on my part. Your thoughts.

2. Being human, I completely understand Meg’s concern about Simon sleeping with her when he isn’t a “furry” Wolf. And I understand why Simon remained a human, so as to talk with her about her dream-vision. This definitely adds a new dimension to their relationship, and I like that they are having to continue to discuss and explore it, not just have a Big Misunderstanding – nor just work it out in one discussion. Comments.

3. The names of the humans in Chapter 2 threw me off a little. They despise the Others, yet they take nicknames related? Weird. Comments on their game of Crow Bait & Roadkill? And about what they did to Priscilla – who I’m assuming is human, right? – and how she retaliated? Unfortunately, I believe Wild Dog lives. I wonder what type of Other the teen-age girl was who was shot.

4. How do you feel about Dr. Dominic Lorenzo? What of his feelings towards independent living for the Cassandra sangue? Whatever is decided, I’m sure he won’t be wearing a white coat in the Courtyard clinic.

5. What did you think of Monty and Karl as a template when eating in front of those eight Others that visited A Little Bite? If you travel outside your country, state, territory, or region, are you usually conscious of being a reflection of where you come from?

6. Are Meg’s blackouts just from information overload, or is it something else?

7. BOOK QUOTE:
“The boys carried the seeds of that ability but not the ability itself.” Man-oh-man! The cassandra sangue male offspring are breeding stock! I wondered, briefly, in the first book if Meg had been born in the Compound; now I’m almost sure of it…making a mockery of the whole “benevolent ownership.” But we knew that was BS. Comments.

8. Ick. That Controller! Such an awful human. I’m hoping he gets what is coming to him in this book and not have me wait until the next. Nevertheless, I didn’t expect to see Jean make an appearance in this book. I thought the “other type of freedom” she talked about in the first book was death. Good Gravy Beans! What do you make of the fact that she only kept screaming when the Controller repeatedly asked her about the Wolf at Lakeside, Meg’s Wolf?

9. I had a chuckle over poor Vlad being confronted by Howling Good Read’s human employees, Merri Lee and Heather. What of their sex talk with Meg? Necessary? And what of Vlad having Nyx spy?

10. BOOK QUOTE:
“But if you had done all the things with a female Wolf that you have done with Meg, it would be consider a courtship.” Gosh, I love, love LOVE Henry. What did you think of Simon’s thoughts during and after their discussion?

11. I’ll admit I had to read the garbage day incident in the Courtyard twice. So, let me see if I have this straight: The garbage was bait in order to run over the Crows with a car? That was the weapon of choice? And the only one affect was Jack who isn’t “isn’t flying right”? Will they test him?

12. Oh, dear. Just like you predicted, Lauren, the humans have taken that slogan “Humans First & Last” and made it into a supremacist slogan. This doesn’t bode well – for either side.

13. Another scene we read about second-hand; I’m not sure I’m liking that. Maybe just too many in a row for me. So, it looks like Meg being around someone that could be involved in one of her visions could be a trigger. When Vlad tracked down the hit and run drivers, was he about to have his hand end up in a pickle jar?

14. Whoa. The Others fighting amongst themselves is NOT a good thing. Comments on the depth of Grandfather Erebus’ power and his accepting Simon’s decision. Any comments on Simon wondering why – and actually saying that Meg “went crazy twice in one morning!” (I hope Meg doesn’t hear about that.)

15. BOOK QUOTE:
“I don’t want to cuddle up to Henry. Or Vlad.” LOL! I do think, however, that Simon truly doesn’t realize he’s falling for Meg. You? What rules do you think Meg will come up with to talk to Simon when he is in his Wolf form? Will they start sleeping together again, now that they’re back to being friends? Or have they gone beyond that now?

Lauren (laurenjberman) Will answer in a few minutes.

Just wanted to let you know that I'll be working late tomorrow, so questions will be up Friday morning my time - sorry about that :0(

Lauren (laurenjberman) Lauren's Answers to Lisa Kay’s DQs for Hx of the World – Chapter 6

Yes, Meg's visions seem to be coming without her needing to cut as often. However, it does seem that the really important visions do necessitate it

Comments.

Had to laugh at the goings on over this - the women in the courtyard all rally around Meg and the men are so confused, lol! Poor Simon! He didn't know whether he was coming or going.

I'm also glad that they are discussing the issue and it doesn't develop into this huge misunderstanding. The Others have enough angst in their lives already!

This chapter made me so mad! Obnoxious little pricks who have no idea of what is right and what is wrong! That evil little sh*t was actually planning on taking more of the drug when all the fuss over Priscilla died down. I don't blame Priscilla at all for retaliating, I'm just sorry she didn't manage to blow the schmuck and his cronies away! Can't feel sorry for his parents either - where were they when he was brutalizing Priscilla .. only sorry his sister got in the way.

As to the names - it fudges the boundaries between the Others and the humans. Once again it is the humans who are the real monsters.

4. How do you feel about Dr. Dominic Lorenzo? What of his feelings towards independent living for the Cassandra sangue? Whatever is decided, I’m sure he won’t be wearing a white coat in the Courtyard clinic.

Benevolent ownership my ass! Its just another way for the wealthy humans to take advantage of someone weaker than they. Perhaps if someone took the trouble to help the cassandra sangue cope with their "gift" they wouldn't need to be locked up, but no, then they wouldn't be able to profit from their prophecies - argh!!!

5. What did you think of Monty and Karl as a template when eating in front of those eight Others that visited A Little Bite? If you travel outside your country, state, territory, or region, are you usually conscious of being a reflection of where you come from?

It was an interesting situation. I never thought about how people learn social norms and mannerisms - I guess its true that we mimic those around us.

I've only ever travelled to Europe and the US where the customs are similar to my own.

6. Are Meg’s blackouts just from information overload, or is it something else?

I was thinking something else until Merri Lee explained about the information overload

7. BOOK QUOTE: “The boys carried the seeds of that ability but not the ability itself.” Man-oh-man! The cassandra sangue male offspring are breeding stock! I wondered, briefly, in the first book if Meg had been born in the Compound; now I’m almost sure of it…making a mockery of the whole “benevolent ownership.” But we knew that was BS. Comments.

Yes, it seems that Meg was bred in the compound, which was something I wondered about.

I was thinking about genetics during this section. Being a cassandra sangue is like hemophilia in reverse - the men carry the gene and give it to their daughters.

Agree! The Controller needs to get whats coming to him the sooner, the better. Maybe Tess needs to pay him a little visit...

I was wondering what happened to Jean. This scene was scary - I wonder if her screaming is good or bad for Meg and her wolf? Hopefully good!

9. I had a chuckle over poor Vlad being confronted by Howling Good Read’s human employees, Merri Lee and Heather. What of their sex talk with Meg? Necessary? And what of Vlad having Nyx spy?

Loved these scenes, lol! Yes, the talk was necessary. Meg and Simon just might need a little help in this area as they are both so clueless.

Not sure I approve of Nyx spying but on the other hand, I think that Vlad meant well. He's trying to protect Meg.

10. BOOK QUOTE: “But if you had done all the things with a female Wolf that you have done with Meg, it would be consider a courtship.” Gosh, I love, love LOVE Henry. What did you think of Simon’s thoughts during and after their discussion?

Love Henry and his words of wisdom too - he is like Obi Wan Kenobi, lol!

Thoughts on Simon in #2

Yes, they are testing out the feel good drug. None of the Crows except Jake were injured but many regular crows were killed

12. Oh, dear. Just like you predicted, Lauren, the humans have taken that slogan “Humans First & Last” and made it into supremacist slogan. This doesn’t bode well – for either side.

Yes, this will lead to war and even if the humans manage to incapacitate the shifters and the vampires (and that is a big if), they will still be annihilated by the Elementals and Tess. Stupid arrogance!

I'm not sure what you mean by a second hand scene- I thought the pickles, jar and hand vision was a reference to a story Meg read, and she was worried that Vlad might get trapped like the vampire in the story? - I'm confused

I'm glad that the Others get together to air things out and don't overreact. It would be bad for the Others if they were at each other's throats. Thankfully both Simon and Erebus are good leaders.

Yes, Simon needs to be careful what he says around Meg or she'll kick him in more than the hip!

15. BOOK QUOTE: “I don’t want to cuddle up to Henry.

No idea what she will think of but they do seem to enjoy each other's company and find comfort together so I think they will "cuddle up"

Brenda Walker | 70 comments When Meg kicked Simon out of bed I laughed. Bc it was funny and his reaction too. But poor Meg she doesn't have a clue to her feelings and I don't think Simon understands his either. Both of them are showing such innocence and it is really nice to see this in their characters.

I'm worried about Vlad and what Meg saw in the vision. Glass jar and black smoke. Never would have thought that and Erebus confirmed what Meg saw.

And the controller is an evil man. And he wants to get in contact with this man Nicholas Scratch over Humans First and Last Movement. This will be a lot of trouble. And I do believe a war is coming. Can't imagine what but I don't want any more characters to die. That makes me sad.

Brenda Walker | 70 comments I'm starting ch 7-14 now I hope I can finish by tomorrow! I have lots of other things to do but this book is so good I might have to let dome things slide!!

#10 – I can just see a Grizzly Bear in Obi Wan Kenobi robes. LOL!

#12 – I totally agree with you; how on earth would the humans contain the Elementals.

#13 – Sorry. I mean we didn’t experience it first hand, as it was happening . What occurred after Nyx walked into the the room Meg was in was recapped by the Others at their meeting.
